For Teams meetings, is it normal for performance to be bad initially and improve later?

Hi

I'm using a Nomad eSIM in China as my hotspot, from which I use my own Wireguard VPN to connect to my US home.

I find that when I join Teams meetings, for the first 5 min or so the performance would be bad. For instance, there'd be dropping of others' voice when they are screen sharing. But it usually improves such that I'd have no issues for the rest of the meeting.

I heard this is due to the "warm up" period where cell towers moves you to a higher speed lane once they detects you need a lot of bandwidth, and they start you off with a slow, low priority one.

I wonder what your experience is like?

Thanks

Concerned about Windows Update automatically turning on WIFI/Bluetooth

Hi,

I got a Wireguard setup working with GL.iNet devices. I put my work laptop into Airplane mode and turned off WIFI/Bluetooth explicitly and only connects to my Slate 7 via Ethernet.

However, ChatGPT told me that Windows Updates, particularly drivers updates can "reset" my WIFI/Bluetooth settings and turn it ON, which is the default.

This is a bit concerning as I can only seem to pause updates up to 5 weeks. While there are BIOS trick I can do to turn OFF WIFI/Bluetooth I might not have access to it and it might trigger IT flag, which might be worse than them just seeing that I'm in Japan (they might not even care about the logs or see it as Japan isn't China or Iraq)

I would hate to fly back to the US each 5 weeks just for Windows updates.

Please share your experience and offer some advice.

Thanks

How to meet new people in Shanghai?

Hi,

I'm new to Shanghai and hope to join some events and make new friends. Are there WeChat groups I can join?

What's the best platform (like Meetup?) or locations to find events and make new friends? I'm particularly interested in making connections in specific fields, like entrepreneurship, etc, but anything is fine.

Thanks

Issues with Teams call in China

Hi,

I wonder if you guys ever had issues with Team calls with coworkers in the US while in China? Today a coworker called me (direct, not meeting) on Teams and it ringed a bit and stopped, as if he canceled. But I called him back it worked.

I also didn't face any issues joining meetings, its only when a coworker calls me directly do I get this issue. I don't have much of a sample size to go on, but based on ChatGPT this stems from latency and inbound/outbound connection type of thing, something to do with handshake.

I hope to hear your perspectives and experience with this. Have you faced similar issues when others call you? How about when you try to call others?

FYI I'm using a Wireguard setup with GL.iNet devices (option 3) and use a US SIM on roaming.

Thanks

Has high latency ever caused an issue with IT for you?

I'm testing my Wireguard setup at a foreign country (on vacation) now and while the speed is fine, the latency when I ping google.com is about 500 ms.

I wonder if this is a significant issue and I should just forget about the "digital nomad" life?

If you are successfully working secretly from abroad, I'd like to hear what your latency is like and if it has caused any issues.

Is it possible to connect Slate 7 to my hotspot phone with cable?

Hi,

I setup a Wireguard VPN with Flint 2 and Slate 7 (travel router).

I would use Slate 7 in repeater mode to connect to my phone hotspot WIFI when traveling.

But in order to save battery life on the phone and achieve better signal, I wonder if it's possible to connect the Slate 7 to the phone via Ethernet or USB cable? I see a regular USB-A port on the back of the Slate 7 (not the USB-C power port). If so, I wonder how to set it up?

Hi,

I bought 2 eSIMs (1 from Trip.com and another from Holafly), but the days I selected might not be enough because I may have to extend my trip to China.

I wonder if it's possible to "add on" to the existing eSIM (more data, or more days), or do I have to buy another one?

The reason I ask is because it seems there are recommendations that one should purchase and install the eSIM before landing in China, and only activate in China. Will I be able to buy another one in China (assuming I can get out of the Great Firewall via other VPN or eSIM)?

Thanks

Hi,

I'm using a Flint 2 as my Wireguard server and I have a dedicated modem for Xfinity. The Wireguard VPN is working fine as I'm able to connect remotely using my travel router (Slate 7).

However, out of curiosity, when I looked at the firewall setting of the Flint 2, under "Zones", wgserver -> WAN has "Reject" set for Forward. This seems to be the default setting as I have not messed with the firewall.

I'm confused as I thought it needs to be set to "Accept" in order for Wireguard to work (in order for traffic to exit to the internet). Perhaps once Wireguard server starts some other rules override it?

Very curious. Thanks

Hi,

I have a CS degree and Stat degree but I have not studied LLMs like ChatGPT, Claude, or frameworks like OpenClaw deeply. I want to understand them more in depth.

Specifically, I want to understand the core concepts like transformers, tokens, etc better, which will be the first step in becoming an AI Engineer.

