Primary Care Recommendations?

Hello, I just moved to Oak Park from out-of-state. I'm looking for doctor recommendations or even just facility recommendations for a general primary care, preferably a female. I've tried to look into things and seen a lot of favor for Northwestern, I would just prefer not going into the city. However, I don't mind driving 20-30 minutes away if it means more attentive care, just thought I would ask on here first. Thanks all!

Recommendations Drywall/Plumbing Combo

Hey neighbors!

Not sure if this is allowed so feel free to delete. I’m looking for recommendations for a unique scenario.

I own a condo in OP and moved in this past winter. It is an old building with plaster walls that are cracked behind one of my radiators.

I’m looking for someone who can remove the radiator, repair the wall, then reinstall the radiator with a new valve.

The association recommended a handyman some have used but I’ve contacted him three times over the past month and he still hasn’t provided a quote, I think he’s busy.

Lost keys

A bit of a longshot, but I lost a set of keys (4 regular keys plus a Toyota key fob). I’m retracing my steps but if someone picked them up I’m out of luck. The map shows the route I was walking when I lost them.

July 4th Fireworks

Relatively new to the area, and I'm wondering where folks go to watch fireworks on July 4th. Does anyone have reasonable kid-friendly recommendations that don't involve Navy Pier / downtown?

Barnes and Noble?

I’ve lived here now for about three years, today was the first time I realized that there’s a Barnes and Noble right past Harlem and Lake. I’m kind of in disbelief. Has this been here forever or is it new?

Video shows struggle, police shooting in Oak Park, Illinois

https://www.cbsnews.com/chicago/video/video-shows-struggle-police-shooting-in-oak-park-illinois/

Curious what people on a social media space other than Facebook take away from the release of the video.

For what it's worth, I have questions on why the stop happened in the first place on changing lanes without a signal since it happens all the time in that stretch of Austin. But, once the stop happened the driver had a cup of alcohol and may also have shown some signs of intoxication while driving before the stop.

I don't have as many questions on why the officer pulled him out of the car and patted him down, as it was then a DUI investigation, the guy lied about having the gun (and the officer may have felt he was lying), and the guy was acting strange in asking to go to the bathroom.

The struggle is pretty serious, and I think it's hard to say the officer here didn't have some reasonable fear when using deadly force after a minute of wrestling with the driver for control of the driver's gun.

I do question why all of the videos stop right after the shooting, and I wonder if that is because they are investigating what the officer/officers did in the immediate aftermath in terms of first aid.

I'm generally not very sympathetic to police shootings, but I don't see how the officer would ever be charged here. I do think there are lessons to learn, though. Like should an officer pull someone out of a car without a second officer on the scene? Would things have gone differently if a second officer had been there? Do we pull people over for things like lane changes without a signal based on race alone, or was the officer just enforcing the law on what he saw as bad driving, intoxication, etc.?

Not sure if Oak Park in the current environment will work on learning those lessons, or if this will become a flashpoint where people simply choose a side and either defend the police or say the shooting was unjustified.

Headshot photographer

I need to get some new professional headshots taken and I’d love to support someone local. Does anyone have recommendations for a good, reasonably priced local headshots photographer? Thanks!

Moving with 14 month old

Hi everyone! My husband, our 14-month-old daughter, and I are moving to Oak Park in about 2 weeks. My husband is a fellow, so he'll be working long hours, and I'll be a stay-at-home mom. We're moving away from my family and friends, so I'm feeling a little nervous about starting over and building a new support system.
I'd love to hear your recommendations! What are some good ways to meet other parents or families in the area? Any favorite playgroups, library story times, parks, or local mom groups? Thanks so much

Looking for late 20s pickleballers

Hi me and a group of friends, about 6 of us, play pickleball on weekday evenings and during the weekends at keystone park. We’re looking for more people our age to play with, hoping to find some people here!

Karen’s in Oak Park

Do y'all find that you encounter a lot of “Karens” here (any gender) than in other places? I moved here from the city a year ago and I find a lot more people complaining to us about dumb shit in public places/on our own property than I ever did in the city. Not that they didn’t exist there too, but can’t tell if I’m crazy, doing something wrong, or if that’s just the suburb life.

World Cup Watch?

Where are folks watching World Cup matches near OP? Trying for a place with good atmosphere, beers and kids are welcome. We watched at a soccer forward pub out of state last weekend. The atmosphere was amazing and we all had a great time. Everything we have seen so far is either downtown or much further out in the burbs.

Is there a Chicago-style "run crew" culture in Oak Park, or just traditional clubs?

Hey everyone,

I’ve lived in Oak Park for about 3 years now, and I’m trying to get a feel for the running community out here. I’m deeply used to the Chicago city run crew scene—crews like Peace Runners 773, Tortugas, Venados, 3run2, On the 9, 7 on Sunday’s, Run Too Hard, and Demon Hours. If you’ve run with any of them, you know the vibe: free to show up, deeply community-focused, high energy, and zero pretension. It’s about building community first, running second.

I recently tried out the Oak Park Runners Club to see what the local scene was like, and to be honest, the vibe felt totally off-putting compared to what I’m used to. Having to pay a $30 membership fee from the getco just to test out a single run felt incredibly restrictive. When I showed up, I got put on blast by the leadership during announcements about whether I had paid the fee yet, rather than getting a simple "welcome." So, I never went back and lost out on $30 🙃

There was no community cheering at the end for the back of packers, and the whole experience felt a bit cliquey and ego-driven. I can read people very well, and I could tell that the certain folks who did talk to me only felt obligated to do so. Pretty shitty, right?!

I did notice the run group skews a lot older (mostly 40+), which is completely fine, but it was just a stark difference from the younger city crews where I usually find peers to relate to. To be clear, I'm not trying to start a war on inclusivity or make a massive deal out of the lack of age or racial diversity with OPRC—it's just a noticeable cultural shift from the city environment.

It made me wonder: Is there an appetite in Oak Park for a new, free, community-first run crew? Or is the culture here fiercely loyal to the established legacy club?

If a new, free run crew focused on accessibility with similar energy and authenticity like the city crews, would people actually show up? Or would it be seen as "drawing a line in the sand" with the existing OPRC club because they have a paid membership base?

Would love to hear from any local runners, especially if you've felt a similar gap in the suburban scene! Also open to hear if any runners have a positive experiences from the OPRC.

What’s up with the white reflector tubes that Oak Park put up last year when redoing the streets?

I noticed that lots are completely knocked over. Are people doing it on purpose? Or are people accidentally hitting them? They seem to be well and truly broken, so do we think OP will replace them? Give up? Leave them laying there?

Moving locally

Anyone have recs for local movers? Staying within the OP/Forest Park area, essentially a 1 bedroom’s worth of stuff going into a 2nd floor apartment (with kind of weird stairs).
