Can film be reviewed objectively or can it only be reviewed subjectively?

This is one I have been debating with myself for a while.

I take more value in a single reviewer talks about plot holes or inconsistencies, but at the same time talks about interesting trivia, filmmaking techniques, authenticity etc. I take more value in that than that same reviewer just talking about their feelings and not saying anything of substance. I take umbrage if a reviewer dismisses something I like as 'boring' or that they 'didn't care' but don't say why.

But at the same time, I like seeing debate on platforms like Sardonicast. When Adum or Alex reach one conclusion and Jake reaches another and they both come at it from different angles, it is fun to watch, such as the Emilia Perez episode. That felt very professionally done, instead of one dismissing the film as boring and not progressing.

So, surely there's a way of doing both?

Genesis 19:30-38. The Most Racist Bible Passage?

Lot's daughters are done really dirty in The Bible and end up getting vilified for no reason. (Let's not discuss him offering them up to rapists so that he could protect their guests. Wtf.)

After the destruction of Sodom & Gomorrah, they get their dad drunk and sleep with him, siring two sons from the incest. Those two children were Moab and Ben-Ammi; who became the fathers of the Ammonites and Moabites respectively.

So, incest and rape. Ew. This passage is certainly in the running for most disgusting / most vomit inducing Bible passage.

But my main point, claiming that two rival Semitic tribes, ones that fought the Israelites repeatedly, are the result of rape and incest? That's about as racist as it gets, surely?

If I were to claim that inhabitants of <insert country here> were sired from rape and incest or had ancestors who engaged in rape and incest and had children via that, then surely I would get some sort of backlash? Many of us have racist uncles and I'm certain that none of them would be so cowardly to take that route? (I'm terrified about what answers I get to that.)

BONUS: Jewish tradition has it that they thought they were the only people on Earth after the destruction. Therefore nobody else could give them children. Wtf.

When you realise that there's no guarantee that the religion you dedicated your life to is true and every possibility that it's false:

Pretty much me when I first deconstructed. I can't believe it took me until I was in my twenties honestly.

Batman in Runcorn

An update on the post from yesterday.

They have just wrapped up filming. We have an ambulance, what looks like Batman on top of the bridge, a helicopter, a Batmobile, a Sanitation Truck and a Guy on a Motorcycle.

The Pairs of Glasses Task. Were there any tricks or work arounds?

Because it seems to me that the only way to efficiently win the task was to magically know how big the glasses were, magically know which box they'd fit in and put them in. And since you can't change your mind or go back for a second box, you're stuck if you pick one too small.

I wish the task was phrased in a way that implied you could go back for a second box, but didn't outright say it. (E.g. "Box up the Pairs of Glasses in the Lab. You must select a box before leaving the caravan and that box must be used to contain pairs of glasses. The smallest box containing pairs of glasses wins.")

How do you know that they won't follow through on their threats?

What if they send one photo to one of your family members or Instagram followers, then demand payment from you so that they won't send them to more?

I'm not saying that this happened to me. But given what gangsters do in movies with hostages, like sending a severed toe, how do you know that sextorters won't think to do that?

What's your opinion of the argument "It's not made for you" or "It's for kids" or words to that extent?

I am very much against this line of thinking.

Don't get me wrong. I know that films, TV shows etc are made with demographics in mind and that the studio / creator behind them is going to tailor it to that demographic.

However, I think it's foolish to act like other people should be excluded from the fun. Why limit your audience like that?

I had a chat with someone last year where I had a bunch of criticisms of the Harry Potter books. He just handwaved it saying, "It's for kids though". I tried explaining to him that adults like them too and that children deserve the best quality material.

I see it in all sorts of places. "Star Wars is a movie about space wizards for children! Stop complaining!" Or, "Ghostbusters (2016) wasn't made for you! It was made for children! It's time to let the children play!"

For Films that already won Best Supporting Actress, what was their Best Supporting Female Performance that was NOT nominated?

This is the follow up to a post I did two weeks ago for the corresponding male category.

DISCLAIMER: Please read the title before you comment, last time there were people who thought Aaron Taylor-Johnson in Nocturnal Animals, Daniel Kaluuya in Widows etc. counted even though those films never won Best Supporting Actor. Rules apply here for Best Supporting Actress.

