France are through, but that was not a clean fun 1-0.

Paraguay dragged the whole game into a fight. Heat, contact, stoppages, bodies everywhere, and France never really got to make it look pretty.

Then the VAR penalty lands and basically decides everything. In real time it didn’t look obvious to everyone. After the replay, you can see why the ref gave it. Paraguay fans will still hate it, obviously.

Mbappe scores, France move on, and he’s now up to 19 World Cup goals, which is ridiculous.

But this felt more like a survival game than a statement. France got through the mess. Paraguay go home feeling like the game was right there until one review changed it.

I get why people hate these super tight VAR calls. Football feels brutal when a goal disappears because of one shoulder, one touch, or one line.

But the one thing I will say: the visuals have made the arguments a lot shorter. When the offside line or replay graphic is clean, you can still be annoyed, but at least you know what the decision is based on.

That matters in knockout games. Nobody wants a season-ending call explained by one blurry angle and a shrug.
