How to Fix Dual Screens & Floating Windows in SteamVR

If you're playing FlatVR via SteamVR and run into an issue where you see two screens at launch - a small floating one and a big one in the background - here’s how to fix it:

To switch to the main background screen, just open the SteamVR menu, select FlatVR, and click "Return to Game".
If the small screen is pinned in space as a floating window, it won't disappear automatically when you switch. Just turn off float mode on that window and you're good to go.

Alternatively:

  1. Completely exit VR and launch the game in standard desktop mode first - this prevents SteamVR from launching it in Theater Mode.
  2. Next, launch FlatVR, connect your VR headset, and hit Start.

This bypasses Theater Mode completely, leaving you with a clean, full-screen VR setup so you can just jump in and enjoy the game!

DIY Magnetic Treadmill — turn any manual treadmill into a VR one

https://reddit.com/link/1vqqw2y/video/z0l9rbmwixjh1/player

A magnet on the roller, a reed switch or a Hall sensor beside it, an Arduino.

Every pass of the magnet is one pulse, and the pulse rate becomes your walking speed.

About $10 of parts and an evening of work.

Everything is open, MIT licensed — wiring for three sensor variants with photos, the Arduino firmware, the plugin source, and a ready-built plugin:

https://github.com/integralab-am/magnetic_treadmill

Full build guide — parts list, where the magnet and the sensor go, wiring, firmware, and every setting explained:

https://bodywalkvr.com/features/setup_diy_treadmill

Two ways to use it, and the free one is complete. Free — the standalone treadmill app presents a virtual gamepad, and BodyWalk Lite forwards one axis of it onto your VR controller's stick.

One binding in the Mapping tab: Xbox-LStick Y → VR L-Stick Y. That is the whole configuration.

With the plugin (PRO) — Magnetic Treadmill appears in the Steps tab: a live sensor graph with the trigger level drawn across it, Speed 100 %, inertia, speed curve, S2 sprint, per-game profiles — in one place with physical turning, jumping and crouching.

The treadmill works either way. The plugin buys comfort, not the ability to walk.

[Dev Update] BodyWalkVR now supports 16 languages + Localized AI Support! 🌍

We've been working hard on making BodyWalkVR more accessible globally, and we just dropped a massive localization update. Here’s what’s new:

🌍 We now speak 16 languages! The entire UI, tooltips, and setup guides are fully translated into 16 languages (including German, French, Spanish, Japanese, Korean, Chinese, Russian and more). We also added proper native font support, so no more missing characters or weird empty boxes.

🤖 AI Support that actually knows your UI Our built-in AI Support Assistant got a huge upgrade. It automatically detects your UI language and talks to you using the exact translated names for tabs, sliders, and buttons you see on your screen. If you're stuck setting up bindings in Spanish or Japanese, the AI knows exactly what you're looking at.

🏃 Bonus: Manual Treadmill Support Got a cheap, non-motorized treadmill? You can now stick an optical mouse under the belt to translate your real steps into VR locomotion! We built a quick 3-step setup wizard and a live visualizer to make it super easy to dial in.

We'd love for our international players to try it out and let us know how the translations feel.

Happy walking! 🚶‍♂️💨

How to use a DIY VR Treadmill in any VR Game (BodyWalkVR Bridge)

A quick demonstration showing the DIY Arduino VR Treadmill in action with VR games like Dungeons of Eternity and VRChat, using BodyWalkVR as a bridge!

Currently, the DIY VR Treadmill driver sends motion data to a virtual Xbox controller. In this video, we use the Mapping tab in BodyWalkVR to grab that gamepad signal and seamlessly convert it into VR controller thumbstick movements for SteamVR.

⚙️ How to run this setup:

  1. Launch the VR Treadmill Controller app from GitHub and connect your Arduino.
  2. Launch BodyWalkVR (version 1.32 or higher is required; the free BodyWalkVR Lite version works perfectly for this) and select SteamVR Hook as the output.
  3. You can disable the Direction and Steps tabs in BodyWalkVR, as you won't need them for this setup.
  4. Go to the Mapping tab and select SteamVR.
  5. Map the axis: assign the Xbox controller Left Axis Y to the SteamVR controller Left Stick Axis Y.
  6. Launch your SteamVR game and enjoy!

(Note: The ViGEmBus driver needed for the virtual Xbox controller is already included in BodyWalkVR, so no extra installation is required!)

🔗 Check out the projects:

Note: Full native support for magnetic treadmills will be added directly to BodyWalkVR in future updates!

DIY Manual VR Treadmill with Arduino & C++ Virtual Controller - Tested in VRChat! (Fully Open-Source)

Hey everyone! I wanted to show my DIY manual VR treadmill locomotion in action inside VRChat (video attached).

How it works:

  1. An Arduino reads a magnetic reed switch at 1000 Hz to detect steps.
  2. A custom C++ app processes the speed (via double SMA smoothing) and emulates a virtual Xbox 360 controller.
  3. It gives smooth, responsive analog movement and handles automatic sprinting (L3).

The project is fully open-source. Anyone is welcome to use the code and build instructions!

Let me know what you think!

[Dev Update] I made "BodyWalk Lite" — an absolutely FREE app that lets you move in VR by physically leaning your body.

Hey everyone!

Quick dev update here. I wanted to make physical VR locomotion accessible to everyone, so I just released BodyWalk Lite — a completely free version of our app that replaces thumbstick movement with physical body leaning.

How it works: You simply strap your smartphone to your chest (or use a dedicated body tracker). The app reads your body's tilt. You lean forward to walk forward, and lean sideways to strafe. It is extremely intuitive, responsive, and precise.

Why use it? It feels amazing in active VR games where you move a lot. Instead of mindlessly pushing a thumbstick, you physically engage your core to move around. It also drastically reduces motion sickness for many people because your physical movement directly triggers your in-game movement.

Compatibility: It works right out of the box with all SteamVR games. We've also included a mapping feature so you can easily map the movement for Flat2VR game mods.

You can download it right now, anytime, absolutely for free and give this movement method a try:

Feel free to ask any questions, and let me know what you think!

Just testing some new possibilities in Night City...

We recently linked physical movements to the amazing new VR Port mod by dariulone (https://www.nexusmods.com/cyberpunk2077/mods/30093).

On top of that, we've also added the ability to run our "free hands" mod alongside the Luke Ross VR mod and other Flat2VR plugins! This is what it looks like when your hands are finally untied in VR.

If you want to try it out yourself, you can grab our Universal Hands VR mod here: https://www.nexusmods.com/cyberpunk2077/mods/30399

Hey! We've just released a major update to BodyWalkVR — our accessible, software-based locomotion tool — and we need your help testing it.

Our biggest new feature is the Step Locomotion System. Instead of just leaning your body to move, you can now literally walk in place!

We need testers! 🛠️ BodyWalkVR is in active development and completely free right now. If youd want to try it out, come join our Discord https://discord.gg/kVYjEdJx3e to grab the download and let us know how it feels!

  • Step-to-Walk: Strap trackers to your legs/feet (we support SlimeVR, SteamVR trackers, or JoyCons via owoTrack). The app reads your physical stepping cadence and converts it directly into your in-game speed.
  • Natural Steering: You still steer naturally by turning your body/chest in the real world.

If you want to physically walk through worlds like Skyrim VRCyberpunk 2077, or Forefront, this completely changes the immersion. Our goal is to give you that room-scale treadmill feeling without needing a massive $3,000 piece of hardware.
