Calling former GO workers (current too if ya want)

I worked at 3 different GO's over the span of 10 years. My experience was pretty varied:

1st store: My fav, kinda regret leaving. Didn't pay well but everyone was respected.

2nd store: Didn't pay well, and a few special people were respected. Funnily enough, I was one of them but I didn't like how my pals were ostracized.

3rd store: Didn't pay well and screwed over employees on the regular.

I've been out for a few years now and wondered what the culture was like these days. I feel a great amount of nostalgia for the company, mainly due to my first store being so great.

Anyone have horror stories? Success stories?

I love GO gossip LOL I'll share more stories if this picks up!

I don't want to fix my teeth

I went through quite a lot in the past couple years. I don't really trust anything anymore. I have dental issues, need braces & caps, but I keep putting it off. I rationalize it by that I don't need to fix them for myself and anyone else should love me as I am. If I have to change myself for love, I will resent it. Also, messed up teeth give me an excuse to have an RBF and keep people at bay and nobody dives too deep because I am ugly and barely acknowledged as a person.

That said, I am saying that in a factual way and not self-deprecating. I am weirdly comfortable in my grossness and unaligned smile. I feel so messed up internally & if the outside matches, it feels justified. I am still functional in an adulting sense but I don't put any effort into my exterior. If I made myself attractive and found someone based off that, I would grow to hate that person.

Anyone relate?

Snack & craving haul

Went to a new Groc Outlet, $45.82.

Wins: Flag cookies .99, Ore Ida fries .50, eggs .80.

Curiosities: I have always wanted to try TimTams & the Bibigo dumplings are so good but I haven't been able to find them anywhere else lately

Grocery haul $18.68

I went in ready to find some bargains and did not have much luck, so I mainly got favorites.

The candy section was abysmal, was mostly old christmas candy and strange flavors.

The frozen section was half empty and many things were the same price as Raleys.

The pasta and cereal aisle were very full but no good deals.

Wins: The toll house cookies were .33 cents and the drain snake was a buck so if it sucks, I won't be too sad.

I am curious to try the BBQ popcorn chicken.

I applied for 30 state jobs in July, how about you?

I decided to ramp it up and there was also a lot of job postings available, so I submitted 30 apps in July (with SOQ's) maybe another 10 without SOQ's required. Victory! ?

Last month I also had two interviews. One I didn't get and one is still processing.

How's your applying going?

Process of stepping down in hour levels, employee question

I know you can ask to go down in HL levels and it is usually granted, but what if you are in a position that is required to be an HL3 and you ask to become an HL1? Has anyone seen that happen? Would you just move departments?

Voyage of the Damned and the Angels take Manhattan, interesting connection?

I am doing a full rewatch on AMC+ and just finished Voyage of the Damned. The moment where Foon takes the metal angel down into the fire with her, after her husband Morvin had fallen in because she could not live without him... I thought it was incredibly similar to when Amy goes back through the weeping angel to Rory.

The analyst II exam is just another form of an SOQ with references required

It is not an exam in the way the analyst I or office tech roles have an actual exam. It is just asking for a version of an SOQ where you answer 13 questions and have to put every reference you have. My goodness, I am having to do it in short sessions.

Anyone relate or are people just plugging in AI to get by?

Grocery shopping is so depressing now

I just swung by my neighborhood grocery to pick up some snacks and bargains for the week. I walked the entire store, saw so much I would have bought if the price wasn't insane, and I left with 4 things.

I got chewy granola bars (18ct) for $5.99, a 15ct frozen taquitos for $5.99, a frozen burrito for $1.69 (craving), and a 9 oz lunchmeat for $2.99. All prices I can live with.

Some other prices I saw:

My favorite frozen breakfast bowls (jimmy dean) were $6.49. A month ago they were $2.99.

Many many boxes of cereal for $9.00+.

A cantelope for $7.00.

A bag of m&m's for $20, I think it was 38 oz. They used to be $12.99

The whole meat department, I might have to become a vegetarian.

Is everyone just in massive food debt now? I have the luxury of leaving and buying elsewhere but I know so many people don't.

Getting hired in a new department that is hiring everyone from scratch

I finally got a few calls for interviews which is exciting! One of the places though I interviewed for told me they were a new bureau and were hiring 7 new people from scratch. The job is a permanent position but is this at all a red flag?

Is it often that whole new bureaus are created and new teams hired from scratch? I worry because I would be leaving a stable long-term job for this, and what if the new bureau is cut due to budgets?

Can someone in the USA be a job reference, will return the favor.

I will have an interview in a week that is for a government job. Entry level office work, I would just need someone to speak to my past working experience in retail. They want 5 professional references, I think I can scrounge up 3 solid ones. I'm in CA if that matters.

I can definitely return the favor.

I want a partner to play monopoly with

I am so sick of technology and I just want to shut it all off and play monopoly with a partner and have a quiet evening together. Yes I can play with friends, no it's not the same.

Dating sucks, technology sucks. Monopoly is great.

What is the longest time after applying you got a call for an interview?

I tried to apply for state jobs 5 years ago and gave up because I was not getting any interest after a month of applying and I was used to a quick turnaround. I am now trying again and told myself I would consistently apply for a year to really try this time.

Just curious to hear stories about folks who got calls long after applying, maybe even after they gave up trying, and how that went. Thanks, happy Saturday!

Question about book Almanzo

In LTOTP, he has a huge stash of wheat seed in his wall, he trains horses to flip them and make money, he has every kind of buggy and sleigh, he eats mountains of pancakes, and he helps the community. He gives Laura so much time in commuting, and a fancy comb set and engagement ring. Then, in the First Four Years, much bad luck with farming, but also didn't mention the house debt to Laura until after they were married. Was Almanzo in debt like Charles, and just managed it better? Why could he not have made a living being a horse flipper? Just some thoughts as I re-read.

*I love these books and this is not meant as criticism, just discussion.

I've been applying for the state since January. I decided to message one of the hire contacts for a position I was pretty keen on to ask for an update. He was actually pretty thorough and told me that position (which closed in February) had 300+ applicants and that they were going to start interviewing later this month...so 3 months after the job closing date.

This isn't a complaint but rather some info for folks who aren't having great luck. He was telling me there are many departments that are this backed up or worse.

For the right person, I would be such an amazing wife and partner. I don't want kids and would love to build a DINK lifestyle with someone but most of the guys who are enthusiastic about me working are dudes who want to get out of working and have me be the breadwinner.

I can cook well and have maintained my own space for 10 years. I am thin and maintain my health. Idc if you want to game for hours because I will dive into a book or movie and we can meet up for dinner.

I'm not a spender I am the opposite of extravagant. I am frugal and work hard to hopefully retire well. I like to live a drama free, mellow, peaceful life. If you broke down on the side of the road I'd bring a spare and change it out for you.

I am average looking, not instagram average where there's filters and "natural" makeup, but average. I just want a partner who holds up their end of the bargain. Works a job that maintains their own expenses, has a car, is drug free, and has common sense.

I think I will die alone.

So I got a call for an interview last Thursday, they left a voicemail. I did not see until 7 at night which I figured was past the state operating hours, so I called back the following morning (last Friday) around 9 am. I left a voicemail, saying I was following up and eager to interview.

It is Tuesday and I have not heard anything back. I am hesitant to call again as I do not want to pester anyone and they have my information. What are my odds they will call again?
