I'm finally leaving my dismissive-avoidant husband.

And I am completely broken. My heart is shattered. Destroyed. It feels like I'm dying.

I'm sorry in advance. This post is going to be really long and really messy.

For the past seven years, since I met him, he has always been emotionally unavailable and extremely unempathetic and cold. He never knows what to say, always shifts blame, deflects, gets defensive, etc.

I always thought that I could fix him. That it would get better with time, or that he would change when we got married.

I was so wrong, and it is my fault for marrying potential. I wish someone had warned me and told me not to marry potential, not to stay with someone because I thought he would change. I wish someone had told me, because now I'm in a long term entanglement with him and I am suffering the consequences. And the consequences are severe.

I have been his teacher, his mother, his therapist. Never his wife or girlfriend.

I'm going to miss the home that I built with him. To be fair, I mostly built it myself, but together still (it's a rental apartment). I will miss it more than I will miss him. Which is crazy. I'm not ready to let go of the home. I feel like I'm ready to let go of him, but not the home. Of course, I'm also struggling to let go of him because I do love him, but it's like pouring into a bottomless cup.

I told him I want us to separate three days ago, and I know that the separation will eventually lead to divorce. I'm just waiting for things to be sorted with my family because it needs to be official. We need to sit with my dad and his dad, because that's how it is in my country, before we begin divorce proceedings.

When I told him I wanted us to separate, he cried a lot. Did not utter a single word, but cried in front of me. And all I wanted to do was to tell him I was just kidding, and to just go and hold him. Comfort him. Which is insane!!! Because I have cried a million times before to him, and my tears have never done anything to him or elicited any warm response from him.

My husband cannot even hide the fact that he doesn't like me. He completely stonewalls me when I cry. He's rarely ever there in my most difficult times, particularly when I need emotional support. He's just never there.

He literally hates me. He tenses up. He looks away. I have to beg him for his love. Beg him to look at me. Beg him to love me. And I can no longer take it.

Now we're living in separate rooms. This is the first time that I'm sleeping in the bed that we used to sleep in together, but now it's just without him.

I like the space. I like not having a man that snores next to me, but I miss his warmth. I miss him. I don't want to be alone, and I know that if I do get a divorce and go through with it, I'm probably going to be living alone somewhere else afterwards, because the rent here is really expensive and I probably won't be able to stay here for very long.

I am gutted and broken beyond words. I cannot believe it came to this, and I cannot believe that he does not love me enough to change. And I cannot believe that I am not the woman that is going to inspire growth, healing and change in him.

He doesn't see any problem with his dismissive-avoidant tendencies. He doesn't see any problem, and he is happy to continue with his life. Even during this separation, I feel him drifting away more and more than before, if there was even a way for him to be more avoidant. I thought there wasn't, but there is.

He's drifting away more and more now, until I know there will be nothing left. He acts like I am dead to him and avoids me like the plague, because I AM the plague to him. Someone who is emotional, who has basic emotional needs, who seeks connection, who seeks empathy, who wants to be loved and to feel safe emotionally. Someone who wants to be heard. That is the plague to a dismissive avoidant person.

There's so much more I want to say from what I have been journaling, but I don't want to make this post longer than it already is. I am in desperate need for support. I am so desperate and alone. I am not okay.

I'm going to have an online session with my therapist on Tuesday. But I am still in denial. I cannot believe that all of this is happening. I cannot believe that he has told me himself that he does not want to go to therapy. He does not want to change. He does not want to love me in the way that I want to be loved. It's too much for him.

And there's so much more I want to say. My heart hurts. My heart aches beyond words.

The one thing out of the million things that have hurt me, the one thing that I truly keep coming back to and cannot get over, is how he says I have anger issues because I get so frustrated with having to beg to be loved repeatedly.

Eventually, I start crying. Eventually, I start yelling. It starts out as me calmly and respectfully asking, but after repeated times and years of this, I get frustrated. Then suddenly, the conversation is no longer about what I am bringing up and what I am saying. It turns into tone-policing, and he gets upset with me because of my tone and because I'm crying.

And he says, "I wish you weren't crying. I wish you weren't yelling and getting frustrated with me. Then I would give you what you want."

But I know that's a lie, because he never did. He never gave me what I wanted. He tone policed just to avoid even more. He is avoidant and escapes to the max.

