Fields on fire

Just outside of Hitchin, last week. Hare doesn’t look too impressed about it!

Needed a headshot for a book

Hi, I'm a wildlife photographer and I'm doing a book (about birds of prey!) I need a headshot for the bio on the back of the book. I didn't want the usual trope of me wearing camo creeping around the woods so tried to do something simple. Just natural light, but in my (mostly white) kitchen so lots of reflections. Too 'LinkedIn'?

Taken with my sony 70-200 f4II -> f/4 | 1/60s | ISO 100 | 70mm

Boss, I'm tired

This year is the first time seeing Yellow Wagtails on the local patch. I first saw them a few months ago, but only flying around or actively hunting. Yesterday I saw what I presume was a juvenile, it looked more like a grey than yellow wagtail. Either way, it was calling constantly from the top of a tree. Not far in front of the tree was this tired parent. It was there a good while, and did a few different poses. This, slightly whistful one seemed to capure the vibe best. It's been a long hot summer, we are all pretty tired now!

Baby Beaver (kit)

Brand new baby beaver take its first few trips out of the lodge. It was incredibly trusting of me as juvenile animals often are. I was in a pop-up hide, and it seemed to know *something* was up - sniffing the air a lot with its mouth kinda open, but didnt stop it from wandering closer and closer.

Pretty incredible what the family have managed to do in just a couple of years in terms of building dams and coppicing trees etc.

Take on private land at a secret location in Norfolk. Full set of photos here: https://dombarker.co.uk/galleries/baby-beavers

Barn Owl, Hitchin

Both of my local Barn Owl pair are out every evening now. I know they are feeding chicks as I can see them bringing voles back to the nest site - in a working farm barn. They come and go every 30-40 minutes with more food so they have their work cut out for them. There's probably 4-6 chicks.

Fun Fact - UK barn owns are a different sub-species to others. Our combination of high latitude and warm climate (for the latitude) makes for short nights and large numbers of voles. The Owls have adapted by coming out early in the evening and are paler in colour.

Hare in maize

Here in Hitchin, Herfordshire, most of the fields are wheat / oil seed. There's a few fields that are maize though, and these were drilled later than the rest.

Seems to mean that the Hares are visible again. Usually this time of year they are deep in the tall wheat and you never see them.