I also want to learn OpenClaw to help me automate tasks.

Hopefully you can recommend some good courses/videos that can help me. I'm not looking for 10 min "high level" intro videos, I'm looking for multi-hour "courses" that'll go a bit deep. I do have decent background in traditional ML and I don't know where to start.

Hi,

I don't know how to tell if my pads need replacing. Not sure if that plate like thing near the rotor is the actual pad or some kind of metal frame for the pad.

My car is making some brake noise but I'm not sure if it's due to worn pads or rust from sitting outside too long.

Thanks

Hi,

I got a X430.

Can you advise on how to map an area with a thin pole such as shown below? Ideally I want the mower to mow all sides of the pole, especially the grass between the pole and the curb. So far, I have not mapped the pole as a "no go zone", and the camera merely avoids it, and it did not mow the portion between the pole and the curb. In fact, its movement around the pole seems random.

I wonder if setting the pole explicitly as a "no go zone" will allow the mower to move more predictably around the pole and thereby cover more areas around it? I'm just concerned the pole is too "thin" to work as a "no go zone".

Thanks

▲ 4 r/eSIMs

Hi

I'm going to buy a couple of eSIMs for travel. While I got an iPhone SE that supports eSIM, the battery isn't good. I feel it'd be useful to have a backup device that can take an eSIM and run hotspots.

I looked at a couple of devices on Amazon and it seems those comes with their own data plan. I want one where I'm free to use any eSIM I want without unnecessary stuff.

Can someone shed some light on their experience and maybe offer recommendations?

Thanks

Hi,

I got a Macbook and want to use yl-dlp to download Youtube videos as MP4. The Github readme is not very user friendly.

I did search around and found other Reddit posts on teaching Windows users on how to setup and use yl-dlp, but didn't find any for Mac users.

Hi,

I ordered AT&T Internet Air and the device was delivered to me. The box has been sitting for 2 weeks and I haven't even activated it or opened it.

I no longer need it and I want to cancel. I wonder what is the easiest way to do this:

  1. Call some 800 number

  2. Chat

  3. Go to a nearby AT&T store

Also curious if I'd be charged anything since I haven't activated it.

Thanks

Hi,

I recently got a X430 and I use the Android version of the Navimow app. I find that it tend to freeze or take a long time especially when mapping and saving a map. It's also annoying when after creating a map it asks you to modify the mow directions and sometimes you have to select more than 1 direction to proceed.

I also found that when turning on the mower, it's better to turn on the mower first and then start the app to ensure quick connectivity. If I start the app first and then mower is not on, even after turning the mower on the app might not "pick it up" right away and a restart of the app is needed.

A family member uses Apple and I will make him an user too. I wonder if the Apple version is less buggy?

Feel free to share your experience and any tips.

Thanks

Hi,

I've been using the X430 for a week or two now and still learning all the features. Right now I'm trying to figure out the Mower lifted alarm, and geo-fence alarm and how it works.

For the mower lifted alarm, does lifting it by the handle (while the front wheels is still on the ground) count or does it need to be completely lifted? After the alarm sound, how do you turn it off? Is it by entering the PIN?

I want to know before I experiment with it because I don't want to get into a situation where it makes loud alarms and I cannot silence it quickly.

Thanks

Hi,

I got a business internet plan and it came with a FX4100 gateway. I also requested a static IP and changed the APN to b2b.static

I find that the middle light below (the one with the bars) sometimes flicker to red momentarily. I wonder what that means and if it's normal? The signal I have is pretty good (RSRP -86dbm, RSRQ -11dbm, SNR 27db). Just want to make sure it's not a "lose of service" that might break my VPN connection periodically.

Also, because I have my own router (GL.iNet Flint 2), I wonder if setting up the Wireguard VPN would be easier if I set the FX4100 to "IP Passthrough" rather than doing the port forwarding...

Thank you

Hi,

I feel I have PWM sensitivity. I've been using Chinese android phones like Oppo, One Plus for as long as I can remember, with no problem. Supposedly Chinese manufacturers uses higher PWM frequency...

Yet I cannot stand to look at my friends' Iphone 13/14. I guess this is due to the way OLED (or Super Retina or whatever the hell Apple calls it) works.

Interestingly I have no issues with my M2 and M4 Macbook Pro, I guess they uses "Liquid Retina" which are mini-LEDs or LCDs.

Anyway, I kinda need to buy an Iphone for certain usage. I hear conflicting things about the 17, 17e on their options to turn off PWM flickering. Please advise.

My question is this: Am I out of luck other than getting an used Iphone 11 (which uses LCD)? Does all Iphone since the 11 suffer the same issue or are there differences among them to look into?

Thanks
