If I want to study physics at W&M…

do I need to apply directly to the School of Computing, Data Sciences, and Physics when applying to W&M?

I am not totally sure I want to major in Physics and want to explore other majors my first year or two which is one reason I really like W&M, for its liberal arts focus.

Is the Danforth Scholarship committee different from the WashU admissions committee?

I am working on my essay for the Danforth Scholarship. I talked a bit about one of my service projects in both my personal statement and the WashU supplement already.

Will the committee making the decisions for the Danforth Scholarship also read my personal statement and WashU supplement? I am worried that how I describe the service will be repetitive, if they do. Should I write about it differently somehow?

Also, will they see the two letters of rec that go to WashU with my common app, or can I reuse one of those for the Danforth Scholarship app?

A few questions about the Common App

I started filling it out the other day and am not sure about a few things.

  1. Under Current Year Courses, does a Study Hall count as a class or elective? In my school, a study hall is called an an elective but, of course, no credits are earned for the study hall. Do I leave it off my list of courses?

  2. For dual enrollment classes that I will be taking this coming year (senior year) do I include these in the “date from” to “date to”, so like, should I put June 2027 if I am planning to take some this year?

  3. What does the question mean that asks if you have had help by a community based organization for free?

Thanks!

  4. When listing my AP classes/exams, it says I should list exams I am expecting to take. I am assuming this means the ones I expect to take in the spring of 2027. Is this correct?

Thanks!!

What does it take to get the Ampersand Scholarship?

Does anyone know someone who received it? Are they extraordinary in ways beyond their GPA/test scores?

I know WashU is looking for students who will study in multiple disciplines within Arts & Sciences, but are they looking for students who plan to double major across different disciplines or just interested in exploring?

The website says they pay close attention to what you write in the supplement about what you want to study. I am assuming the student needs evidence from their past transcript and activities that they have multiple interests.

What else do you think helps a student’s profile stand out for this scholarship?

How often do Mac students take classes at other schools?

Prospective student here. During our tour, the tour guide mentioned that if there is a class not offered by Mac, you can cross register at a different nearby school. Is this a common thing for students to do? Is it difficult to arrange?

I am asking because I want to take some Italian language classes and Mac doesn’t offer Italian, but I was told that I could cross register at another school. How realistic is this?

Thoughts on Denison College?

For anyone familiar with the school, do you feel like it attracts a decent number of serious students who like to learn?

My family won’t get financial aid at any of the T20 LACs but also can’t swing full pay, so I am having to look into schools that offer decent merit scholarships. I like to look of the Denison campus and the cute small town nearby. The location doesn’t bother me. I like a lot of what I hear about the school from their marketing materials.

After so many years of being in a less than stellar public high school, I am sick of being around slackers and really want to be around students that actually try at their classes and want to learn.

Perspective student here - can you take classes in other colleges within CP?

I will probably pick either Chemistry or Physics as my major, but I also want to minor in a language, and take a few dance and art classes. Is this possible and easy to do at Cal Poly?

Best LACs for physics/research?

I am a rising senior in HS finalizing my college list. I am leaning towards majoring in physics at the moment but am attracted to liberal arts schools where I can explore lots of different subjects first before committing. I don’t want to go anywhere deeply urban or way too isolated/rural (like no further than 2 hours from a major airport).

I am looking for an intellectual but friendly, collaborative culture. I am not a big partier, so prefer an environment where there are other things to do on the weekends. I want to go somewhere where I am challenged academically but also have time to participate in fun clubs and maybe continue in modern dance or orchestra. I am female and have a 4.0 and 1580 (800M)/36, strong ECs that include lots of service, 15 yrs of dance, 6 yrs in orchestra, and a particular focus on sustainability initiatives in my community.

Regarding physics, if I go that route, I would probably continue on to a PhD. I have heard the most important factors for undergrad to getting into grad school for physics is professor relationships and research experience.

What are your opinions or experiences with the following schools as far as their strength in undergrad physics:

Amherst
Haverford
Davidson
Lafayette
St. Olaf
William and Mary (state school with a liberal arts focus)

Also considering WashU and Case Western

(Not interested in Carleton because of the quarter system)

I know Princeton is strong in physics, and otherwise checks all the boxes (I am a legacy x6 family members), but I am worried that the course load would be too overwhelming, and not leave me with time for ECs.

Any female physics majors here?

I am a prospective female student and interested in studying physics. I read an old thread that mentioned a professor named Dr. Katz and how he is not supportive of women in STEM. I then went and read about him on RateMyProfessor which confirmed he is still there and that people say he is awful.

This worries me a lot. I would love to hear some first hand experiences with this professor or if it’s possible to avoid him as a physics student at WashU.

How is the physics department at Emory?

I am a prospective student that will be applying this fall most likely to the Atlanta campus, but maybe would consider the Oxford campus too. I am thinking of majoring in Physics with either a biophysics or astronomy concentrations.

How are the physics classes/professors at Emory? Are the intro classes considered weed-out classes? What about in the upper level classes - are there helpful, supportive professors?

Have you heard good or bad things about the departments of one campus vs. the other?

Percentage of females in sororities at Denison?

I am a prospective student. Does anyone know what the current percentage is?

I am kind of on the fence about Greek life. I am not a big partier but do like the idea of having a close knit group of friends that a sorority might provide. I’d like to have options either way, like I could also have a decent social life without joining if I decide not to rush.

Do school counselors see all their students scores?

I am just curious how it works. Do they have access to see the names of their students and their corresponding scores?

Talk to me about the busy highway I see on the side of campus

I am a prospective student thinking of applying to WashU in the fall. I hope to visit between now and then, but right now I am just looking at pictures of the campus and Google Maps.

I see what looks like a big highway called Forest Pkwy running along the side of campus, right along where there are campus buildings. Are those buildings dorms? If they are dorms, do a bunch of dorm rooms have views down onto this busy highway?

Is the traffic on that road really loud or is the campus insulated enough from the roads that surround it to be peaceful?

Which Claremont college would be the best fit?

I am a Junior exploring which colleges to apply to.

About me: I am female from a rural mountain town in the west. I am social but on the quieter side. Not a huge partier but do like to have fun with my friends. I am more down to earth rather than flashy in a popular Instagram girl type way, but also not nerdy and quirky.

I am looking for a more liberal arts type school that allows me to explore different subjects before committing to a major. I tend to love and thrive in science and math classes, and also want to take a new language and maybe some art classes in college.

I am a dancer and hope to continue dancing in some way, like take a few classes and/or be a part of a student dance company. I also play the violin in my school orchestra and might want to continue that in college as well.

I am thinking Pomona or Scripps? But am just now learning about the different colleges in the consortium so don’t really know the differences other than Harvey Mudd being an intensely science/engineering focussed school.

What are the overall vibes of each school? Which one has the nicest dorms and science facilities?

Thinking of applying to Denison. I am on the fence about Greek life. I am social but not a huge partier and I love my sleep.

I am worried since there are no Greek houses that all the parties are then happening in the dorms and apartments so it might be hard to get good sleep.

Where do the parties happen at Denison?

Is there a lot of partying going on until late at night in the dorms many nights a week?

Where do the sororities/frats meet and do other activities together outside of parties?

I am a junior in HS who is thinking of applying to Emory in the fall.

Just sitting here day-dreaming.

If I get in and am lucky enough to be a scholarship finalist for the Woodruff or Danforth scholarships, what is the scholars weekend like?

Also, what were the dates for the weekend this spring?
