feeling disillusioned with first corporate job

I graduated with a degree in English and minor in communications in May and after literally 150 applications I managed to get an internship in communications for a healthcare provider.

I’m super thankful for the opportunity don’t get me wrong, it’s the exact job I’ve trained for and all the responsibilities are things I want to learn. But, it was never my intention to work in healthcare. I do not like the topic and it’s hard to find motivation to learn skills when the topic they revolve around is something I don’t have passion for. I just feel like I’m filling up all the space in my head with stuff I won’t need or care about after I leave the job.

Also, this internship is my first paid, full time, corporate opportunity that I’ve had. Working in a cubicle for 8 hours a day in a mostly empty office doing Teams calls is taking a lot to get used to, along with all the corporate jargon and customs.

I know I should stick with the job for at least a couple years to gain some skills then look for another opportunity, but in the mean time does anyone have tips for surviving your first corporate job in an industry you’re not passionate about? Sorry for rant, being 21 and in corporate is just a rude awakening and advice is appreciated! :((

making friends in oak park/poetry scene

I recently moved to oak park after graduating from university for my new job. I am 21 and interested in poetry as well so I want to get into the poetry scene here if there is one because my job won’t give me time to get involved in Chicago. Are there any poetry clubs or book clubs in Oak Park? Or places to make friends with other recent grads or anyone? Thank you!

tips for first communications internship in healthcare sector?

I recently graduated university with a degree in English and a minor in communications. After 150 applications I scored an internship doing internal/external comms for a nonprofit healthcare accreditation organization.

Any tips from people who have worked in a similar sector (healthcare or nonprofits) on good questions to ask before my first day and within the first weeks or advice on things to keep in mind or do? It’s my first paid internship so I want to do my best.

Also, if professionals in this sector have tips on how to stay up-to-date on current industry trends, discourse, or resources, I would appreciate it. I’m kind of asking if there is a newsletter or news outlet that a LOT of people in the industry read and chat about that would be good to know about.

Thank you!!!

got a job after 150 applications, but somehow still not happy

title, I finally got my first post-grad job after tons of searching but receiving an offer made me feel more sad than happy. I was unfortunately enjoying the freedom of going back home to my parents and rediscovering my hobbies. I feel like I will no longer be able to hang out with my friends or do things I enjoy because I will have to assimilate to the 9-5 corporate schedule (plus, this job has nothing to do with my degree).

How can I get used to the idea of working for the rest of my life when I could be doing fun things? It just seems so bleak.

tonsil stones ONLY behind one tonsil?

I only get tonsil stones completely behind my right tonsil. There are no crypts or holes ON or IN my tonsils, and the stones are NEVER visible. I only know they have accumulated once I feel as if something is persistently stuck in my throat and flex my throat to see them only a tiny bit. Then I push upward above my tonsil and they come out from the flap/hole behind it.

Anyone else have this weird tonsil stone pattern? What is the best way to remove tonsil stones that are hidden behind the tonsil?

tailor’s bunion or callus?

I’ve always had bony feet and this callus behind my pinky for as long as I can remember, but recently I noticed that when I paint my toenails polish from my pinky toes is accidentally rubbed on the side of my fourth toes. Can this be a tailor’s bunion pushing my pinky toe or is it just the callus?

I am very young and there is no pain when I walk, I just notice sometimes that my pinkies feel “stuck” beneath my other toes and I try to not wear narrow shoes. But I have a lot of mobility in my toes still.

If I slowly remove the callus with Pumice will the foot be better?

[routine help] how to remove pie or hyperpigmentation scars on cheeks

I have had acne since I was 16 years old (now 21) and I’ve must now gotten to a minimal routine that works for me, but I still have these deep scars on my cheeks (shown in pic, sorry for weird cropping. My right cheek has way more). It is also the only place I get acne. I guess it’s hormonal/cystic. Any ideas on what actives I could add to my routine to finally alleviate the redness and scarring?

portfolio advice

what are some good examples of a communications specialist portfolio?

i just graduated as an English major with minors in psychology and communication with a certificate in business and technical writing and I want to pursue communications/social media marketing as I have completed three internships in those fields. I’m not sure exactly how a communications portfolio is formatted since I was originally aiming to be a copywriter so my portfolio is focused more on that, but I realized my goals are more suited to communications.

So, drop your portfolio and/or LinkedIn, I’d really like to see communications portfolios from professionals. Thank you!

how to keep learning while looking for a job

I am about to graduate with a BA in English and minors in psychology and communications. I have done three internships as a communications specialist and I want to continue pursuing communications or social media management after graduation. During this limbo period between graduation and my first job, how can I learn about industry trends and keep my writing skills sharp? Any resources other professionals in this industry use?

ALL tips and resources are welcome. I am struggling to stay hopeful and keep applying for jobs after 120 applications. Thank you.

just graduated college, how do I start the rest of my life?

just walked the stage yesterday, and I have no job lined up (120 applications, rejected after last round of interviews, it’s tough out here) and im living with my parents. Besides that, I have so many goals and things I need to learn in order to feel like an adult, so how do I start tackling the rest of my life?

It’s just so strange being a student since I was three years old, and suddenly not having that be a part of my identity anymore at 21. I’m not sure what to do with myself without the constant demands and structure of school. I know I probably (God willing) have a long life ahead of me but I don’t know how to start it.

What is something you wish you would’ve started planning or doing immediately after graduating college? How do you organize your goals and tackle them slowly over the course of your life without burning out or getting bored?

Sorry im asking such big questions. All advice is appreciated.