My Choices:

Ekaterina Chtchelkanova (Chicago) - Loved Catherine Zeta-Jones. But this performance tore my heart in two. Very sad for her.

Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor (If Beale Street Could Talk) - the conviction she gives the overly religious mother complemented the cast. Worthy of consideration alongside Regina King.

Rita Moreno (West Side Story (2021)) - What is it with her always being good in West Side Story? How does Anita always generate a winning performance in this category? I loved Rita's singing and the support she gives Anton. She was snubbed.

Double Standards with The Ten Commandments in The Bible

All of them are set in stone... unless God tells you to break them or exalt him above other gods.

Commandments 1 - 4 provide unfair favouritism to the Judeo-Christian God. But other gods? Fuck them. Judeo-Christian God deserves all the glory for... existing I guess? Even though the evidence for him is about as scarce as Baal or Dagon. You are compelled to not worship them, take time off for them and use their name in vain. But Judeo-Christian God? He's special.

5. “Honour your father and your mother." No commandments for honouring children? What if your mother and father ask you to worship a foreign idol? Do you still honour them then?

6. "You shall not murder." Unless they worshipped a golden calf one time or they are on land that I want you to conquer.

7. "You shall not commit adultery." I'm sure the married men who pillaged towns in The Promised Land remembered that when they were allowed to make off with the girls who hadn't slept with any man./s

8. "You shall not steal." Unless it's The Promised Land, the contents of The Promised Land, or a person in The Promised Land.

9. “You shall not give false testimony against your neighbour." I'm sure this was consistently upheld against people from non-Israelite groups./s (I might do a later post on this, but I am convinced that Genesis 19:30 - 38 was racist fiction against the Moabites and Ammonites. It certainly reads like that.)

Btw, wasn't there a prophet (Elijah, Elisha or Ezekiel) who made a prophecy for God that ended up not coming to pass, but he was still rewarded?

10. "You shall not covet your neighbour's..." Unless it's The Promised Land, the milk and honey in The Promised Land, the slaves and young girls in The Promised Land etc.

Every Christopher Nolan Film as portrayed by Taskmaster

Since The Odyssey comes out tomorrow and I get an obsessive joy out of these.

That hair does make Maisie Adam look a lot like Guy Pearce in Memento.

u/Edgy_Master — 1 month ago

How would you rank every Christopher Nolan film? (Pre-Odyssey)

It comes out tomorrow!

How I would rank and score them out of 10:

  1. Inception (10/10)

  2. Oppenheimer (10/10)

  3. Memento (9.5/10)

  4. The Prestige (9.5/10)

  5. The Dark Knight (9/10)

  6. Insomnia (9/10)

  7. Interstellar (8/10)

  8. Batman Begins (8/10)

  9. Dunkirk (8/10)

  10. Following (6.5/10)

  11. Tenet (6/10)

  12. The Dark Knight Rises (6/10)

I can confidently say that I don't hate any of his films. At worst, I think, "Oh, that could have been better." At best, my mind is completely blown and I'm left wanting more.

I hope I don't get backlash for only putting The Dark Knight in fifth place and just giving it a 9/10.

I greatly anticipate The Odyssey and I intend to watch it in the next week. Hopefully the weekend if there is a space for me lol.

Were there two Apocalypse's existing at the same time in the original X-Men: The Animated Series?

I have not watched the new season of X-Men '97 so no spoilers please.

It has been a long time since I watched the OG show. But I remember that there was an Apocalypse in the present and an Apocalypse in the future.

The Apocalypse in the present got banished into space at the end of the Season 3 episode 'Obsession' (even yelling "I WILL RETURN!").

The Apocalypse of the future gets caught up in the time travel plot of the 'Beyond Good and Evil' Saga. In the end he gets locked on the Astral Plane. He comes back in 'The Fifth Horseman' and possesses Fabian Cortez's body.

So does that mean two versions of the same character exist at the same time? What would happen if they were to both meet?

Funniest Superman moments? From the Comics, Cartoons, Movies, TV shows.

Try to focus on Superman the character if you can. But if you have funny moments from his supporting cast, I'd love to hear them.

How would you have changed Apocalypse in X-Men: Apocalypse?

This post is just about the portrayal of this one character. The film overall was a bit of a letdown but that's not what I want to focus on.

