Brain still stuck in bodybuilding mode.

Just joined a CrossFit gym for the first time after almost a 2 year hiatus from training. Previously I trained “traditional” bodybuilding routines for years, so I’ve got experience with those types of lifts and that pace of working out — you can easily stop between sets, track your weight and reps, then try to improve slightly week on week or take time to learn form etc.

What I’m really struggling with in these CrossFit sessions is learning the new lifts. It all feels too fast paced and I find myself trying to get through the list instead of focusing on the movements and form. I end up flustered and overwhelmed during a session, and it all becomes a blur by the end then losing track of everything I did the week before.

I should also say I don’t really have time to go to open gym and just drill the movements. I work full time and have two young kids plus all their activities, so fitting in an hour sessions every other day is about the ceiling for me right now.

I’m genuinely enjoying this type of training, and the community even more so. It’s refreshing to be in a gym that isn’t judgmental, rather than one full of tripods and “influencers.” So I really want to stick it out, but I feel discouraged with myself.

I’ve only been going a month so I’m still very new. Just looking for tips, or to hear if anyone else went through this at first and got past it. Not sure if I’m making sense or if anyone can relate

Has whey become a luxury good ?

Just got back into training after a 2-year hiatus and went online to purchase some whey — wtf has happened? Optimum Nutrition is nearly £100 a tub, I nearly fell off my chair. Where are people buying from? Do I need to re mortgage ?

Thanks

Best UK roasters for milk-based drinks?

I’ve been into specialty coffee for a few months now and I’m looking for some good recommendations on beans and roasters. I drink mainly milk-based drinks and occasionally espresso. Still figuring things out and experimenting with what I like. I’ve ordered from Rave and The Coffee Bean Shop but want to try something different.

Starseeker E55 Pro

My wife bought me a Starseeker E55 Pro for my birthday. By no means am I an experienced coffee enthusiast, nor do I have experience with many grinders other than a cheap Amazon burr grinder I’ve been using for months.

But wow, what a difference this thing makes to my coffee and workflow. I’m literally blown away and kinda now really understanding the discussions around grinders and how they give a greater return on the taste of your coffee. Like I said, I don’t have a huge amount of experience with grinders, and of course this is an “entry level” grinder, but it’s perfect for me and a huge leap forward.

Personally, I think it looks great. The unit itself is heavy and solid metal, which makes it feel really premium.

It’s extremely quiet when running, and of course a little louder when grinding beans. Dialling in is a doddle, and I’m currently getting barely any retention at all other than from my first grind — since then it’s been fine, so much cleaner to operate compared to my old grinder. I use the bellows out of habit, but I’d say I don’t really need to. Overall I’m massively impressed and extremely happy with it.

The only thing that’s a little annoying is the power brick, but it’s easy to hide. Just wanted to do a post as I’ve been really nerding out over coffee since using it. The difference is literally day and night

My first ginger bug

Decided to make a ginger bug for the first time after I had some leftover ginger looking a little tatty. This is day 4. Day 1: 2 tablespoons of chopped ginger and equal parts sugar with 500ml filtered tap water (filter on the tap), then 1 tablespoon of ginger and 1 tablespoon of sugar every day with a good stir.

It’s starting to look a little active now, with foam on top and very, very slight bubbling. It smells quite nice — not too gingery, sweet, and almost floral. I’m guessing this is going in the right direction and looks OK? Still not sure what I’m going to do with it.

Returning to study at 36 and my attention span is zero.

36 years old, not studied as such for many years, but I've recently taken a 12-month online course that's work-related. There are 12 exams in total. I've passed 1 so far and have 11 months left.

To say I'm struggling to study is an understatement. My attention span is zero. I come into the office with the full intention to "smash some studying" and my mind constantly wanders. I'm reading, but my brain isn't absorbing it. I'm constantly up and down out of my seat having "breaks". I just can't seem to sit there, really absorb it, and get into it. Tips to help are welcome... or is this a me issue?

I really want to prove I can do this course, more so for myself, but also because this will help my career. Right now I'm feeling useless.

First coffee came out really bitter ?

I’ve been using an AeroPress for a little while and having really nice coffee. My 2-cup Brikka arrived yesterday. I washed it all, ran a water extraction only, then over the course of the day made 3 coffees in it and discarded them as advised by the instructions. Today I’ve made my first drinkable coffee and it’s so bitter I’ve had to add some sugar to it. I’ve used cold water as per instructions — is this where I’m going wrong?

35cm height limit — moka pot or proper espresso machine for a Nespresso refugee?

Looking for some advice/recommendations on a compact espresso setup, roughly working with around 35cm height from worktop to wall unit.

I’ve been using a Nespresso Citiz with the Aeroccino for many years. Then my wife bought me a portable AeroPress to take fishing. I bought a couple of bags of ground coffee from the supermarket, then slowly started buying better quality coffee from online roasters and really enjoying it. I haven’t had a Nespresso for months and love using my AeroPress. Now I’ve gone down the rabbit hole of wanting to make proper espressos. I was thinking of just getting a moka pot at home alongside my AeroPress, but I’m also thinking I want a proper espresso machine, grinder, etc., as currently I’m buying my beans ground.

I mainly drink my coffee with milk — lattes or flat whites. I don’t want to spend a fortune but also don’t want to buy something I’ll regret. As a complete novice, I would really appreciate some advice on compact kit, or whether a moka pot is just fine.

Thanking you all in advance.

Advice to try and come off sertraline

I've been on 100mg of sertraline for almost 2 years after experiencing depression caused by stress and grieving the loss of my father following a long battle with cancer.

I'm not going to lie, the medication has helped me massively and got me through a really tough time. However, I never wanted to stay on it long term.

My doctor advised me to taper down from 100mg to 75mg for 6 weeks, then to 50mg for 6 weeks, then 25mg for 6 weeks before slowly phasing it out completely.

After dropping from 100mg to 75mg, I felt amazing, actually better than I did on 100mg. I felt more motivated and generally more like myself.

However, after dropping to 50mg, around 2–3 weeks later I started feeling awful. All the usual symptoms seem to have come back. I'm extremely irritable and not very pleasant to be around. I have two young kids and an amazing wife, and it's starting to cause issues at home.

Today I've decided to go back up to 75mg rather than continue down to 25mg.

This is the second time I've struggled when reducing to 50mg, and I'm not sure how I'm eventually supposed to come off the medication, as I don't want to stay on it long term.

Has anyone had a similar experience? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Also, does this sound more like withdrawal symptoms, or could it be a sign that I'm not ready to come off sertraline yet?

Best Online Butchers for Meaty Spare Ribs?

Trying to get my hands on some good-quality, meaty spare ribs. My butcher is great, but when it comes to BBQ cuts and ribs, they aren’t the best. Does anyone have any good recommendations for online butchers that stock them?

Thanks.
