I was an artillery gunner in the US Army. MOS 13-B. I loaded & fired cannons. Specifically, the 155mm self-propelled howitzer. I have not fired a white phosphorous shell.

They're using some kind of VT or superquick mech. fuse, to airburst over the target. Why they're using it on a town is I have no idea. The shells are detonating way too high to make a smokescreen, and illumination isn't needed as it's broad daylight. Neither are they using is to burn down vegetation, as it's exploding over a town. It is clearly not being used to mark a target; There are easier ways to do this, especially as Israel has total command over the air.

Most nations refuse to use it against people. Israel is not in agreement with this.

The effects of white phosphorous on humans is horrific.
