Thoughts of surly extra terrestrials?

Title, want to pick up a puncture resistant tire for my primos dame, currently I have continental terra hard pack 650b x50mm tires.

Love the tires, but I got a flat and had to walk 7 miles home, never had that with my trek FX running marathon tires. Never want that to happen again.

Tried going tubeless, but apparently my tires are tubeless ready, but my rim isn't.

Not a ton of options for 650b tires, but I landed on the surly extra terrestrials, how are they for commuting?

Bikepacking, weekend lengths? Specifically los Angeles national forest and Santa Monica mountains.

How are they in the rain? We don't get much here, but I don't want to ride and I'm slipping and eating it.

Sizing questions, right now I have 650b x 50mm will the 650 x47mm work?

These tires will be for bike commuting, errands, weekend rides, and bikepacking, I'm car free and do most by bike.

Tubeless questions

Title I'm pretty much ready to go now with tubeless, and standing over all the things I need, have a couple of questions.

  1. Many videos when installing use direct poor, which looks messy, however I bought tubeless valves and a syringe, could I just install everything and just feed via the syringe sealant that way?

  2. How much sealant do I need? I'm running 650b x 50mm

Any tips?

Can I also use a mini electric air compressor?

Burley travoy, thoughts?

Experimented with a trailer on my fx and now primos, loved the capacity and surprisingly wasn't that bad to haul, but the adapters didn't fit right and after 10-15 mins it would make my rear wheel very loose. Ended up returning it.

I wanted something that didn't require a bunch of work, something to clip in and go, seems like the travoy is the best option.

I'll be using this once every 2 weeks for laundry and groceries for 1 person.

Outside of that what is the travoy capable of? Pictures look alright, what do y'all haul?

Tool and tube storage? + Thoughts on locking bags?

Right now I'm running a PDW medium loot bag and it's great, for my work clothes, lunch, belt, etc. but the tools are just thrown on top. I want something more organized and a specific place for it.

I was thinking at first to run a sling bag, got one from chrome industries and it doesn't fit my admittedly large litelok x1. So then I went to a small half frame bag, but then if I leave it out someone might snoop through it and take my stuff and I don't want to come back having to check whether everything is there.

Any solutions to this issue?

The rain is coming.

Title, I live in LA county and it's cloudy today, doesn't rain often here, but when it does it pours pretty hard. My commute is 6 miles round trip most on a bike path, with no shade/cover.

What should I know about commuting in the rain? Gear you recommend? What about tires? I now run a primos dame, steel frame, how should I go about taking care of that?

New tires or tubeless?

I bought a primos dame as an upgrade from my trek fx after 6 months of commuting, last night I did a 18 mile ride to a job that I might go to.

Everything was great, until riding home I noticed I was bouncing more than usual, thought it was odd, hopped off thinking it was either the seat buckling, or thru axel loosening , turns out I got a flat. Inspected the tire both in the moment and on the stand and didn't see anything. Ended up having to walk 6ish miles home.

Never really thought of getting a flat since on the FX a marathon tires. The bike comes with Continental terra hard pack tires, 650bx 50mm

It says it's puncture resistant, feels very malleable vs the marathon. Should I upgrade my tires or go the tubeless route?

I think it's running tubeless ready tires, if so should I order the sealant?

How is tubeless? Pros and cons? I will be riding this bike almost anywhere.

How to tackle longer distances? 15-20 mile round trip.

Title, an old coworker went on to get another job, and has swung by telling us to apply, he now makes 28 per hour and sits on the forklift all day vs me, where I pull orders and work in the sun for 20 per hour.

I'd go, but my problems are the distance and lack of infrastructure. The round trip is 15-20 miles, and most of it is on a highway. If you're in LA county or want to look it up its, sierra highway.

I just bought a gravel bike, primos dame. Would this be suitable for such a ride 5 days a week?

If not what else should I look into?

This is still all up in the air. Anything else I should know for such a longer commute?

Edit- also, another elephant in the room is there's no public transportation, there's a train, but it's extremely unreliable, no buses at all that go on a hwy. So it looks like it's gonna be 100% cycling

Primos dame drop bar and basket compatibility.

