Retro Vanity makeover!

Retro Vanity makeover!

I got this vanity from British Heart Foundation the other week and have been slowly trying to paint it! It was very farmhouse style before, greys and browns.

I'm super happy with the progress so far, I want a cutesy, retro, 70s type vibe but almost dollhouse?

Any advice on what to add, how to decorate, how to make more "vanity" esc, I.e. mirror on top, plants, I'm open to suggestion!

Also a quick one, I already have a big ol' mirror wardrobe in my room so I don't want anything too crazy mirrors wise!

Thanks!

Bought my first apartment - service charge isn't covering hidden costs?

Hello!

I hope this is the right reddit I'm on but just looking for any sort of advice! I really appreciate the help nonetheless.

I've recently moved into my own apartment and it's been fantastic! I've done everything I can to make sure all my finances are in order, making sure I've budgeted for my mortgage payment, my service charge, and any insurance + bills.

My service charge is approx. £115 per month with a peppercorn ground rent of £1, always good news on my end, however, one of my neighbours has been explaining to me some of the payments required for things within the building.

I'll do my best to explain this but it's a bit of a confusing one!

The building (and next door) used to be owned by a couple of people, one of whom lives in the building currently. Now, it is run by a management company.

I would've thought that any concerns I.e. roof problems, bin problems, fire checks, etc, would be covered by the management company as that's what we pay our service charge for! However, I'm being told that the roof will need fixing in a few years and will cost approx. 30.000.

We're expected to split our payments evenly, I feel like I've started living in a HOA and trying not to stress! The heat pump in my apartment has also gone so this is an extra 1000 I need to fork out on my own let alone any other payments!

I'm a bit concerned I've put myself in a difficult situation. Am I legally obligated to pay for these extra charges if I'm already paying a service charge? I thought I would just be sorting my apartment and not covering things within the building too?

Thanks! Any help is appreciated. I apologise if this seems confusing because believe me, I barely know what's going on either!

Maximalist Sofas - Where To Find Them!

Hello! I hope this post is allowed! Please let me know if not!

I've just bought my own apartment and super excited to get a good lick of paint and some funky furniture in there! I know a lot of people find super cool furniture on Facebook marketplace and car boot sales, etc, but maybe its just my area that we never seem to have anything fun going for us!

Any suggestions on websites that sell more maximalist sofas/couches and if anyone has any recommendations/experience! I've checked out quite a few websites now but they all seem a bit scammy. I look on places like Sofology and they're cool but end up being a bit too modern for my liking!

I absolutely adore a big ol' sofa, the bubble/round type ones and bright colours like sky blue, lime green, sunflower yellow and baby pink. I know a lot of sofas can be brightened up with blankets and pillows but want a good statement piece for the house!

Thanks guys!

HELP! How to make this maximalist & fun!

Hello! I've attached images of an abandoned sign I found and I would love, love, love to do something fun with it! I've attached some reference images also to the kind of vibe I'm looking to match but really don't know what to paint on this or maybe to use some air dry clay and make it look super funky! I'd love some ideas!

I've popped in multiple pictures of the sign and my hand against it as reference for size! The reference images are just a kind of vibe ref :)

Thank you!

NOTE: I promise this sign hasn't just been pinched! This company went out of business a while ago and I found their sign tucked by a bin so presuming they wanted rid!

How to use storage heaters and an immersion heater?

Figured I'd try and kill two birds with one stone here!

I'm moving into my new property at the end of this month, the property has multiple storage heaters and one large immersion heater in the cupboard.

From what I've seen, these guys can be temperamental and I think im going to struggle using them but I've accepted that and just want some advice!

Can someone please explain using these to me like I'm 5? When do I turn them on? How long should they be on for? What can I do to save money? What are the absolute do's and don'ts? Is it worth trying to replace these or just coping?

Thanks so much for the help!

Is leasehold REALLY that bad?

Hello!

To put in some background, I'm 23, buying my first apartment at the end of this month, hopefully exchanging contracts this week!

I'm curious about all of these posts about avoiding leasehold and how it isn't worth it in the long run.

My apartment has a peppercorn ground rent and the service charge is approx 1.4k for the year. Does this sound like it's too good to be true? I'm concerned my service charge is going to shoot up and I won't be able to afford it.

All in with my mortgage payments, I'm still paying less than I would be for a rental and I intend to live here for as long as I can but I'm starting to get worried as I'm so close to finishing the process but already too far in to pull out!

Am I overreacting or is leasehold really that bad?

Forcing myself to be better but it feels like it isn't working?

Hello! I'd like to put in a tiny bit of background to help with some advice I'm looking for.

I'm 24, have been in relationships almost consistently since I was 16, leaving my current partner to finally live the single life and enjoy my own company. I'm buying my own apartment at the end of this month too!

Despite doing this to better myself, I feel so burnt out, tired and just unloved in my own body. I've put on weight so that kinda sucks, I'm trying to get into the mindset to join a gym but that sucks too, I'm consistently dissociating and never finding time to just relax and love my own body and be patient with myself.

I'm on antidepressants, I had them upped a few months ago (100mg sertraline) and planning to come off my contraception (implant) in the hopes my mood will improve.

Is this normal? What can I do to benefit myself? What helped you guys? I force myself to participate in hobbies, get out and about and read books, spending time with friends but I feel so empty and unfulfilled despite this?

Any advice is appreciated! Thank you so much for reading!

Solicitor's Final Report - What Do I Ask?

Hey everyone! I'm currently in the process of purchasing an apartment and recently got my final report back from my solicitors after almost two months!

I'm looking to clarify any necessary details with them but curious if there's anything that you guys had wish you had asked your solicitors about before purchasing your property!

Any advice is appreciated! Thanks!

Concert Etiquette - Vent Post/AITA?

Maybe I'm totally in the wrong here but was having such a good time at Doja Cat in Manchester last night and had this group of 3 guys continuously bump into me and my partner!

We moved away from them multiple times only for them to follow us and get right up behind us? Not sure if this was on purpose or genuinely just coincidence. My partner politely asked them to watch out after they stepped on him for a fourth time and they claimed it wasn't them.

One of them proceeded to shove past us and it really threw me off to the point I had step out for a moment and miss a few songs. I think I was also partially overwhelmed by the noise and should've brought earplugs!

Anyone else had similar experiences? Are we assholes for asking them to watch out/step off? Still went back in and had such a great time but really sucked and kinda ruined the vibe :(

EDIT: Thank you so much for all the responses! Glad to know it's not just me but will probs do seating in the future so I can still have a little boogie and a dance in my own space!

Can I get away with leaving my rental with one month's notice? - England

Hello! Please be kind as I'm very unsure about all of this and open to suggestions!

I've been living in my rental since Aug 2023, looking to move out as I'm buying my own property.

My landlord/rental agency have always been really sucky, never sorting out things in the house I.e. black mold, legionella in taps, entering without permission. I understand with renter's rights I need to give two months notice, can I get away with giving just one?

Im not intending to get much if any of my deposit back as I think they'll try and rip every penny out of me anyway no matter how much I've fixed the place up!

Can I give one month notice and they can keep my security deposit?

Thanks for the advice!
