Running a software company has taught me something I didn’t expect

When I started a software company, I thought the hardest part would be building great software.
It isn’t.

The hardest part is figuring out what to build, finding the right clients, managing expectations, hiring the right people, keeping projects profitable, and somehow still finding time to think about the future.

As a developer, you can spend weeks solving a technically difficult problem and feel like you’ve accomplished something huge.

As a business owner, sometimes the most important decision is simply saying “we shouldn’t build this.”

I’m curious about other founders here:
What’s one thing about running a software company that you completely underestimated before becoming a founder?

Could be sales, hiring, clients, cash flow, leadership, technical debt, or anything else.

I’d genuinely like to hear the lessons you learned the hard way.

Developers who freelance, how are you actually finding good clients these days?

I’ve been running a small software development team for a while, mainly working on custom web apps, mobile apps, SaaS products, and AI integrations.

Most of our work has come through referrals and freelance platforms, but lately I’ve been trying to figure out better ways to consistently find quality clients without spending all day sending proposals.

For those of you who freelance or run a small dev agency:
Where are you getting your best clients right now?
Cold outreach, Reddit, LinkedIn, Upwork, referrals, something else?

What has actually worked for you rather than just generating leads that go nowhere?

Would be interested to hear what’s working for people in 2026.
