How to navigate natives walking in the street/bike lanes

It's summer time - I ride a bike around town all the time and every year I see around this time lots of natives wandering in the streets. I've encountered many of them and wondered how people deal with them? They are often in the bike lane, despite there be at least 10 feet of sidewalk on either side of the road and not that many peds.

Does anybody know why they do this? How do we convince them it is not good for them and that we have sidewalks for them to use? Is this a territorial thing? Who has the right of way?

For those that may ask, I always verbally engage them, and those accents are only exported from nyc in this century.

A speech for use at tomorrow's parade

New York City is a city known for its Towns - whether that's Uptown, Downtown, or Midtown

New York City is also known for its Bridges, including the Brooklyn, George Washington, and Kosciuszko

New York City is known for its OGs, whether that's Patrick, Spike, or Hov

And New York City, most importantly, is known for its Hart. The lifeblood of our communities, from Washington Heights to Flushing, from Bed-Stuy to Kingsbridge

But let's not forget, the newest legend in this city's storied history. Finals MVP and King of New York, Jalen Brunson

Make some noise for your 2026 NBA Champions, the New York Knicks

Why are NYer's lining up to buy Trader Joe(R) shopping bags?

I usually shop at 9 AM to avoid the crowds, but today there were throngs purchasing the cloth bags, paying for the privilege to advertise for the store. Is it a status symbol like having a Merkin Bag?

Looking for a space to teach formerly incarcerated people how to refinish furniture

Hi all,

I recently met a retired lawyer who is looking for ways to still meaningfully engage with the city. He is hoping to teach formerly incarcerated people wookworking skills to pass along a skillset that could just be fun, could build confidence, or could be a way to make money.

Here is what he’s looking for:

  • Start date in October
  • Class size of 6
  • Tues and Thurs nights from 6:30-11pm
  • He would provide all equipment
  • Sinks and water to clean up
  • Small space for storing 3 dressers, tools, and supplies

Please let me know if you have any leads or orgs that would be willing to help! Would love to see his vision come to life :)

Bus Driver Closed Back Exit Door Repeatedly On Me

As I was attempting to get off a cross-town bus, of which many people were exiting, I was the last to attempt to get off. In front of me, a woman had the door closed on her twice, before exiting. As I attempted to exit, the door was closed on my arm I held out for fear of being closed in and missing my stop. I looked back into the corridor leading up to the bus as my arm was stuck and yelled “back door!”, only to have the bus driver close the door three more times in quick succession on my arm, then my torso as I tried to get out, and it pressed roughly against my arm to my torso to the point I now have a mark. I’m a young person, I can handle this sort of abuse, but I and nobody else should have to suffer through whatever negligence or abuse that bus driver was inflicting on passengers.

I’ve already reported the bus with the number, time, and stop that it occurred. However, this is not the first time I’ve witnessed drivers closing doors on people, especially the elderly who are much more at risk of serious injury from these things. I am concerned these reports do nothing to deter drivers from this behavior.

Why does this happen, and why is nothing serious done to prevent it?

is NY1 still worth watching for news?

i've been going very analog lately, so i haven't been seeing the news literally whatsoever--my only news source rn is being told things by my friends! so i was wondering if watching NY1 more often could be a good news source.

i like NY1-- my family's from staten island (i'm 20, i still live with my mom when im not @ college), so it's been The News^tm since i was like an infant (rip time warner cable), its existence is very nostalgic for me. & we have spectrum. & whenever we have it on nowadays it seems fine?

but i was wondering if it's fallen off at all as a news source, due to the whole Streaming Service revolution. like, compared to how it might've been 10-15 years ago, is it secretly poorly researched and crappy now? like, it SEEMS fine, but i wanted to see what you guys think. thanks!

Where can I smoke a cigar?

I was wondering where I can enjoy smoking my cigar in the city. If I am correct, smoking is not allowed at any parks? If so, can I just smoke it while walking from block to block?

Atlantic Ave station - Barclays

Attending Bruce Springsteen at Barclays tomorrow night. I've got my train and subway - 4/5 from Grand Central - figured out. I've never been to this station and have heard there are many exits some taking you blocks away. Is it obvious when you exit the subway which exit is for Barclays? Also is Barclays above the station or across the street. Trying not to carry an umbrella. Thanks!

Is gonna be closed for renovation.😭

I am having an existential crisis. What are some other places you're gonna be getting groceries when this trader Joe's is shut?

I just don't have enough bandwidth and resources in my life to figure out a whole new schedule and budget. But I'd love to hear other ideas and recalibrate my grocery experience.
