Wanting a bike that can do a bit of everything. Should I a get gravel or touring bike?

Title, late last year I bought a trek fx 1 gen 4 for getting around here in LA county, this was a last ditch attempt before having to unfortunately finally get a car at the time of 24. Thankfully though it worked out and I now want to upgrade.

I want a bike that I can handle going to and from work, hauling groceries, laundry, along with being able to tour and bikepack.

Right now I'm torn between a gravel bike, and a touring rig.

I like gravel because the bars look cooler tbh, and they can take wider tires, so during the work week or in touring mode I can run slick tires and Friday going into the weekend I can run something more aggressive, and they're lighter, posedion has one that's aluminum with a carbon fork along with the salsa journeyer

But my main concern is the material, while light and fast, can it handle groceries? Hauling laundry? 10-25ish pounds on the front rack? Gravel bikes while they look awesome, only seem to be for just the riding and aren't very utilitarian. But maybe I'm wrong.

And I like Touring rigs, the gearing seems to be more for climbing, the material is usually steel, which is heavier, but durable, can handle a lot more weight, and seem to have more comfortable geometry, but they seem to not be able to take chunkier tires, I've tried riding with my 700x35 and they're not the best. I'm currently looking at the surly bridge club and Kona rove for a touring bike.

Keep in mind, I'm new to all this, if anything I said sounds dumb or doesn't make sense, do keep in mind I'm new. Which should I go for?

Wanting a bike that's more for comfort and climbing, will I get dropped on group rides?

I bought a trek fx1 gen 4 as a car replacement late last year. I'm 25 and have never owned a car mostly living VERY close to home, staying home, and transit, wanting more of a social life and more stuff to do I debated finally getting a car but some recommended a bike first to try out and so far I've really enjoyed it.

Now I'm thinking about upgrading, I want a bike that can do a bit of everything, I'm very minimalist and don't want multiple bikes.

Currently looking to get Surly bridge club, and throw on some alt bars (either Jones h bars or surly moloko), front basket, brooks b17 saddle and have the 1x drive train be more of a climber, as here in the San Fernando valley there's a bit of hills. I want a 30T crankset

Looking for fast weight loss to get back on meds, fast 2 days a week?

Title, I have adhd, and it's unfortunately pretty severe, I'm very forgetful and it's starting to affect my performance at work, I'm in good graces, but it won't last forever.

Im overweight, 5ft 9in and 220lbs and have stage 1 hypertension and they won't prescribe me adderal XR or any stimulant for fear of a heart attack or stroke.

Besides the lifestyle, change advice. Could fasting for 2 days a week lead to weight loss?

Bought a trailer, have questions.

Title bought a trek fx 1 gen 4 6 months ago to try out living cat free and see whether this will work or not here in LA county, if it doesn't, I'll unfortunately settle and just get a car.

Thankfully outside of the heat it's pretty fun, currently bought a somewhat cheap trailer for laundry and groceries. Currently going to use it to clean out my place.

Anything I should know when towing? How much should I load? Is it hard?

Wanting to use hansam dam as a shortcut, anyone know the place?

u/Dumbass9187 — 24 days ago

Cycling and dressing normal.

Been commuting for 6 months now. It's a lot of fun, but the heat is here in LA county, more specifically the valley. Temps are regularly 80-90 majority of the year and 95 to a little over 100 in peak summer.

Currently riding in regular workout shorts, T-shirt and vans, which is fine for work as I clean up, and change.

But what about outside of that? Normally I wear boots, Levi's 512 jeans and a T-shirt, do I have to give that up?

I always see others in normal clothes, but then I see they're in Portland, Minneapolis, and San Francisco where it's colder.

Thoughts? Recommendations on clothes to get? Ditch it entirely?

How to prep for big ride?

Title, I've been using my bike to and from work and things around town, 10 miles round trip for work and maybe 5 round trip for the little things, coffee, bank, etc.

Trying to flush out if I really want to keep doing this by taking on a bigger ride, going to get my jeans patched, round trip from work to that spot is 26 miles.

From my house to the spot is 16 mile round trip.

From my place to there I'm facing 551 ft in elevation and 300 down

From my job it's 699 up 728 down.

Dumb idea? Doable? Take the bike + bus?

Can my bike handle it? I have a trek fx1 gen 4, do I have enough gears?

Can volunteering get me into a job?

I currently work a warehouse job, and it's good, pay could always be better but it's not a depressing warehouse job, and management is very nice. However, I want to do something more vs picking orders. Currently wanting to volunteer and help people, and hopefully make it my job so I can do it all week. Has anyone here volunteered and got in?

Currently looking into non profits like MEND in pacoima and an animal shelter in mission hills.

Best apps for making friends?

