Advice you would give a perspective college student

I’m a mom of a junior in high school and my son seems to have a keen interest in architecture.

least, I would think so

I literally know nothing about architecture. In fact, I had a friend who got a bachelors degree in it who went on to get a masters in photography and now he teaches photography at the college level and he has a lot of family money to fall back on.

My son has no idea what he wants to major in, but he has above a 4.0 GPA and he’s very very creative

The past years and his free time he has started up a YouTube channel that is Minecraft based in which he does things like build existing buildings in the world in Minecraft and also Creates his own and it’s a very, very long, detailed YouTube channel where these builds are long and in my opinion, tedious where he goes into a lot of aesthetics and detail

He was very good at Lego Building as a kid and what I mean by that is he could pretty much build anything he could build a Candy dispensing machine or something elaborate and detailed

He went on a field trip in elementary school to our capital and he came home and started building the buildings and Lego and And said he was inspired by the architecture.

there was a block of new homes going up in our neighborhood when he was little and he was utterly fascinated by watching every phase of these houses being built and love checking up on the progress

He also finds math very easy and he just took calculus and said it was easy and he took physics and he does well in that and I don’t know. I guess I just thought architecture popped up in my mind, but I know literally nothing about it.

He’s taking some pre-engineering courses in the high school level and he does very well with the computer designing of car parts or whatever he’s doing with that but doesn’t really think engineering is for him because he just has no clue

I haven’t really suggested architecture to him because if I suggest a major, then he puts it in his head that he wants to do it

I asked him if he wanted to be a teacher thinking he would just say no and I would sort of cross that out and now he thinks maybe he wants to be a teacher, but he’s not a very social kid

I have a feeling like any job. It isn’t just like being Mr. Brady and designing fantastic buildings for interesting people.

I also suppose just because you have an interest in something doesn’t mean you want to make a career out of it

For instance, I like the outdoors and camping, but I don’t want to work at a campground or lead hikes and I enjoy the French language, but I don’t want to teach French to other people.

Lol

Biggest thrill you had

Had an awesome visit to Cedar Point last weekend.

I'm a mom and did a lot of rides but no Rollercoasters.

My teen son did roller coasters for the first time. He's quiet but I asked him what the biggest thrill/ scare( in a good way was)

he said he wasn’t scared of any of the ones he went on and he went on a lot of them.

and yes, he did the top thrill 2 but I guess that’s not really a roller coaster.

I said was there any moment where you were like Wow this is kind of intense or a little scary and he said there was a really tall drop from millennium force.

what do you guys think the biggest thrill you had was?

s bent bros chairs

I really like these chairs

Someone on my street was throwing them out so I picked them up after asking.

They seem to be in remarkable shape and I have the idea to put them with a little table in my basement as like a little crafting area

They kind of remind me of something from the early 1980s, but I was wondering if you guys knew what decade these are from I just love how cute they are

Difficulty choosing AP classes with no major decided

my son will be a senior next year and does not know what he wants to major in.

I usually get some kind of negative comments because I’m a parent asking on behalf of my son saying that he needs to let go and let him do everything.

I’m happily married also with a much younger child so I’m just trying to guide him because college is important.

he took AP American history, freshman year and got a four.

he didn’t take any AP sophomore year because we focused on doing advanced math and then he also entered into kind of technology education sort of pre-engineering program that the high school offers.

He really enjoys working in the design software and even wanna state award for some kind of design he did.

his dad does sort of like design engineering work, and he says he doesn’t really see himself being an engineer.

He said he might want to be a history teacher, which I don’t know if he said that because I asked him if he wanted to be a teacher, but when I asked him that it was more like this just check it off the list expecting he would say no.

I would support him and anything he wants to do, but the practicality is he is extremely shy and not a people person and teaching had a high burnout rate.

he’s in his junior year with one more week of school left and he took AP Calc and AP physics, which was calculus based.

we were very conflicted on what classes to sign up for next year so he is I believe taking the next AP physics and I think there was another AP calc that he registered for, but we were not sure if he should take statistics of that because we kept getting different advice from different teachers.

I do understand that some kids take AP classes just for the experience and the rigor.

I feel like his senior year should be spent taking classes that will knock out credits for a potential college degree and I don’t care about the money. It’s just the time.

and he’s also signed up for a two hour section of this engineering stuff which she doesn’t even know if he wants to do.

