Single Woman Moving to the UAE. What Should I Expect?

I’m planning to move from a Western country to the UAE, and I was recently told that around 70% of the UAE’s population is male, while women make up roughly 30%, with many of those women being married.

As a single woman moving there on my own, this information has made me feel quite uneasy. I’m now wondering what I should realistically expect and what I should prepare myself for, particularly when it comes to social life, meeting people, friendships, and generally adjusting to life there.

I’ve been feeling overwhelmed and anxious since I heard this, and I’d really appreciate hearing from other women who have made a similar move or have experience living in the UAE. What should I know or prepare for before making the move?

Thank-you in advance 😊

Edit - I’m not sure why some people are upset with my post. It wasn’t intended to put anyone down or criticize the country. I simply wanted a realistic perspective and helped set reasonable expectations for myself before entering the country.

Rabbit isn't pooping but is eating hay

My rabbit hasn’t been eating hay or drinking water since last night. He did eat his pellets last night.

I’ve been hand-feeding him hay soaked in water to make sure he gets something in his stomach.

His stomach feels soft, almost as if there’s a lot of water in it. Otherwise, he seems normal like he’s flopping, grooming himself and behaving fairly normally.

However, I haven’t seen him poop for at least 5 hours and he still isn’t eating hay or drinking water on his own.

Should I be concerned about GI stasis or a blockage, and should I take him to a vet?

Help me understand the unexpected reaction towards a mother

I am 31 years old.

I have only ever been in a situationship and I have no regrets about not having had a boyfriend. I’m sharing this context because it may help others understand where I’m coming from.

I have always felt genuinely happy when someone shares that they are expecting a child or talks about their children. I usually celebrate those moments with them genuinely.

But today, I noticed something in myself that felt different. A worker on the factory line mentioned to my boss that she was leaving for a regular check-up and my boss started asking about her first child. I quietly stepped away from the conversation because, for some reason, I didn’t want to hear more. I wasn’t smiling and I didn’t say congratulations everyone knew except me.

Afterward, I felt strange about my own reaction. Was I jealous? I don’t think so. I’m usually someone who speaks kindly to everyone, even when they don’t show the same warmth toward me. I felt like I should have congratulated her genuinely, but in that moment, I didn't & I don't know why.

I don’t know if my boss noticed my reaction, but I noticed it myself. It affected me more than I expected.

I came home and started writing this while crying because I’m trying to understand what I felt.

Deep down, I think I also want to experience motherhood. I want to have a child someday but it isn't in my hand. I want to enjoy other people's joy of being a mother, I don't want to be sad because I don't have my own. How can I do this ?

Lesson learned from your layoff experience

I have been laid off 3 times before hitting 30.

The first time was the hardest! It took one year to get back to my field. I was totally lost & ashamed & blamed myself & called myself a failure.

Second & third job I bounced back emotionally at a faster rate.

Lesson learned

  1. I can quickly distinguish between a good and a bad manager.

  2. I can identify a company's work culture early on.

  3. Every job, even the ones I didn't choose to leave, has helped me learn new software, industries, new team culture and ways of working.

  4. I leave work at work.

  5. I escalate issues when needed and seek mentorship from decision-makers rather than trying to win colleagues over. I ask for support instead of trying to handle everything myself. I openly communicate any issues with team members to my manager so they're aware, rather than trying to resolve everything on my own.

  6. I set clear expectations and ask questions without hesitation to everyone. I don't waste time trying to decipher vague instructions. From day one, I schedule regular check-ins and request a weekly 1:1 with my manager, making it clear that consistent communication and feedback are a priority for me.

  7. I take pride in delivering my best work and find satisfaction in my own contributions to a project, but I don't become emotionally attached to my job. I'm grateful for the opportunities and benefits a company provides but I don't mistake workplace kindness for a sense of belonging.

  8. Climbing the corporate ladder isn't my goal. I plan my life in five-year horizons and my career is meant to support my personal goals not the other way around. I do my best & the universe needs to play it's part.

Biggest challenge:

Multiple short-term roles and employment gaps make my CV harder to explain even though I have solid references. I miss out on opportunities because of this.

Confused

Hello All

I recently developed an interest in fragrances but a comment from a friend has left me feeling confused.

I had posted in this group before and got some helpful suggestions on where to start. So, I spent a few hours visiting different stores and trying a variety of fragrances.

Few perfumes I absolutely loved had notes of hibiscus, hazelnut and an aquatic accord. I also really liked the Prada fragrance. While exploring, I realized I'm naturally drawn to gourmand fragrances as well. I even bought the Butter Me Up body mist from The Body Shop because I genuinely loved how it smelled.

The problem is that my friend told me I should wear fragrances that make me "smell like a woman." According to my friend, scents with hibiscus and hazelnut might smell nice to me but won't be appealing to other people. They also said the Prada fragrance was more appropriate and that buying the Butter Me Up mist was "poor taste."

