What should be in a CV?

Hi. I ask this as I’ve seen a substantial number of Year 1 students put a whole list of their participation in insight / open day. If it was a vacation scheme, I would understand more as you’re working on substantive work for a month, but a 1-day or few hours, sometime virtual event?

Please correct me if I’m wrong if this is a well received practice by firms in the UK. I myself am an incoming LLB student and am doing up my CV as we speak.

Good price to buy still?

Hi everyone. I officially became legal last year and the first thing I did was to create an account to buy VOO.

Bought every now and then at the start of this year, then faced some financial problems and was forced to stop for a few months. Now thinking of re-entering at 708-ish.

Still long way to go?

Earning money on campus

Hi, what is the portal that showcases the various jobs on campus (eg TA, RA) and how can I access that?

Also, I heard that there’s some academic awards for best / joint best in subject that also grants a nominal sum of 50 or if better, a few hundred pounds. Anyone knows which law subjects, in particular, have this?

Best mobile plan

Hi, I’m looking for a super worth it data plan to use for study purposes for the next 3 years. For context, I’m an international student and I’m currently considering VOXI, which offers a £10/month for 80 GB and unlimited data for social media plan, but not sure if it’s the most worthwhile.

Also, some quick miscellaneous questions:

  1. Can I purchase the eSIM via their online page in my home country and activate it upon arrival in the UK so I can have mobile connection instantaneously?

  2. If I’m heading back to my home country for a few months during the vacation period, can I not pay for that few months? Must I cancel, or can I just not pay?

  3. Does a eSIM come up with a UK number?

Baggage

Hi. I’m flying from Singapore to London in September and am a little confused with the baggage allowance.

For context, I’m a student in Economy, so my allowance is 40 kg, but I believe this is split up — something along the lines of 32 kg and 8 kg, which I’m confused with.

Also, for checked-in luggage, I understand that the length, breadth and height must not exceed 158 cm (please correct me if I’m wrong), but how will that translate to inches which is what we usually use when buying luggages (eg 24, 26, 28, 29 or 30 inch luggages)?

I’m asking this as I’ve seen Taobao selling luggages that claim to be 50 inches and apparently can be checked in, but many TikTok live streamers selling luggages say that the max that can be checked in is a 29 inch luggage.

Also, is a duffel bag fine to be carried onboard and placed in the overhead cabin?

Sick as heck

Anyone else getting sick recently and having difficulty recovering? More specifically, URTI?

Have been coughing non-stop with phlegm since late June, went to the Polyclinic multiple times, tried all sorts of medications (including lozenges, some throat spray, antibiotics, vitamin that dissolves in water, etc.) and it still isn’t getting any better. Is this a trend now?

Quite worried as national exams are upcoming.

Saving as a student

Hi all. I’m a student studying abroad and have limited financial means. Hope to save as much as possible.

Apart from the student discount (think it was 10%?) on Economic Value, how else can I save? How in advance must I book to save the most?

For example, if I intend to fly back to Singapore in December 2026 and June 2027, what is the best time to book the ticket? When does the cost start to rise?

Course Materials

Hi all, how are materials disseminated / made available to students? I’m intending to occupy myself with some pre-readings during my flight to London in September (since it’s a long 13 over hours), but not too sure how can I access my course’s materials before school starts.

Immigration at Gatwick

Hi. I’m an international student landing at Gatwick North Terminal on 17 September at around 10 am UK time.

Will be taking National Express to my non-London university, but not sure how long immigration will take and how much of a buffer should I factor in between my landing time and my coach time.

Any kind souls please advise.

Best way to get to UPC

Hi. Will be flying over to Notts in September. Landing in Heathrow in the afternoon UK time at Terminal 2.

I’ve heard mixed responses on getting over from Heathrow to Notts — some say FlixBus, others say National Express. Which is generally the safer option?

Also, which stop do they alight on? National Express, for example, just states ‘University of Nottingham’, not the specific bus stop number on Google Map.

Tuition fee

Hi, I’m paying my tuition fee via an education loan from my home country’s bank. Was wondering how this will work.

I understand there’s Flywire, but I was informed I need an invoice and have to upload some Pay Now QR Code?

When must I upload these as well?

