New broadcasting deal blocks ability to watch skating in Kazakhstan

Text of post:

“I am writing to bring to your attention an issue regarding the availability of ISU sports broadcasts in Kazakhstan.

ISU's official YouTube livestreams are currently geo- blocked in Kazakhstan because the broadcasting rights for Kazakhstan, along with Russia and Belarus, have been granted to Okko.

However, there is a significant problem: Okko does not make its sports content available in Kazakhstan. According to Okko's own information, sports broadcasts are available only within Russia and Belarus.

This creates a situation in which viewers in Kazakhstan effectively have no legal way to watch ISU competitions:
- ISU's official YouTube broadcasts are unavailable because Kazakhstan is treated as an Okko territory.
- Okko does not provide access to its sports content in Kazakhstan.

In other words, Kazakhstan is included in Okko's broadcasting territory from ISU's perspective, while Okko itself does not actually provide the relevant service to viewers located in Kazakhstan.

This situation is particularly unfortunate at a time when interest in ISU sports in Kazakhstan is understandably very high. Kazakhstan is currently home to the reigning Olympic champion in figure skating, while our speed skaters have also delivered outstanding performances on the Olympic stage. These achievements have brought renewed attention to skating sports across the country, which makes it especially disappointing that fans in Kazakhstan are unable to legally watch major international ISU competitions.

The success of Kazakh athletes on the Olympic stage has the potential to inspire an entirely new generation of figure skating and speed skating fans in our country. Ensuring that those fans can actually follow international competitions through official channels would seem especially important at this moment.

I would therefore kindly ask ISU to review the broadcasting arrangements for Kazakhstan and clarify how viewers in Kazakhstan are expected to access ISU competitions.

If Okko is unable to provide ISU sports broadcasts in Kazakhstan, I would greatly appreciate it if ISU could consider removing the geo-restriction on its official YouTube streams for Kazakhstan, so that viewers here can once again watch the competitions legally.

Figure skating and speed skating have dedicated and growing audiences in Kazakhstan, and it is extremely disappointing to be prevented from watching ISU events despite being willing to use an official service and, if
necessary, pay for access.

I hope this territorial rights issue can be reviewed and resolved.

Thank you for your attention. I would appreciate any clarification you can provide.”

Video collab with ARGYMAQ

New video featuring Misha shared by the Kazakhstan clothing brand ARGYMAQ. Translations created and shared by _Di_Tao_ on X (big thank you’s as always!)

Him talking about how much he loved the shirt with the children’s designs on it and how he pretty much never took it off…like yes Misha, WE KNOW 😂 King of having only one outfit ❤️

Favorite Moulin Rouge! program?

Since many of us are likely following along with The Runthrough podcast’s “Lore Horse” series, I thought it would be fun to make a discussion post for each piece of music covered.

Who has skated the most iconic, creative, and memorable renditions of these overused songs? Let’s see what the users of r/figureskating put in their war horse hall of fame.

Appreciation post for that thing Misha does on jump exits sometimes

Is this too niche or something others have noticed??? Anyway I love when he exits a jump with that little neck roll move he does idk what to call it even. It’s just very fluid and cool and honestly probably one of the first things that stood out and made me like his skating.

4T spamming at Peak Ice gala warmup

Video shared by Di Tao on X, footage originally by gwen16_t3 on Instagram.

Also does it sound like the announcer is counting “3” and then “4” in English? Like Misha just went out and did four quad toes in a row???

Prior use of Misha's free skate music by Bradie Tennell (2019-20 SP choreo by B E N O I T)

Out of curiosity because I've seen several people mention it, I found Bradie Tennell's 2020-2019 short program that is also set to "Mechanisms" and "Chronos" by Kirill Richter. And interestingly enough, Benoit also choreographed this program.

The figure skating wiki says that Boyang Jin as well as Shevchenko/Eremenko have previously skated to "Mechanisms", but I do believe Bradie is the only skater to use "Chronos"/a combination of the two.

Not to be mean here but...I really do not like this program. I feel like her costume/facial expressions/interpretation feel completely disconnected from the music and like the wrong track is playing for everything she's doing. The choreo has some similarities to what we've seen of Misha's program so far, for example the lunges and big sweeping body movements.

Anyway it's just interesting to me that Benoit is choreographing another program with a mix of the same songs, although they seem like VERY different programs. Maybe it's music that he's a big fan of and suggests to the skaters he works with? Or maybe it's something Misha found and liked and it's a total coincidence?

ETA here's a link to the same program at 2020 4CC because the video I linked might be blocked if you're not in the U.S.

Free skate costume ideas

Just for fun, and to free my mind from having to picture that horrible smock Benoit subjected his skaters to, I compiled some inspiration for the types of costumes I could imagine for Misha’s new free skate.

(Btw the mix is three pieces of music from Kirill Richter’s album CHRONOS. The pieces are “Michigan 7” “Mechanisms” and “Chronos” in that order)

I’m super interested to know what the story/theme/concept is that they’re going for here. My initial impressions after watching the peak ice gala footage quite a few times today is that it makes me think of dreams, the unconscious mind, mirrors, fluid things like smoke and water, time, and other phenomena beyond our grasp of understanding or control.

Anyway here are some costume inspiration pics that I could see being a good fit for this program and that I would love to see Misha in. I think a sophisticated program deserves a sophisticated costume and so my mind went to things that were simple, subtle, and elegant. Another option could be something more avant garde as well to match the choreo, but I think it would pair best with something that isn’t too distracting. The music and his skating brought to mind deep, cool tones, black and white, or dark with a pop of technicolor. I’m sure he already has a costume in the works so this is all just for fun in the meantime.

I’m so glad we finally got a better reveal of what at least one of his programs is gonna be!

(also pls share if you have any fun costume ideas or inspo pics!)

Funny interview moments with Misha

All credit goes to Di Tao on X. They created this edit, I’m just sharing here for others to enjoy.

I’m not sure how many non-Russian speaking fans watched all two hours of his bombshell interview earlier this summer, it was a struggle with auto-captions only, so it’s awesome that someone created this cute highlight reel!

I love the way he laughs through so much of his interviews, even ones like this with serious moments.

Gorgeous 4F footage

Ugh his technique is sooooo chef’s kiss. The slight inside edge, easy tap into the ice with his free leg, super efficient and fast rotational position 😍

Also shoutout to Misha’s five o’clock shadow lol it’s cute

Costume comparison: Mikhail Shaidorov’s Diva Dance and Shizuka Arakawa’s Turandot

A fun coincidence I noticed when listening to The Runthrough podcast’s latest episode on Turandot programs. They talk about Shizuka’s costume, which led me to look it up, and it immediately reminded me of the similar colors in Misha’s costume.

Does anyone else see the similarity? I just think it’s cool that two dark horse champions won their Olympics in a similar color scheme.

(if only Misha’s mesh matched his skin as well as Shizuka’s 😭)

Misha’s “favorite” jump

I think this video response deserves its own post because of his dedication to trolling us and because I’m sure some of you guys are gonna wanna discuss Misha’s 4Lo 😂
