First timer. Made some mistakes.

Hey there,
First time dipper. I sprayed the roof of my car. I ended up getting a run, and then got too close and it blew the dip. Can this be fixed or should I peel and redo? Also, I got some tiger striping. To me it looks like I may have needed to lay it more wet, or tighter passes?

But this looks so much better. Incredible, really. Can’t wait to spray the rest of the car (different color).

Lastly, I couldn’t find naphtha at Home Depot. Lacquer thinner didn’t seem to really break the dip down. What product is comparable to naphtha?

Thanks for the tips. I used 1 quart of base and 1 quart of top coat. I have about 3 quarts of each left.

Tips for spraying a roof?

First time spraying dip. I plan to start with the roof. The clear coat is peeling badly on the roof and the rest of the body, so I pressure washed it and most of the clear came off in chunks. I am going to sand the roof today with my DA, starting with 220 to get through the remaining clear, then 400 on the entire roof, and then finally with 800. The goal is to blend all of the high areas any remove the remaining clear. The exposed base right now has a matte finish. I'm worried the dip would be hard to remove if the surface isn't uniformly smooth, if that makes sense. That's why I plan to sand the entire roof with 800. But should I go 1000?

What are some tips for spraying a horizontal surface? Obviously, the car is pretty small. I have a DYC gun. I had previously ordered a Motor Oil kit for the car but plan to use Motor Oil on the roof only and a second color on the rest of the car.

Lastly, the small Motor Oil kit came with 2 gallons of base and 2 colors of top. How much would I use on a roof, do you think? 1 gallon of each?

Can't wait for the final reveal. :)

Car pulled out while I was merging into a lane. Fantastic avoidance. It was smooth and very quick on the draw. Impressed with 14.3.1!

Thanks for the help with suggestions. I recently finished doing a K20a2 swap in a '67 Austin Mini Cooper. The car had pretty weak paint and I bought a small Motor Oil kit to dip the car. I am familiar with bodywork, having painted my '72 Chevrolet Vega a few years back.

The Cooper is pretty straight but badly peeling clear. What grit do you recommend I sand the car to for preparation of dipping the car? I was thinking 500-600 but will that be too course for removal later? Would it be better to sand to the base with 500 and then follow it up with 1000?

The goal is to dip the entire car (except hood) in Motor Oil but shoot the roof in a white dip. I do have a complete "small" kit for the car and a DYC gun I purchased. The hood is being replaced with a pin-on carbon fiber front end.

Any thoughts or suggestions are welcomed. Thank you.
