Imagine a grey-goo scenario that got frozen in time on earth. It stopped before completely consuming earth. A circle preserves some islands along the equator.

What would you like to see in that world?

A shipwreck graveyard, a beached cargo ship converted into a building, overpopulated islands built from the limited cargo from the remaining ships?

I’d like to think some of the population/factions would try to travel with the closing circle. For story sake i would have the grey-goo close in a perfect circle.

Would factions cooperate to stay alive while it the circle closed in? What about after the circle stopped, do the factions work together? Do the survivors have enough remaining technology to start a mini civilization in the safe-zone?

I have a question regarding the construction of a space elevator. For my story I want to build the structure around the biological core, that was grown from a cosmic entity.

Would it change construction process if there was already a tether connecting the anchor point to earth?

Could it speed up the process of building it? If so how much faster would it be to build?
