Types of Clues

When watching or reading mysteries, I find myself distinguishing between two major types of clues.

The first is where the clue is supplied by the narrator or filmmaker either explicitly or subtly. This can happen, for example, when a paragraph describing a crime is followed by a paragraph describing a character, suggesting guilt by association. In film it can happen when the music subtly changes or when the camera lingers on a character’s facial expression indicating thought, worry, guilt, etc.

The other is the type of clue that are observable by the characters themselves, such as objects left in a room, windows left open, warm tea pots, etc. As readers and viewers, we see the details without bias, as the characters see them.

Both of these types can be (and often are) misdirections, but they feel very different whether they are productive clues or red herrings.

My question is what are these two types of clues called? Have I omitted another major type of clue? Do others feel like the narrative/filmmaker clues are less satisfying than the ones the other characters see? Thoughts?

The Barrytown Trilogy

Three great Irish films written by Roddy Doyle; The Commitments, The Snapper, & The Van. I wanted to join the discussion, but the older threads are archived. Anyone else watch these recently?

Dartmoor or Exmoor in 2 days in mid-July?

We have two days between Bath and staying with friends in Cotswolds. My partner really wants to see horses in the Dartmoor/Exmoor area. I’m worried there will be a lot of driving and crowds. It looks like Exmoor is closer on the map, but not by much. Any recommendations or warnings? Staying in b&bs or AirBnBs. Not too interested in shopping, nightlife, etc. Thanks!

Your time starts now

For some tasks, guests are given an hour to create something, and then their creations look like it took days. Series 7, ep 10, for example, they recreate a video game. It must be one hour to conceive of, order supplies, etc, right? What are the rules in fine print?

Stone Temple Pilots and the Carpenters

Stone Temple Pilots are the Carpenters of the 90s. In a good way. Both had giant and ubiquitous hits. Both had a sound that was emblematic of their respective decades. Both had tragic singer stories. Both were stronger singles artists than album artists. Listen to Interstate Love Song and tell me it doesn’t sound like the melody was cleverly lifted from Superstar.

The sheriff said,“Do it now because he’s dead, he’s hungry, and he’s not your father anymore!” But as I brought the hammer down onto his forehead, he winked at me and said “Goodnight, son.”

Is There Gas in the Car?

What are some lines that people sing with pride, like “You were high” and “Yes, there’s gas in the car!”? Not just catchy choruses like “Only a fool would say that” but singular iconic lines?

Frank Tayell: Surviving the Evacuation

I am really enjoying Book 1: London and want to chat with someone about it. There is practically nothing out there about Frank Tayell. The series has 24 or more books in it and there are spin offs and other series. Anybody reading these too?

There was just no way I could get my hips through the same opening I had squeezed my chest through. My partner behind me had been complaining about the cold since the flashlight died, but has been silent for the last 12 minutes.

Stats? Play counts?

Does Apple Music let you check what you have been listening to on a micro level? I saw a post on another thread where someone showed how many times they had listened to a string of albums in the last week. I have been listening to Boards of Canada Inferno nonstop since it came out. How many times, no one asked? I don’t know, no one, I just don’t know.

Titles on Shelf?

Is there a setting to show the title or other info on the shelf below a book, like the “Discover” or “Listen Again” shelf tags? Sometimes the cover is less informative than it could be.

TBR shelf ideas

Looking for a way to keep a shortlist of to-be-read books, new arrivals, nightstand sort of organization. I have genres and tags for sorting. I find collections less appealing because they don’t show on a virtual bookshelf (unless I am missing a setting). What do you all do?
