Msc Maths

Hello guys. Is anyone from Msc Maths? Can someone tell me how the department and program is? I'm mostly interested in higher studies abroad, so what is the scope of someone from IITM going to Ivy leagues for Phd? How are the professors, attendance policy etc?

How is the class schedule? Do you get time to do something else in the afternoons like external internships or jobs?

Currently I've been allotted IIT Roorkee in Jam allotment. But there's a high chance I could upgrade to Madras in subsequent rounds. Should I upgrade?

Ugc Scholarship

People who have been selected for ugc scholarship, what were your cgpas?

I have 9.57 in Bsc Maths. Is that a guaranteed selection (provided I submit all documents in time)?

Why IIT M fees is higher?

Hey guys, so I'm joining IIT for MSc Maths through JAM. Currently I have been allotted to Roorkee. It might later upgrade to Madras. The question I have is why IIT M has a significantly higher fees than other older IITs. Tution fees in Kanpur, Roorkee, Guwahati and others is 3k per sem while in Madras it is 25k. That is almost 8.5 times the normal fees. Compared to other old IITs, Madras is not much different in infrastructure (correct me if I'm wrong). Hyderabad also has high fees but atleast their infrastructure justifies it. I'm doubtful of upgrading to Madras because of the fees. I'm self funding my master's. I can't bare Madras fees. Even Roorkee fees is manageable only because I have scholarship.

Earning Opportunities while doing Msc

Hey, so I'm joining either IIT Roorkee or ISI for masters in Maths. It would be very helpful if I could earn like some money during my masters. I'm completely self funding my master's including hostel, message and tution fees for two years. I do have Inspire scholarship. So I can manage it. But that will only cover basic expenses. I need like atleast 2k per month for other expenses. Is there any online opportunities to earn that much? I don't need much. At max just 5k per month.

Mathematical Modelling and Dynamical Systems

I'm starting my masters in Maths. It's the top Mathematics institute in my country. The problem is in this institute Algebra and Analysis is the primary focus. However I feel that I'm deeply passionate about Differential Equations, Mathematical Physics, Mathematical Modeling and Dynamical Systems. I'm currently doing a summer research project on Control Theory. So my question is this, what all extra skills should I pick up along my Masters? I'm not skilled in computer programming or anything.

Some additional questions regarding future....

Which institute is the best for research in the above mentioned areas? The institutions also should be open to foreign students btw and should be fully funded.

What are the job opportunities after Doctorate? I'm not cut out for office jobs. I love Maths and would love to research in it, so is there any jobs in industry that is research heavy (while paying good money)?

21M Burning Sensation Down There

I'm a gay 21M guy who has been sexually active. I have recently tested for STDs including HIV, Herpes, Syphilis, Chlyamdia and Gonorrhoea. I tested positive for chlyamdia, took antibiotics for a week. So I need answers.

My urethra (inside the penis) gets extremely red (like bloodish red) after I ejaculate. And then there's burning sensation. I have had this for a couple of months and I could only get tested recently. Before the STD tests, I had my urine tested and it showed no infection. After I tested positive for chlyamdia, I thought it would go away. But it is still happening. Has anyone got a theory beside STDs? And even if it is a STD, which one is it? Which test should I do?

Foreign PhD in Maths; Pathways

I need some strong advice. I finished my bachelor's in maths with 9.65 from an Autonomous college under a state university. I'm going for MSc Maths. I've written JAM and based on the rank, I'm guaranteed to get into IIT Kanpur -Roorkee- Kharagpur. I've written ISI Mmath but messed up a bit, so not certain about my chances with it. Wrote TIFR, NBHM and CMI too. Didn't get any of it. I've also applied to IISER Pune Iphd and IACS Kolkata IPhd. First priority is ISI for sure.

I want to do PhD in Maths, preferably in Differential equations and mathematical modelling (not certain as interest areas might change). I want to tackle the biggest institutions like MIT, Harvard, Cambridge, Oxford, Stanford, ETH or Cern. I was happy on doing PhD in India (either in TIFR or IISC; I won't take any other option). But my sister, who has a doctorate from NIT told me not to do PhD here but rather go abroad. She's planning to go abroad for Post doc too.

My biggest issue is I'm completely self funding my master's. I won't get even one rupee from family for anything. I have Inspire scholarship, so I can barely manage IITs fees. And with luck I will get UGC scholarship but it would be released very late. So will have to struggle for two years with money.

My question is if I get into IACS, should I go there over Kanpur, Kharagpur or Roorkee. I know mathematics department is developing in IACS, but the stipend will really help me. Will foreign universities see a huge difference between IACS and IIT in portfolio? Keep in mind I'll do lot of research projects, currently doing one right now in IIST. If I have stellar research proposal and background in research, would I have a same chance at foreign universities as IACS alum even though IIT Kanpur has a stronger global recognition?

After ISI, my priority was IISERs. But I can't manage IISERs fee even with stipend.

Placements are not even in my radar. I just want strong research culture and support which will take me abroad.

Should I go for IACS over IITs? Does anyone know if IACS maths alumni go abroad for research?

Or should I take a partial drop and write Tifr and ISI once more and see if I get into it keeping in my mind I'll take 3 years in TIFR to exit with MS.

Doubtful about MMATH cutoff

What do you think MMATH cutoff would be? I have PMA 68. Do you think that's enough? Last year it was 75 but in 2024 it was 59. Is this year's paper comparable to 2024 or 2025?

How was your MMATH? Compared to 2024 and 2025, what do you think about cutoff?

For me, the PMA paper was very easy but I made a lot of careless mistakes. I know I have like 17 correct ( hopefully, the answers I've looked up is correct) right now. So overall PMA I think I would get 68. Do you think that will be enough? Last year cutoff was 75. If I clear PMA, then PMB will be a cakewalk. I did 4.5 questions full right and another question which I'm doubtful about the answer. My biggest fear is I won't clear PMA cutoff.

And the ideal question in PMB was extremely lengthy. It took like half hour to just write it even though I didn't have to think much.

Best college for Msc Maths

Hey guys. Which college is best for MSc Maths according to you? I want to do PhD abroad, so keep in mind international recognition and strong research culture are top priorities.

Should I even try DU if I can go to IITs?

Kanpur vs Roorkee vs Kharagpur

Hey guys. So I've applied for Jam counselling this year and these three I can get with ease for Msc Maths. Which should I choose?

I'm focused on higher education especially somewhere high ranking like MIT, Stanford, Caltech, Cambridge or Oxford (I know I'm a lazy dreamer). So which IIT has best reputation for PhD abroad?

Also I'm not a very disciplined person, I might slack off here and there. Which IIT is less strict on attendance?

Hostel Life is very big priority for me.
