Introducing the next Ancient Guardian: Zephyr!

Making her home in the mountains of Antarctica, the windiest place on Earth, Zephyr is the Guardian of the Air, and is by far the most secretive of the Guardians. For one thing, because of where she lives, her existence wasn’t even confirmed until 2013, with any prior information coming purely from ancient paintings in Australia. Because of this, Zephyr is much more mysterious than her allies.

In terms of personality, Zephyr is much more neutral towards humans, even being liable to attack when fired upon, whereas the others tend to ignore being attacked.

Abilities

Shockwave Wings: Zephyr can use her wings to displace a large amount of air, creating shockwaves that can level entire chunks of cities at once. She generates weaker versions of these while flying normally, but she can also use a singular huge flap of her wings to generate a much more powerful variant.

Wind Screech: Zephyr can also create a much more directed shockwave from her mouth, capable of blowing opponents back and injuring them with the environment.

Physical Abilities: Zephyr is no slouch in close range dogfights either, with her blade-like limbs which can be very useful in physical combat.

Finally have a place to show this girl off lmao, this is Volcanis, the Fire Monster!

One of the four ancient guardians of Earth, Volcanis is the Guardian of Fire, making her home in volcanoes and using channels of magma to navigate across the planet. It’s thought that her last period of activity resulted in the Lake Toba eruption 75,000 years ago, which she likely used to destroy a threat to the planet.

Despite her destructive powers, Volcanis is the most approachable of the guardians, showing signs of recognizing and caring about specific humans, and fighting to save humans specifically.

Abilities

Lava Breath: Volcanis can spew magma from her mouth, burning her enemies and entrapping them in volcanic rock as well. This magma is hot enough to melt steel, and even the toughest monsters can be severely injured by it.

Magma Manipulation: Displacing and swimming around in magma naturally can cause geological disturbances, allowing to track her movements by following earthquakes caused by them, the severity of said earthquakes can vary depending on how close she is to the surface. Her emergences can also cause volcanic eruptions, and some legends tie her back to the Mount Vesuvius eruption that destroyed Pompeii. However, she can unintentionally cause them by straying too close to an already active volcano, and it’s possible that one of these occasions triggered the Mt. St. Helens eruption in 1980. When she awakened in 2020, she caused the Yellowstone Volcano to erupt, though said eruption was thankfully small enough to not be lethal.

Physical abilities: Being a kaiju, Volcanis is naturally very strong and durable. In addition, her Millenia of battle experience make her a very skilled and experienced fighter.

Hot Take: Godzilla vs Kong should have come before King of the Monsters

I know, this is kind of a tired talking point by this point, but this isn’t about “Ghidorah being introduced too early”, it’s about the tone and the way it’s written, because I can’t help but feel like KotM’s tone is just… *odd* compared to the rest of the MonsterVerse, especially when you consider where it is in the timeline.

With all of the callbacks, fanservice moments, and the apocalyptic tone and stakes. Not to mention the “dawn of a new era” nature of the ending, KotM honestly feels like a grand finale to a much larger series. Tell me it doesn’t. I dare you.

Case in point, Seriezawa’s death. The way it plays out makes it seem like it’s meant to be an epic, emotional sendoff to a beloved franchise mainstay… and this is his second ever appearance (and in his first appearance, he didn’t even have a major role).

All of that combined means it feels kinda weird to look at KotM and find that it was never even intended to be the final entry (even when it was first greenlit, Godzilla vs Kong was greenlit at the same time and was always planned to come out after KotM).

Heck, it’s not even that hard to rewrite it in a way where GvK happening before KotM makes sense. Just have the Ghidorah skull that Apex uses be a fossilized head that was torn off during Godzilla and Ghidorah’s clash in prehistoric times. Even better, when Ghidorah overtakes MechaGodzilla and makes it go rogue, it’s a perfect way to foreshadow Ghidorah’s threat level and herald how big of a menace he is in KotM, especially when you consider how violently Godzilla reacts to it. Then The New Empire could have come after King of the Monsters, functioning as a sort of “breather episode” before the next story arc (Which seems to be about SpaceGodzilla) begins.

That could creat a more coherent narrative that fits the cinematic universe the MonsterVerse is meant to be.