He's always on his phone and on TikTok. He doesn't want to look me in the eyes. I always have to ask him to put his phone down and be present. He is NEVER truly present.

And I hate myself so so much for marrying potential. I hate myself so much because he was this way since day one, but I kept pushing. I kept going through with it because I had that "I can fix him" and "he will change" mentality.

But now I know this was all a mistake.

I have my own healing to do, but my goddess. I wish I wasn't in this situation. I wish I didn't let it go on for this long. I wish I didn't have to lose my home. I wish I didn't have to end up alone again.

I remember telling him before we got married how I could not wait for us to get married, because I was sick of sleeping in an empty bed and how much I wished to fall asleep next to someone every night.

It hurts so bad.

Part of me wants to stay so I can keep the home. Part of me wants to stay to have a man help me with things around the house and my chores and my life. Part of me wants to stay so I can have someone to hold at night.

But I cannot deny the amount of damage that this is doing to me emotionally and mentally. I'm going crazy. It is torture. It is actual torture.

He has tortured me for years. And for the first time, I had enough and got the separation. We are separated now, and I'm aiming next for the divorce. It has to happen.

I'm doing it against my will. He made me choose to do this. He made me choose this because he does not want to change. Because he doesn't see a problem.

And I'm crying as I write this. I'm crying at this realization.

I feel like there is a factory out there that creates dismissive avoidant men, because they are all copy-pasted. Their behaviours are exactly the same. They behave the exact same way. They say the exact same things.

And when I realized that, and when I read about it, it made me feel completely helpless. I was like, oh my fucking fuck, my experience is not unique, and it is not special, and millions of other women have gone through the exact same thing with these dismissive avoidant men.

And I wish he could see the patterns. I wish that he could heal. I wish that he could go to therapy and see the value in it, but he doesn't "believe" in therapy.

According to him, therapy doesn't work. But, in the same breath, he wants me to change my therapist because my current therapist is not "curing" my supposed anger issues. When my anger issues are just hurt that he has caused.

And the fucking hypocrisy. You don't believe in therapy. You don't want to go to it. But you want me to keep going and find another therapist to fix me even though I'm happy with my current therapist.

She has helped me better express my needs without getting frustrated, but like, normal humans get frustrated. Normal humans cry when it's been years of betrayal, disappointment, hurt, pain, coldness and emotional unavailability.

I like how I said I didn't want to make this post long, but it is already long as fuck.

I need support so badly. I want to experience love. I don't want to be alone. I don't want to live alone afterwards. I don't want to let go. I don't know what to do about letting go of my home. I don't want to let go of his touch, his soft skin, his warmth.

I do not want to let go of it, but I have to.

I know I have to.

I am faced with this reality, and the cold, hard truth is smacking me right in the fucking face. And it hurts so badly.

I do not see any road in the future with him that does not include divorce. I cannot see it.

And dismissive avoidants rarely ever have the willingness and openness to change, to heal and to grow, because they don't see anything wrong with what they're doing.

How blessed are they? How lucky are they to go on with their life and not have to process their feelings, not have to feel anything, and be perpetually and chronically escaping and avoiding and forever running away from anything that brings them discomfort.

How lucky are they to be able to do that?

How lucky is my husband to be able to do that even during this separation?

Meanwhile, I am just gone. I am broken, shredded, gutted, a wreck, feeling everything. And it all hurts. And I am once again carrying it alone.

I have carried it alone before, and I'm continuing to carry it alone right now in this separation. And he will never, ever see anything wrong with that.

Again, there is so much more I want to say, but I just wanted to pour my heart out here.

If anybody can support me, can give me advice, please talk to me. I'm not okay.

I don't have anyone supporting me. I have my sister and my mother, and they're helping me a bit through this. But I'm not very close to them. They're trying, and I appreciate that.

I actually believe I'm in an alternate universe, and this is not real. That none of this is happening.

I'm still in denial. I'm still in shock.

And a part of me is like no it's fine. We're not going to get divorced. We're going to go back to how things were. Everything will be normal again. Everything will be fine.

Part of me is still hanging on to that. It is still believing that.

But the other part of me is slowly growing every day and knows that I have been pushed off a cliff by the truth.

And when I fall, I will fall into the divorce. Hard.

And there is no way around it.