Now I'm second-guessing myself. Should I be choosing fragrances based on what others expect a woman to smell like or is it okay to experiment with gourmand and sweeter scents if that's what I enjoy?

I'd love to hear your thoughts, especially from people who have been into fragrances for a while. I want to smell good and want to express myself through the fragrance & don't want to impress others through fragrance.

Voter ID

Hello

I want to apply for a Voter ID but I currently live in another country and have never applied for one before.

While filling out the online Form 6A, it's asking for an Indian mobile number, but I don't have one. How can I proceed in this situation?

Also, are there any YouTube channels or videos that explain the application process for overseas applicants?

I've heard that having a Voter ID is compulsory as proof of Indian citizenship, so I'm a bit worried.

Can someone walk me through the process.

New to fragrance - Where to begin

I’m looking to get into the world of fragrances. Up until now, I’ve mostly worn perfumes that were gifted to me, except for a Valentino fragrance that was recommended by a friend. I’ve received a lot of compliments on it, which has made me more interested in exploring fragrances for myself.

I’d like to discover what scents truly suit my personality and preferences. Since I’m still in the experimentation phase, I don’t want to spend a fortune right away. I’m open-minded and enjoy trying new things, but I also like to keep things authentic to who I am.

At the moment, I’m particularly interested in exploring coffee-based and sandalwood fragrances. I’d also appreciate any tips on how to discover and evaluate different perfumes without overspending, as well as recommendations for beginner-friendly options in those scent categories.

Thanks!

Skincare & Makeup Query

Hello

I'll be moving from Canada to Dubai soon and wanted to do some research before I arrive.

Does anyone know if I can purchase Haus Labs and Skinfix products in Dubai, either through Sephora or other websites that sell authentic skincare and makeup products? If these brands aren't easily available, are there any similar alternatives you would recommend?

I have very dry skin, so I'm trying to prepare in advance and have a few options lined up before the move.

Also, are there any Reddit communities, Facebook groups or online forums dedicated to skincare and makeup in Dubai/UAE that you'd recommend joining?

Thanks in advance for any advice! 😊

Suggestion for lip sunscreen

Hello

I’m planning to start using sunscreen on my lips, but there’s so much information available that I’m finding it difficult to choose the right product.

I commute to work daily and spend about 3–4 hours traveling in the car, so I’d like something I can easily apply during my commute. My lips tend to be quite dry and chapped and I wear lipstick on most days.

I’m looking for a lip sunscreen that is effective, reasonably priced and made with clean ingredients which is very important.

I’d appreciate any recommendations. Thanks in advance!

Toll 407 express

Hello

I commute to work every day from Kitchener to Vaughan and am trying to figure out the best route. Today, I took Highway 407 ETR, but I'm not sure how much the trip will cost me in tolls.

I'm also considering moving to Toronto to reduce my commute and the winter drive. I'd appreciate your thoughts on whether that would be a good idea, considering commute time and costs.

Makeup Remover recommendation

A little background on my makeup-removal journey:

  1. I started with the traditional double-cleansing routine.

  2. Later, I switched to using Aveeno body wash on my face and surprisingly, my skin was perfectly happy with it.

  3. Now that I’ve started wearing eyeliner daily, I’m looking for a good makeup remover especially one that’s gentle around the eyes.

Skin Type

- Dry during the winter.

- Slightly dry in the T-zone during the summer.

Budget

- I’d prefer something affordable and budget-friendly.

- Since I’ll be using it around my eyes regularly, I’d also like it to be a gentle, clean product.

I’d love to hear your recommendations and experiences.

Trying Korean sunscreen for the first time

My skin is very dry in the winter and my T-zone tends to stay a little on the drier side rest of year. I used to use La Roche Posay sunscreen but wanted to try something different.

I bought these three sunscreens to test out this summer. I'll be wearing makeup about five days a week, so I'd love to hear any recommendations or tips for using them, particularly under makeup.

Edit - The picture of Skin 1004 centella is the wrong package. I actually have Skin 1004 centella air-fit suncream plus SPF 50.

Proud Mom Moment

Today marks exactly two months since I brought my little boy home and my heart is so full thinking about how far he's come🐰❤️

In just two months, he's been through so much. I had to leave him with a friend for two weeks while I was away on vacation, then he got through his neuter surgery and recovery, received his vaccination shot and learned that car rides aren't so scary after all. The little bunny who once got anxious during a 15 minute car ride now is in relaxation mode even on a two-hour non stop journey.

One of my favorite things is watching him explore new places when we visit friends. Instead of being afraid of the unfamiliar, he's curious, adventurous, adaptive and eager to see what's around the next corner. Seeing him donning the Vasco da Gama hat makes me happy.

We still have a long journey ahead of us, but these past two months have been a whirlwind. Life has had plenty of surprising ups and downs for me and through it all, he has had to adapt to so many changes too. Yet somehow, he continues to surprise me with his resilience, his courage and his sweet little personality.

My brave boy has made me a proud mom🐇🤱