Title, I recently upgraded my fx to a primos dame, assembled it and took it for a test ride, extremely fun. Unfortunately, at first I wanted to run a front rack with a somewhat large basket and tote combo and ditch the rear rack, but the wald 137 (I think anyway, horizontally size is 18in) doesn't fit in between the bars.

Took it to a bike shop and they basically said it was special order and mentioned I'd need monster bars to fit that basket....but on the primos website and other basket shops they show drop bars and they fit fine?

One variable that is left is the bars are turned inward and he said I have the option of straightening them out, so maybe that'll work, but doubt it.

Anyone who has the drop bar dame or similar bars know a solution? I dropped over 200 for the front rack, basket and bag.

Options?

Military surplus gear?

Title, I recently upgraded my bike to a primos dame and getting all the parts installed, the only thing I need is a sleep system and they're very expensive, especially for something I might not like.

What are your thoughts on military surplus gear? Specifically Bivvys?

Down the line I'll upgrade, but for now I want to see if the military surplus stuff if okay? This will be for weekend lengths

Wanting to do my first overnighter. Questions

Title, been wanting to bikepack and tour for a while, finally saved up enough money for a bike. I got a primos Dame, PDW front rack and rivendale shop sack large.

Is that enough for bikepacking? I also run resin 160 mm brake rotors. Is that enough for down hill? I live in LA and a big chunk going back is sierra highway, which is somewhat downhill, in general can such brakes handle that?

How do I look up routes and where I can or can't camp? Specifically los Angeles national forest.

I hear stealth camping is a thing, and it seems there's big portions of the national forest, could I hypothetically hop in the bush somewhere and sleep?

Affordable proteins?

Title I'm 5ft 9in and 220 lbs, I want to be 200 and lean into a bulky strength training like build, as I've been skinny before and it looked odd, I think having a bit more chunk looks better.

For my goals, I'm not looking to be a powerlifter, just reach a certain level to help in my day to day life and maintain that.

One hurdle I've found is calories, and protein. I bike 10miles round trip to and from work, on top of a warehouse job where I walk a lot, and for lifting from what I've read I need quite a bit of protein.

Please don't roast me, but could I just eat a ton of beans? And maybe throw in some cheaper cuts of meat like chicken leg, thigh and turkey? Is it healthy long term to eat that much beans, say 2-4 cups a day on top of chicken legs and thigh skin on?

Place to donate a bike that will give it to someone in need?

I'm officially over 6 months car free with my trek fx1 gen 4. So far I love it and I intend to keep it this way until I get flattened by a car or my knees give out, I'm now scouting for an upgrade that will let me go bikepacking, right now I'm looking at the primos Dame.

Other than that, if and when I upgrade, I don't want two bikes, and I want to give the FX to someone who needs it, just as I did when I got it. Does anyone know where I can go? I don't want to sell it because I know someone will probably buy it and resale it for a higher price.

How do you get used to riding in the road? US or equivalent to our infrastructure.

Title, it's been 6 months commuting and it's going pretty well, except that I've noticed I get a blend of embarrassment, and genuinely afraid I'll get clipped, riding in the road.

I live in LA county and there are a lot of stroads and little to no shoulder. How do I get the confidence to ride along cars and not feel embarrassed/ not ride?

This morning for example I want to go out and get some breakfast, there's a diner I've never seen before and it's new territory for me, getting there isn't too bad as There is a park but getting back home requires riding in the road or at least that's the fastest way

Primos dame, and sizing for online orders.

Title been looking for an upgrade and a friend recommended the primos dame.....looks like exactly what I've been wanting and oddly affordable. Thing is, they look to be direct to consumer.

How should I go about sizing? Let's say the frame fits, how do I make the seat be positioned correctly? I don't want to buy one and it doesn't fit, there warranty for exchanges is essentially don't use it, and we'll exchange it.....but how will I know once I've put it together and road it?

Should I upgrade my trek fx, or upgrade?

Title, I've been now over 6 months car free and love it, now I'm at a crossroads, I want to do weekend length touring around LA and bikepacking, I run 35mm tires and have the option for 40mm max, on my trek fx1 gen 4.

Is this enough for touring and bikepacking? Many in the forums say I should have at least 45mm tires.

I can either go and get a steel touring bike, like the bridge club, straggler, or Kona rove. Or stick with what I have, maybe upgrade the drive train to something that has lower gears for hills, tires to 40mm and alt bars.

Thoughts?
