Good budget decks for child?

Hey hey! Long time magic player here, just got into the tcg today with my 8 year old. We bought the battle academy box that came with the cinder ace, Pikachu, and eevee deck. We played it for around 2 hours tonight after supper and he had such a fun time. He’s got a ton of cards that he’s been collecting (nothing really valuable, just a bunch of bulk and a binder with some neat looking cards).

Where would I find decks that are cheap but fun and cohesive? I’m not looking for a tier 1 meta deck or anything, just something more competent than the box premade decks that are easy enough to understand for an 8 year old and myself and my wife (who also plays magic)

Is my deck unfair?

For context, I’ve been playing magic for almost 20 years, exclusively commander the last 6 years with my same pod - friends I’ve known since about 2011.

I moved states a few years ago, so my main way of playing is spell table or cockatrice.

However last weekend I went down to visit and I only brought a few decks with me, we went to a game store during my first day in town and I picked up the hearthhull precon. Now, we typically play at a high bracket 3 level, though we each have one bracket 4 deck that we play on occasion. This is important context because my unmodified precon played 9 games over the course of my stay… and won 6 of those games. Then I got home and wanted to upgrade the deck, as I really enjoyed the play style and had a bunch of landfall stuff in my collection that wasn’t being utilized.

Last night was my first time playing the upgraded list - we played two games via cockatrice, and it won both of those games. Granted, the first game was more of being handed the win by my opponents [[Mr. Negative]] , but the second game was pretty decisive.

Now, to my friends’ credit, no one has complained about the deck. But this is the first time I’ve had a deck have such an absurd win rate, even with a lower sample size, and it made me feel a bit guilty. So I wanted to get some outside perspective to see if my deck is too strong, or maybe I’m just having a hot streak?

Worth noting, I intentionally did not include the constant mists/ glacial chasm as I think they create an unfun experience.

Help for a newbie to Pokemon

So for a little context, I’m in my early 30s. I played a smidgen of pokemon on the gameboy when I was young (like 7-8 years old), but the most recent game I played was one of the green ones (either leaf green or emerald, I can’t remember which).

My 8 year old recently got big into Pokemon, both collecting cards and playing champions. I started getting into it as another way for us to spend time together, and to my surprise I’m really, really enjoying it. However… this game makes me feel so stupid sometimes.

Growing up I never learned type matchups, I just brute forced my way through the game with pokemon that I thought looked cool.

I started playing champions a little under 3 weeks ago, and surprisingly hit master ball tier 4 before the season reset. Granted, I was copying builds I’d seen on YouTube, because my knowledge of the game was so minimal I had no hope of making a cohesive team on my own.

Fast forward to the night before the reset and I put together a team (not entirely of my own ideas, I did have some input from a buddy of mine that’s been a lifelong Pokemon fan), but I was just happy to have a team that wasn’t copied and pasted from the internet, and…

I’m losing. All the time. I’m ultra ball tier 3 at the moment and I’ve dropped back into UB4 a few times by now. I understand that I’m new and have next to no understanding of Pokemon compared to most of yall, but I feel like I’ve learned a lot in the last 2 weeks. I’ve included screenshots of my team, please help me figure out if there’s a vital mistake in my team comp, or if my brain just doesn’t have enough wrinkles to make it out of ultra ball again.

Sorry for the novel, but boy I don’t think I’ve been so flustered by a video game in a long time…

PS - the lil teacup is supposed to be a maushold or clefable for “follow me”, but I unfortunately haven’t unlocked one yet, so rage powder or whatever it’s called is the closest thing I have available to me.

I greatly appreciate any help and suggestions, and I’m glad to finally be a part of this fandom, even if I’m 25+ years late!

Need help with cuts for Y’shtola B3

Hey hey! Recently acquired the fancy version of my favorite character from FFXIV, so I made this deck around her. Everything in this list (maybe board included) I have available to me, I’m just struggling to cut down to 100.

I sold my smothering tithe so that’s no longer an option unfortunately but I think this will be spicy nonetheless.

Thanks in advance for any recommendations!

RogSi vs Green Goblin

I’ve been in the middle of brewing RogSi as my second cEDH deck, after finalizing my Stella Lee list the last few days and getting comfortable with it. Popped into my card shop and picked up some singles, one of them being the comic art [[Norman Osborn]] with the grixis green goblin on the back, simply because I’ve been a huge spiderman fan my entire life and I loved the artwork. But I got to thinking, and now I can’t decide if I want to keep RogSi as this cEDH deck and just make green goblin a normal commander deck, or if it would be more fun to make GG the commander of my grixis pile cEDH deck instead.

Would love some input from people who’ve played one or both of these decks, “fun” factor matters as I won’t be playing in any tournaments (at least right now)

Can this deck hang at cEDH tables?

Basically, title. Fell in love with Stella Lee recently, and while I have gathered from various posts and primers that she isn’t a top tier deck, it seems the general consensus is that she can still win games.

Moving on to my question… can *this* Stella deck hang with cEDH? Every card that’s in this list outside of the “possible upgrades” I own, but I do not have any of the super expensive stuff. No volc, no LED, stuff like that.

I don’t have any delusions of winning, I just want to know if I were to take it to cEDH night at my LGS if I’d be able to at least be a contender, or if the lack of fast mana would put me in the dirt without a fighting chance.

Worth noting, I have never played cEDH before. I typically play in bracket 3 and I usually play black graveyard decks, so I’m completely out of my comfort zone with this one 🔫🤠🔫

Edit: would probably help if I included the deck link…

When to buy botrk/yun tal?

Hey yall! I’m relatively new to viego, just started playing him last week and basically one-tricking him in ranked and having a ton of fun, and some good success too.

I’ve been watching lolelekktro and perryjg to improve my viego gameplay as well as my overall jungling macro, and from what I’ve heard from elekktro he says to never ever buy botrk or yun tal, however I have seen perryjg build both items on separate occasions.

So my question is, when do you all consider building those items, if at all? So far I’ve been going the standard build of kraken -> collector -> LDR/mortal reminder -> shieldbow-> GA, but I’m not going to pretend I’m an expert. Genuinely curious on game-specific itemization as I feel like that will help me step up my level of play.

Bonus screenshot of my first pentakill with viego today before work, and yes I’m in pisslow im doing ranked for the first time ever really (got placed silver in s6 and then always got too anxious and went back to normals) but I’m proud of it

Thanks!

Just wanted to share, I picked up viego about 4 days ago and fell in love with it. I’ve been playing for a long time, although I normally only played normals with my friends. But since they all quit I decided to try my hand at ranked for the first time since season 6 where I was placed silver and then never played again. I know it’s low elo but I’m working on it 😅 really happy with the results so far though! I’ve never really “mained” a champion before because I got bored of playing the same thing over again, but I don’t think I’ll ever get tired of this guy.