Requesting for Guidance

Hi! I’m an international student from a common law jurisdiction currently reading law at a semi-target university (think Bristol, Nottingham and Durham equivalent), hoping to get into a MC/US firm based in London upon graduation. I’ve missed the opportunity to sign up for my school’s mentorship programme as I was settling some family-related affairs, and hoped if any kind souls could provide some advice on my current progress.

Academically, a high 2:1 right now. Hoping for FCH but it’s been genuinely challenging for a 75+;

Have a number of previous legal internship experiences, each 1 month, in my home country (2-3 more slated for 2027; haven’t applied for any UK-based ones).

Currently a Legal Executive in a boutique firm. Have been with the firm for around a year now;

Part of my home country’s society, mooting society, pro bono society, and involved in a few law-related projects;

Few varsity debating accolades at the national level.

I have a CV crafted out as well.

offering internships in poly

parents trying to find out how can they offer internships to students (in particular, those studying AI etc) as i was previously from poly as well and hated my boss

not sure if they need to write in or fill up some form?

also dk if there are any specific requirements set by the polys (eg must work 9-5 and in office) but for them, they’re flexible and willing to offer work from home (unless there’s a client meeting, then will ask for the student’s availability — can come and take minutes, for the exposure iygwim). commission-based structure, so for every case closed due to said student’s contribution, you get paid (should be in the low 4 digits, i believe?)

no idea if this arrangement will be accepted also

Confused over Solicitor’s Route

Starting my LLB in a decently reputable RG university this fall. Slated to complete my studies in Jun 2029.

Under the new SQE, I understand I need to complete SQE 1 and 2, gain 2 years of QWE and be admitted as a Solicitor. However, I’m a little confused with —

(a) the pathways available (eg do most students take a LLM after their LLB, or what do they usually do?);

(b) the timeline — if I were to graduate in Jun 2029, what am I expecting if all goes well?

I was also told that you can do your SQE 1 and 2 while gaining the QWE, but can’t find much about this.

I understand these information can be found easily online, but as I’m an international student from another common law jurisdiction which differs slightly to be qualified, I’m still a little confused after some research.

Also, what is the salary progression like as I will effectively be 120,000 pounds in debt from the LLB?

Question about Accommodation

Hi! Can I ask:

  1. If I’ll reach Nottingham at 8-10 pm, can I still move in?
  2. Are there any way I can ask the university to prepare the bedding essentials (eg bed sheets and pillows) so when I reach it’s already in the room?
  3. If I intend to continue my tenancy as an international student, can I leave my belongings in the room while I fly back to my home country from Jul to Sep?
  4. If I’m unable to, how do international students usually store their belongings? There’s no way I bring everything I brought to Nottingham to and fro again. 😭

Thank you so much in advance.

LF Litigation Internships

Fully recognise that most students would hit the streets with cold emails, but I’d like to be bold and test water.

If you’re a lawyer who does litigation (either criminal or civil, doesn’t matter) and are open to having an intern draft your papers and assist as co-counsel in court proceedings, comment or drop me a DM.

Happy to discuss further and forward my CV.

Have represented clients at all levels of the Singapore Courts, including under the auspices of the SIAC.

Please help me…

I firmed my unconditional offer almost 2 weeks ago.

Unfortunately, I have not received my NottinghamHub ID, nor have I received the PDF of my official offer letter - only UCAS says that I have accepted.

Wrote in to the university on at least 5 occasions over the spread of the 2 weeks as I am concerned with the Student Visa (which I need to verify the CAS via NottinghamHub) and to secure my local bank loan (which I need the official offer letter), both of which will take time.

I have attached the email I received from the university and the screenshot of my page. Don’t see a “log ticket” button at all. Can’t call the university as I’m abroad and do not have that service available on my telco.

On the other occasions, the responses I received seemed to be copied and pasted also. I’m really worried now.

TLDR:
- Can’t log into NottinghamHub to verify CAS and can’t seem to file a technical support request too
- Have not received official offer letter to secure bank loan despite 2 weeks from firming on UCAS
- UCAS ID and Nottingham ID all appears to not be recognisable when I attempt to reset password

Matriculation

Have firmed the offer via UCAS but yet to receive the PDF of the offer letter, CAS letter, and the details of my NottinghamHub ID. Was told this is due to the data breach - is this normal?

I’ll need these to arrange for my bank loan, student visa and make other necessary arrangements.
