Newly Sentient Being thoughts

When Live Rope first came out, I made a super hyperbolic post about how it was likely the best thing Swans ever released, and thankfully, that post aged pretty well, as it's most certainly among their best.

I resisted doing the same with Newly Sentient Being, despite already claiming it as their best set live when I saw it twice last year.

After 5/6 listens, I've got to be honest - I think this might be their crowning achievement. It's absolutely sensational beyond words. Every single track is a marvel. Need I say any words on The End of Forgetting? I believe it is the best thing they have ever done under the name Swans. Then we have the Merge - everything I have wanted from Swans since they reunited. Locking into that groove endlessly, to then slip into a slinky, dub outro with some exceptional lyrics and atmosphere... The now essential version of Paradise is Mine, taking what was already a great song and draping in additional menace and ambience. Newly Sentient Being is an absolute monster that covers all elements of Swans from beginning to end; the quintessential commentary on my favourite band of all time. And to finish it off, The End of Regretting, the credits soundtrack. Such a marvelous, eccentric way to close this chapter.

I am absolutely in love with this record and I am so grateful it exists and I can listen to it for ever more.

Any bands similar to the YMMR noise section?

Noise and Noise Rock are two of my favourite genres, but I don't think I've ever come across anyone else who captures that blistering wall of noise quite like MBV do live.

Who is the closest you can think of that gets anywhere near?

I'm talking guitars tearing through fabric, drums being beaten into the ground, sustained, atonal wall of chaos

UK Drone/Experiemental music labels?

Hey - I recently finished work on a couple of drone records for a new project and I am looking for small labels in the UK that could potentially be interested in releasing them. Ideally on cassette or CD.

Anyone got any label suggestions that accept submissions?

Power bank recommendations?

I am looking to get a power bank since I much prefer playing in handheld, but hate how quick this thing runs down.

I'm looking for a fairly budget option, as I will only be using it for the Switch 2 - what is a good budget option, please?

I released this record a couple of years ago, Swans fans might like it

Apologies if these kinds of posts annoy people, but I'd love it if even one person checked this record out. Bleak is my mate and me - this is a 100% improvised piece of long-form music that combines drone, dark ambient, minimal, totalism, harsh noise and musique concrete. It's long, 77 minutes, which I think can put some people off, but surely Swans fans are braced for that...

A little while ago, I posted my first commander deck. I've taken advice on board. Thoughts?

Just as the title says really. I took out a lot of "bulk" cards that were in there. This is as much as my budget will allow at the moment without breaking the bank! Oh, and I have a Swiftfoot Boots on the way for some commander protection.

I want to get Torment of Hailfire next for it, but other than that, pretty happy with it!

The Cold Between

It hung from the eaves,
held in place by
the cold that burns
though without heat,
a bite all of its own,
and from it, a single
drop, a glass bead
through which all
is reflected on its journey.

It sees the time
that we sledged
and you cut your knee
on the tree stump,
and at first we laughed
but soon, you cried,
and we went home
where the pipes were warm
and mum took care.

It was there
when you learnt
and saw your path
ahead of you
in the snow,
and you left.
I watched and waved;
you looked small then
though I was smaller.

It continues
as I grow
and you're still small;
I could still hear you
in the backroom
when you donned your
hat and coat.
Should we take the sledge?

It nears the end
and you haven't returned,
but I'm used to that now.
The dust has claimed
your things and space,
though I haven't befriended it;
I can't face its stare
and it doesn't know my name.

The journey ends
and like a chandelier,
it shatters on the surface.
Shards dance and settle;
a small stream
that washes away.
Its glitter dulls
and the next mirror
braces for its flight.

Took a break from writing poetry as I felt a little like I was repeating myself and stuck in a cycle. Anyway, thought I would dip my toe back in this morning. Always open to critique!