What do you guys think?

How I’d Rewrite RWBY: The Grimm

(Previous Post: https://www.reddit.com/r/RWBYcritics/s/h2zFDgfgSh)

Okay, before we get started, let’s get the obvious out of the way. Yes, it is indeed me; Dinoboy225. It’s the same guy. What happened to my old account? A ton of stuff that I don’t feel like explaining right now, mostly involving me getting frickin’ hacked and impersonated. Bottom line; My old account got deleted, but I’m back, and I’m not letting no stupid Reddit drama get in my way!

Anyways, the Grimm. In all honesty I think the Grimm in canon are one of the few consistently good things in the show, they have cool designs, their fights are pretty cool, and a lot of the ideas behind them can be really neat, namely the Apathy and the Nuckelavee. It certainly helps that they’re not human and were made from the ground up to be vicious monsters, meaning that there’s no real character to ruin them or any horribly written backstory to get in the way. Plus, it allows the heroes to tear them to shreds with sadistic abandon without anyone feeling bad about it!

That said, I do have some issues with them. For one they are terrible at being a threatening force. Ever since the Red Trailer, the heroes slaughter them en masse without any effort, and most new variants of Grimm, while cool, are introduced and then promptly die in the same scene.

So, in my rewrite, it’s only natural that I expand more on them, namely by giving them more variations and making them feel like more of a threat.

Now I won’t go too far in this direction, they are ultimately Mooks after all, and none of the main characters end up biting the dust because of a random Grimm lol, but it should absolutely be more of a challenge to take them down. Each Grimm has a different way of doing this. For example, Beowolves tend to overwhelm people with sheer numbers, tiring them out or pressuring them until they make a mistake. Namely, in my rewrite, Ruby is the only one who can reliably take down hordes of Beowolves by herself, in fact, she wears her slaughter of them in the Red Trailer as a point of pride specifically because it’s so notoriously hard to do. While none of the other characters are slouches in this department, they still have a limit of how many Grimm they can handle at once.

In Volume 2, Oobleck suggests that Grimm get smarter with won battles, and I would definitely play into this more. They learn their opponents and figure out how to counter them. For example, try to keep your distance and shoot projectiles? The Grimm start throwing rocks and stuff at you to keep you on your toes long enough to close the distance.

Another way I’d get around this is by forcing the heroes to get smart. In canon, the Grimm all too often just get overpowered and killed with brute force or sometimes with Silver Eyes. In my rewrite, the heroes are usually forced to get creative in order to best them. The best part is that doing this pulls quadruple duty; By forcing the heroes to get creative when killing them, I not only make the Grimm look like more of a threat, but it makes the heroes look cooler, and I get to come up with more creative kill methods! It’s a win/win/win/win!

Now as for my ideas for other Grimm variants, I have way too many ideas to list here, so you’ll just have to actually read my rewrite to see all of them lol. (which you can do here: https://archiveofourown.org/series/4074376) In the meantime I’ll just list three.

The Gidora (pronounced He-Dora): A three-headed dragon that can breathe fire from its mouths. It can also fly, making it a deadly threat to huntsmen caught off guard.

Thunderbug: Named for the rumbling noise it creates by burrowing, the Thunderbug is a burrowing Grimm, popping out of the ground to ambush its prey, and often creating sinkhole traps to trip up huntsmen.

Omniclaw: A hermit crab like Grimm with spider legs and pincers on each one. It’s tough shell is impervious to pretty much anything thrown at it, meaning that the only way to effectively defeat it is to somehow trick it into stabbing itself to death with its own pincers.

New species aren’t the only idea I got. Remember how Roman was stealing a bunch of dust in the Beacon Era? Well there’s a reason why now: Salem uses it to experiment on her Grimm. Augmenting them with elemental powers to make them even more dangerous.

I would go more into detail with their backstory, but I believe I already did that with Salem’s post, so you can just go back and read that, since it’s the previous post and all.

Anyways, that’s all I got for now. See ya!

Hot take: I think the thagomizer should be a consistent design element from now on

My reasoning

  1. It looks cool

  2. It makes sense considering that Stegosaurus is part of what inspired Godzilla’s design in the first place

  3. It looks cool