I'm turning 25 Monday and I'm having a lot of realizations. One of them is I literally have no friends, partner, etc, due to working graveyard and taking care of family, I'm starting to feel genuinely lonely.

I've asked other subreddits and many of them recommend websites like "meetup" problem is a lot of the people skewer older.

What are more modern websites and apps that can help me make friends? Does anyone else feel genuinely lonely?

What's the best bike for climbing?

Title, I want a bike that will essentially be a car replacement here in LA county. Currently I have a trek fx1 gen 4 and with the highest gear I'm struggling at a 4% grade, God help me if there's anything higher or loaded.

I've also noticed with my riding pattern that I always wanted the smallest cog....and I barely use them. For my next upgrade with will be a surly, what bike has the most gears

Things to do in the morning? Mid shift

I'm turning 25 in a couple days, and realized I don't have friends, partner etc. I work from 11- to whenever we're done, on time for us is 7:40.

I'm trying to go out more, do more things and talk to people vs, being a hermit and doom scrolling.

I'm tired of waiting for the weekend, I'm starting to blink and it's gone. Long term I'll probably get another job, but for now with this economy I have to make due.

What are things to do in the morning? Places to volunteer? I live in San Fernando, my job is in sylmar and commute by bike, so something close by is preferable.

If you insist in the evening what is there that's available in the afternoon after work?

Bike as main mode of transportation, and social life. USA or equivalent only

Title, I'm 6 months into bike commuting and I honestly love it, can do most by bike and it's just a fun way to get around. However there is an elephant in the room, and that is social life, especially dating.

Here In the US or equivalent, cars rain supreme, especially where I live, LA. If you don't have one, regardless of whether it's for fun, getting a workout, or you just don't need a car, automatically you're seen as a bum and a colossal red flag.

I've talked with some of my women friends, and they all tend to agree that they would never date someone without a car, that a man must have those means or else he's seen as kind of a loser/ I would never want to drive a man around.

Maybe I'm a bit too progressive, but I don't see it that way? Man women, and everything else, I see as an individual and don't ascribe roles too, and when it comes to love....I don't care? My partner could work at McDonald's, and drive a rust bucket, I don't care about their job, money in their wallet, etc I date them for themselves, and if it were to become an issue, id bring it up and work together vs dump them.

Am I insane? Delusional? I feel like I'm in the twilight zone talking with some people. I lean both ways, and I get this sentiment.

How has your experience been making friends, and dating?

Right now I'm 6 months into bike commuting and loving it so far. Coworkers and people online say, essentially good luck finding and maintaining friends especially a partner even more so since I'm a guy.

I really love riding, my body is used to it, I ride to and from work, groceries, food, coffee, etc.

I'm already pretty lonely due to taking care of family and my job hours on top of being introverted, but I'm starting to make a change. Has being car free long term hindered making friends and partners?

Is being without a car a turn off?

Title, I'm turning 25 next month, never owned a car nor know how to drive one. I live in LA, the valley specifically. My bike is my main mode of transportation, whether that be to and from work, groceries, bikepacking, laundry, or the little things like grabbing a coffee or dinner.

Thoughts? I haven't dated since HS nor do I have friends due to my work schedule and I'm pretty introverted.

I have coworkers that have chimed in on me being car free, and say you're not gonna get any with a bike, how true is this?

Bought new pads after soaking them in oil, how to reset?

Title, watched a YouTube video and ended up piling the brake pads and disc. Lost pretty much all braking power. Cleaned the disc and it definitely improved, but it still made some noise and wasnt 100%. Pretty sure the pads are compromised, 25 bucks later I have them, lesson learned.

How do I reset them? Mechanical disc brakes on my trek fx 1gen 4.

I know you throw them back in and tighten, but how do I clean to male absolute sure I don't fuck these up

Feel like I'm wasting my time, want to commit to selfless service.

Title, I'm turning the big 25 this year, and I feel like I'm wasting my time. I work at a warehouse job, it's fairly easy and my coworkers are nice. But sometimes I feel like I'm wasting my time and want to do something more.

I've never cared for being very competitive nor accumulating wealth, I'm a very simple person, as long as I have a room, my bike, go out at least once a week and some savings, I'm happy.

I've always wanted to leave and just help people, I've always had that urge of what my old boss would say, "selfless service" which apparently is a requirement in his religion.

Is this a dumb idea? Many have said that I'm naive, too idealistic, need to focus on money, or that I have a broke mindset.

Currently looking at the peace corps. Thoughts? Many will say "join a non profit" but from what I can tell, unfortunately in the USA jobs that help aren't the most profitable, which would be fine, if it wasn't for the fact that I'm having to balance living space, and such, Vs peace corps or a mercy ship where my needs are met via the service.