You basically have about a week and a half to change classes for next year and I really kind of feel lost on how to guide him since he doesn’t know what he wants to major in but I completely do not expect a 17-year-old to know what they want to major in.

he is a straight A student but not highly motivated after school to do extra .he gets by and a lot of natural intelligence. For instance, he did no studying for the SAT.

I have a bachelors degree and I think college will be a big transition because you have to be a self starter and study outside of school a lot

I just think it’s a waste to take extremely high math and physics classes. If you don’t need them for your major and I think it’s a waste to sit in jet classes when you were 17 and 18 for the majority of your day when you could be getting college credit.

Does anybody have any advice or can they share what works for them?

Meal plan is great

i’m currently on my first trip to Cedar point since I was a little kid myself and I’m really liking the daily meal plan.

We got the basic plan and I honestly don’t know how one person could eat a meal every one and a half hours but it’s working out great to share with my husband.

We take turns getting a meal since we like different kinds of food for instance he got the steak and I just finished a large chicken burrito bowl at miss keats but I have to be honest. I only ate about 2/3 of it because it was mega huge. Easily shareable.

My husband has his watch set to a timer so that we can get a meal every hour and a half or so and a great value

Suggest the mildest roller coasters

at cedar point for a couple days.

My older teen is loving the major coasters. I’m so happy for him. I’m not a coaster person. I’m doing other rides.

My 11 year old did the mine ride and Woodstock express.

She’s a little jealous her big brother is getting more thrills. lol

She’s not ready and neither am I for her to do like the major roller coasters, but she’s kind of asking to do the Gemini with her teen brother.

rides are such a personal thing because I literally have a friend here who’s 11-year-old son just rode that top thrill thing which is kind of crazy but he also said he would not do it again and he got pretty scared

Is Gemini the tamest roller coaster outside of mine ride in Woodstock express?

fish keeper and aquascraping

i’ve had a couple fish tanks running for a few months now. I told my teenager to come watch me feed the fish and he noticed a new ornament in the aquarium. He asked me if it was new and I said yes, sometimes fish keepers like to change up and get new things for their tanks.

He chuckled that I called myself a fish keeper and then I said yeah maybe I’m online too much watching reels about taking care of fish and I said by the way, I didn’t just redecorate the aquarium. I Aquascaped it. lol

1360 and zero studying

The few times I have posted about my son who is a junior. I usually get someone who trolls me and is mean saying let him do it all so I’m going to ignore.

I’m happily married with two kids, including an elementary kid so I’m not overly involved in my kids life but when it comes to matters of college, I think it’s not a bad thing to have your parents occasionally guide you if they have the ability as I graduated college myself.

my son got a 1360 on the SAT and claims he did zero studying and I never saw him study and he never talked about it.

I did tell him many times about the merit scholarship and if he wanted to go to more selective colleges it did matter, but I didn’t want him to stress about it because there are flagship schools that he is guaranteed to get into regardless of score. I said it was important to put in some time to study and if you wanted me to pay for classes, I would.

He does school and sports and doesn’t have a job.

i’m using this as reference for his time and he is currently taking two APs but I would estimate he does about one hour studying a month outside of school, but he claims he has loads of time in his non ap classes to do studying.

He’ll be a senior next year and he will be graduating with about five AP’s and a 4.0 ( I’m proud) which I know isn’t extremely rigorous, considering i’ve met kids who do five AP’s at one time.

I asked him if he wanted to retake it in the fall and his response was he didn’t know ,and do I need to go to a college that needs a better score? I told him he needs to research that.

so I got into a conversation about that and kind of

showed him roughly the SAT minimums that some schools require for their more prestigious scholarships.

we live in Michigan and he intends to go in state so it almost seems like he can still get into most schools, except university of Michigan.

I hate the idea of kids being too pressured on scores and I’ve never pressured him, but I just want to congratulate all of you guys who put in a lot of time studying. I really admire the motivation.

I guess I’m just getting people’s thoughts on whether I should convince him to study and retake it in the fall but as you know, I certainly can’t force him to study because that’s his choice.

it looks like that score puts him in the 92nd percentile, which I honestly think is completely amazing and I congratulated him, but it’s just amazing how even that score is not top level for the really elite schools.

I told him that he probably did well because he has an education and he said it had nothing to do with that. It’s just taking a test.