As a villain, Apocalypse left alot to be desired. He was not very physically imposing (I think he was shorter than some of the other characters lol) and the blue prosthetics were just cringe. I like Oscar Isaac but, that voice is just not how I'd imagine Apocalypse after reading the comics. Suitable for another role, just not this one.

Also, he lacked alot of the superpowers that made him compelling to me. The shapeshifting, the ability to grow to gigantic sizes etc. The trailer promised some of the latter but that ended up just being bait.

The scheme to get him to posess the world's most powerful telepath is actually not bad. They were fine keeping that. I wish the film did a compare / contrast with Magneto since his (Apocalypse's) are probably more extreme than Erik's.

How would I change him?

  1. Cast an actor who is 6ft or 7ft. I'm talking The Rock or John Cena. If not them, then another charismatic wrestler.

  2. Make him grey / pale. Not blue. He doesn't have to look like a raisin.

  3. Give him more his more creative superpowers. I want to see him grow claws and lasers for hands. Make him actually grow to giant size. He was overpowered in the comics, but at least his powers were memorable. Not like this guy.

  4. Maybe have this film set in the 1980s be the one that gives Erik the idea to kill / subjugate humans in the 2000s. If the prequel plan was better, you could have it that young Erik just wanted mutants to live separately to the oppressive humans. But then Apocalypse grooms / influences him into thinking that peacefully separating from humans (like on Genosha or Asteroid M) doesn't work, you need to destroy them.

Any other changes?

Many Interesting Quirks About the 2004 Presidential Election

The last election to have the Republican (George W. Bush) win a majority of the popular vote.

The last election to have states that flipped both ways (New Hampshire went Blue after being Red in 2000; Iowa and New Mexico went Red after both being Blue in 2000).

The last election where Michigan, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin did not go to the winner (John Kerry).

The ONLY election where none of the nine states in the North East went to the winner.

The last election where the winner won less than 300 Electoral College Votes and the last where the winner was re-elected with less than 300 Electoral College Votes.

The last election where Virginia, Colorado and New Mexico were Red.

The last Presidential Election where the Presidential and Vice Presidential nominees of a major party had the same first name (John Kerry and John Edwards).

The last Presidential Election to have a faithless elector (one in Minnesota) vote for the Vice Presidential nominee on the ticket. They also spelt his name wrong ('John Ewards').

Is it possible for a film with good writing but terrible directing and/or acting?

When I see bad movie reviews it's always from the perspective of the writing being bad, with very little commentary on the actual filmmaking.

Surely it's happened before where a great script is passed on to a studio and director who have literally no idea what they are doing?

For Films that already won Best Supporting Actor, what was their Best Supporting Male Performance that was NOT nominated?

Something I was thinking about today and I might do one for Best Supporting Actress later.

My Selection

Stephen Boyd (Ben-Hur; won Best Supporting Actor - Hugh Griffith) - This should have both been nominated and won. He won the Golden Globe for crying out loud. I don't fully understand why Hugh Griffith was more worthy when Boyd had the larger intensity and screen presence. Messala was a perfect villain.

Aaron Eckhart (The Dark Knight; won Best Supporting Actor - Heath Ledger) - Eckhart was worthy of some form of commendation. Watching Harvey Dent's downfall is always tragic and he brought it to life effortlessly. He goes from calm and collected to shit your pants scary at points.

Eugenio Derbez (CODA; won Best Supporting Actor - Troy Kotsur) - Probably my favourite performance in the film. He was incredibly convincing as this strict but ultimately compassionate teacher and he added something to Ruby's success at the end.

Can you provide a TLDR of each of Franklin Roosevelt's four terms? What was the best year / term for him? Likewise what was the worst?

Just one of those thoughts I had before going to bed. He delivered massive transformative change during his twelve years in the White House and more or less brought peace on Earth.

I know that each of his terms had different tones compared to the other two or three.

One thing I'm curious about is how much The Conservative Coalition from the 1938 midterms hindered his Presidency.

Question for the Doctors and Physiotherapists. Can Someone Realistically Recover From This?

I mean, a broken spine is impossible to heal. Is it possible that Bane damaged a different part of Bruce's back that would incapicate him for a few months but still damage him so that he needs longer to recover?
