IndieCoffeeClub Update: Accounts, reviews & favourites are live - Thanks UKroasters!

Hey everyone,

A few weeks back I shared indiecoffeeclub.co.uk here and the feedback was better than I had expected. There were also some great ideas put forward, and I'm happy to say we have addressed most of them.

What's New:

  • Accounts are live (You'll get a fun generated handle like coffeeGuzzler_1234)
  • Write reviews across all the coffees
  • Save your favourites (or ones you want to remember)

If you've got a local roaster you love, it'd mean a lot if you signed up and favourited a few of their coffees. It helps other people discover great roasters they might never have heard of, and it keeps the directory useful for everyone.

This is my last post about the site here**,** I don't want to spam a community that's about roasting, not promotion. I'm very grateful for all the feedback. The site will keep improving quietly in the background.

Hacienda Copey Takara from glass coffee

Nice juicy acidity and texture. The aroma of the brewed coffee is amazing, good sweetness too. Really enjoyed this one.
Also shout out to whoever handles their Instagram. I think it’s their roaster. But really good peeps and excellent customer service.

London coffee reccs

I am heading up to London tomorrow for an interview in the late afternoon. I'm highly unlikely to get the job, so would like to make the most of the trip. I'll go up early so that I have the entire afternoon.

Any coffee shops I should definitely visit? I predominantly drip light to ultralight roasts as filter, and really don't like advanced processed stuff. Where should I visit?

So far I have Prufrock and Scenery on the list, maybe Nostos but it looks pretty pricey.

Kapow blend

Everything about this coffee tells me it should be a good daily driver but I’ve struggled with it a bit. Not got much of the bag left so just wanted to see if anyone had a recipe recommendation?

Currently trying to dial in water for the first time so this might have something to do with it.

Any advice appreciated though.

Aeropress, v60 or cafetière

Recommend Thermal Shock Beans?

Last Winter I had a few truly excellent thermal shock processed beans through Scenery that really rocked my world.

Unfortunately, so far this year a lot of my bean purchases have been disappointing to middling.

Does anyone know of some particularly tasty (and not oppressively expensive) thermal shock beans that are currently available?

Thanks!

Scenery coffee (gesha question)

Thank you for the recs to visit Scenery in London - a great spot to get some work done and taste the coffee too.

First order was the Colombian as a pour over. Gorgeous floral, light, tea like notes. Wildly, the second time I have ever had tea like notes - first time being Saturday just gone on a Dark Arts pourover from Higher Ground.

The Gesha I was expecting to be phenomenal but kinda tasted like... baked beans? Anyone else had this before or are my taste buds going craaaaazy...

KillBean : about 8 weeks coffee resting

Hi guys — this is Yanyi, founder and roaster at KillBean.

I just joined Reddit today and wanted to open up a space for people to ask questions about coffee — not just KillBean. Feel free to ask me anything about roasting, brewing, sourcing, processing, resting coffee, etc.

I’ve noticed a lot of discussion recently around our suggested 8-week resting period, so I wanted to explain the reasoning behind it.

We roast our coffees quite light, meaning the beans have relatively low expansion during roasting and keep a very dense, hard structure. Coffee beans are naturally porous, but with lighter roasting, gases like CO₂ tend to stay trapped inside the bean for much longer.

On top of that, we removed the one-way valve from our coffee bags. Most people think the valve is only there to release gas, but it also allows aromatic compounds to escape over time. By sealing the coffee in a more isolated CO₂-rich environment, we’ve found it helps preserve volatile aromatics inside the bean for longer — a bit similar to how nitrogen is used in crisp packaging.

Does that mean you must wait 8 weeks before drinking the coffee? Not necessarily.

The coffee can still taste great much earlier. In our shop, we usually start brewing coffees around 5–7 days after roast and they already taste very enjoyable. But through our own testing, we’ve consistently found that many of our lighter roasted coffees peak around 8–12 weeks after roast, especially for filter brewing.

Another question people ask is: “Why not just sell coffee roasted a month ago then?”

We actually used to do that. But many customers strongly associate freshness with quality and preferred receiving coffees roasted closer to their order date. So nowadays we roast closer to dispatch while still recommending longer resting for the best flavour experience.

Curious to hear what everyone thinks about longer resting periods — and whether you’ve had similar experiences with lighter roasts

Yeast Fermented beans

Has anyone tried the Zennor Finca Anaya
Colombia - Sergio Darío Aranda Gómez
Washed + Yeast Fermentation Ombligon
Taste notes of Strawberry Bubble Gum, Blueberry & Lychee

It’s truly a coffee with no mistakes in my opinion

It smells amazing and it fills up the roam.
Something about yeast inoculated beans and how they smell when brewing gets to me.
I’ve got just 3 doses left and it’s out of stock 🥲 as soon as it gets back I’ll grab a kilo to enjoy over the summer.
If anyone has recommendations with beans of the same profile id love to try out something new 😊

Panama Finca Esther/ Direct Trade Green Beans.

Hello gang! I hope you're all well.

I run a micro roastery called Swan Song and have been sourcing directly from a farm in Panama Finca Esther in Boquette.

I've been working with Martin Chavez a few years now. All these coffees are pretty unique and still taste great 8-9 months on from harvest. Just never gave them that marketing push needed to sell all the stock I ordered. So with the fresh harvest samples en route - I wanted to open this up to the UK home roasters/coffee nerds like myself who will appreciate it like I do and want to test themselves using something new. All are UK exclusives and the BOP lot is a world exclusive.

Panama Finca Esther. CO2 Flush, Anaerobic Slow Dry. SL34          20kg      25/26 Harvest. Moisture Lvl: 10.4%. Cup Score: 86.5 £25.00/kg ex Shipping 1kg minimum

Panama Finca Esther. Darkroom, Anaerobic Slow Dry. SL34          20kg       25/26 Harvest Moisture Lvl: 10.2% Cup Score: 86.75 £25.00/kg ex Shipping 1kg minimum

Panama Finca Esther. BOP 2025 Entry Lot: Darkroom Dehydrated CO2 Flush, Anaerobic Slow Dry. SL34.          10kg       25/26 Harvest. Moisture Lvl: 10.3% Cup Score: 87.00 £30.00/kg ex Shipping 1kg minimum

Flavour Profile: Citrus, Grapefruit & Black Tea. Creamy, Sweet and balanced.

Give us a message if you're interested.

Selling them at cost - so really reasonable for those who are looking to roast something special at home, or learn how to approach some unique processes.

I have a very strange friend 😂 Irn Bru Coffee

So I found some old pictures from almost a year ago … my friend watches a lot of stuff on TikTok ( not me ) and she saw about doing espresso into irn bru - she had me make it for her and she actually liked it…..

Has anyone else tried it 😂

Elsewhere - How do we rate them?

These are all from the same bag of Purple Rain. I entered the prize draw a while ago so I have 5 bags of Elsewhere. I've noticed they all have really bad uneven roasts, a lot of shells, and just a lot more defects than other roasters. Not sure if this is just my batch.

I've not been able to get good extraction (pour over) from any of the 5 bags. They are just not...good in my opinion. And my friends around me have said they are not big fans.

How are we generally rating them? Are they one of the better roasters, or just average? The amount of defective beans in one bag is putting me off from purchasing another time.

Anyone here tried Tynemouth coffee company? I've seen good overall reviews online but not much from coffee nerds

I was looking at them cause they're local and seem pretty cheap (I'm a student so that matters) and I was wondering if any of you had tried them? I'd likely be brewing with aeropress and looking at some of their lighter roasts