I said you’re taking AP physics and AP calculus and you think that has nothing to do with doing well on sat? he said no because those subjects aren’t on the test and he didn’t do better. He thinks because he didn’t study.. hmmm

I love him to bits and I will always support him, but he also has no clue what he wants to major in and is bouncing back between engineering and being a history teacher, but he says he doesn’t see himself a desk job and he shy. so I told him maybe figure out a major is more important than what school he goes to?

I honestly think I’m more concerned about what APs to pick for next year over his SAT in college because I feel basically senior year. If you are a high achiever should be partially spent knocking out classes for college, but I also don’t think young people should have to be locked into a major when they are 17..

But you can not effectively pick aps with no major in mind.

lol. things were so much easier in the 90s. Let me tell you.

premium dining plan for my visit

I’m coming in and staying four nights next weekend. My teenager has a soccer tournament so we’re adding on a nice trip to Cedar point.

I’m thinking about getting a dining meal plan for the day.

Family of 4 . Parents . Tween and teen. My kids are picky but no allergies. They like snacks

Can you tell me if it’s worth it to upgrade to the all day premium dining plan or at least some more information on that it looks like you can get pop and I’m wondering if they have lemonade because I like that and it says you can get an entrée with the side or a snack and I’m not sure what the snack means. Does that mean I get like a steak and a snack? Do I not get a side with the entrée it obviously seems shareable and you just get one cup for the whole day or can you keep getting a different cup if you lose the cup.

First visit

We’re staying OK at Cedar point express and probably going back to the hotel a couple times so I’m kind of using the meal plan and it’s more like a snack thing for us

favorite food and how often you feed

can you guys share how often you feed your betta and what kind of food you feed them and what do they like the best?

i’m really trying not to overfeed, but I’ve been feeding about two times a day. The problem is the fish just act like they are starving every time they see you and it’s not true.

Betta swimming to one side on top

I bought the spade literally 24 hours ago in a cop from the big box pet store. I tried to pick one that looked active alert with healthy fins.

so it’s less than a day later and she’s floating on her side and only staying to the top and looks like she’s gasping for air or at least taking more gulps than I would expect

this is my second beta as my first one passed away after only a month after having Finn clamping

i’m starting to wonder if it’s truly possible to buy a Betta fish and keep it healthy.

I have the API water test kit and it has tested negative for nitrates and ammonia, but it’s kind of ridiculous because most people don’t even have these things

The aquarium has one real plant, hiding spots, no other inhabitants, a heater, a filter, and a low flow air bubbler

does anyone know what’s going on with this beta?

:(

Is this OK?

I have two aquariums with fake plants and I bought my first real plant.

I had the roots buried and I’ve only had this plant for about three weeks and it’s looking pretty shabby so I pulled it out of the rocks because someone on another forum told me that I need to get the roots out of the rocks which is kind of weird I would think they would need to be in the rocks.

Kid needs contacts?

hi guys, I’m a middle-aged mom with an 11-year-old daughter. I had lasik in my 20s after being about a -2 and my vision is really great as far as I can see. No pun intended.

I was -.25 last exam.

I don’t usually wear my glasses, but if I do, I can see a remarkable difference in my distance. my daughter has a prescription of -1.75 and she never wears her glasses ever. she’s in fifth grade and just gets up from her seat when she can’t see the board and sits on the floor and just accommodate herself. she thinks her glasses don’t look attractive and I can understand that. I understand those feelings.

She’s a wonderful child and very mature in a lot of ways, but she’s very hesitant to put things in her eyes and I’m just looking for advice on whether I should get a contact exam

She gets dirty a lot and likes to play outside and is kind of rough and tumble and now she’s in Soccer and I just don’t know how well her vision is

It worries me because we’ll be shopping and she’s squinting to see the aisles in front of her

Am I in the right to try to recommend contacts and feel that this vision is not good enough to function?

she goes to middle school next year and I don’t know if she’ll be able to just go sit by the board like she can now being in the same class all day long

Toad reflection

this toad very rarely comes out of her terrarium. she has a tank mate but that one is very active . We’ve had her quite a few years, but I was playing on my phone and finished a cup of tea and just got her out so she found the empty cup of tea and decided to stare at her own reflection for about 20 minutes until she got bored. Lol.

I bought a car new in 2012 and I’ve driven it since so obviously I’ve saved a lot of money on car payments

i’m looking to buy something maybe around the two or three year old range and considering buying it in cash do you guys have any advice on how to handle getting a good deal if I do cash? Meaning not financing.

I guess I’ll buy a car from a dealer because I’ve never bought one from a person and I wouldn’t even know how to go about that.
