Now That Brazil Are Out Should FIFA Give Special Dispensation For Vinícius Júnior To Transfer Into The USA Squad?

Seems like this would be a fair way to keep one of the leading players in the tournament.

What do YOU think? Should Trump make the special call?

Best Way To Properly Secure 18mm Plywood Subfloor in Bathroom?

I have some 18mm class 3 plywood to use as a new subfloor in our upstairs bathroom.

I ripped up all the old subfloor some time ago now (which was some kind of tongue and groove plywood I think) and am left with the old floorboards sitting atop the joists.

The floorboards are 25mm, so my plan was just to screw the boards down at some kind of set interval with 4x40mm wood screws (drilling pilot holes through the plywood first)

The bathroom is pretty small - something like 2.2m x 2.2m so I will need to use 2.4x1.2m boards.

So I have two questions here:-

  1. Am I okay just securing these boards into floorboards with these 40mm screws; and if so how far apart should I do so? Or should I be working out where the joists fall as well and putting some longer length screws in at those points?

and

  1. Is there any preferred way of laying the boards, e.g. inline with the floorboards which are already running across the joists. Or should I lay them perpendicular to the floorboards or does it not really matter?

If it doesn't really matter, I also have the question of whether it is better to have the split running across the centre of the room for the side the entrance door is. Or whether the split should go from left to right mid-way across the room, which would mean one full sheet would be in place under where the bath will sit against the opposite wall.

Thanks for reading and for any advice you may be able to give.

Mangled Text Message - How did this change possibly happen?

Me and my partner are both on the Smarty network which I believe piggybacks off Three UK.

Last night on her way home from work she was just asking me re what I fancied for dinner.

I texted:-

>I'm happy with pizza. But if you could just get a reasonable size basic Margherita one from Aldi or Sainsbury's (just a cheap one) and get a little tin of anchovies and some black olives, I'll make it up...

Her replies came back as "Eh?", "Are you unwell?", "Have you been taken over by AI?", etc with me becoming increasingly confused. Anyway, she eventually said I'm going to text back what you sent. And I received this:-

>I'm happy with pizza. But if you could just get a reasonable size basic Margherita one from Aldi or Sainsbury's (just a cheap one) and get a little tin of an of meal planning or what you'd like to do at the weekend. Try not to let it get you down.

😂

Can anyone let me know what's happened here? Has the word "anchovies" triggered some AI takeover half way through my message and caused it to write absolute gibberish?!

Pretty funny in this case and we were laughing looking at it on each others phones afterwards but what if this had been a serious text I was sending to someone and I'd potentially have had no idea it'd done something like this.

Is my phone the problem, the receiving phone or did the network do something to it in transit?

Blueberry Plant Not Looking Too Good

Not sure if anyone will be able to help but this is our blueberry plant's third year.

First year it produced a few berries, second year a few more. This year the plant itself seemed to grow quite a lot and I thought we were going to be on for a first "bumper" harvest.

However the plant health seems to be on the decline - a lot of the leaves have / are drying up and turning brown. The berries themselves seem small, black and shriveling up.

I think the plant is failing but not sure why - It gets a weekly ericaceous feed and watered as well in-between and additionally if particularly hot.

Any ideas what might be wrong with it? More sunshine needed? Less?

Anywhere To Buy The Press & Journal In Edinburgh?

Was in Aberdeen today for daughter's graduation and meant to pick up a copy before we left.

Probably highly unlikely but does anyone know anywhere in Edinburgh which may possibly sell print copies?

I'm thinking possibly at one of the train stations but even then, I'm not sure...

St Machar Cathedral - Covered Headstone?

Visited St Machar Cathedral today and couldn't help but notice this covered headstone at the edge of the path as you go in.

Anyone know the story (it there is one) behind why this appears to have been fully covered? I'm guessing it's probably around a century old - if not more - judging by those around but seems to have been either deliberately covered or maybe the plant was just left to grow like this (although seems unlikely)?

The Worst Pubs Of Edinburgh? Nomination No. 1: Swany's, Causewayside

Evening folks.

I'm wondering if there is any general consensus on what the worst pubs of Edinburgh town would be?

In the past few days I have finally visited Swany's on Ratcliffe Terrace, Causewayside.

I have walked past this pub many, many times over the course of at least two decades wondering to myself how it even exists. It's literally right across the road from The Old Bell, which is one of the best pubs in Edinburgh. A few doors down is the John Leslie (the pub, not the shamed local "celebrity" and brother of Edinburgh Panto Legend Grant Stott) which is another fantastic pub. Also, not much further up the road, is Brass Monkey - another terrific pub with great beers and passable bar food.

So my querying of this pub has generally been one of bewilderment re how it keeps going, who's actually going in it, rather than anything negative.

Anyways, through a series of events, the stars finally aligned and after 20+ years I landed up having a pint in Swany's... And it was pretty terrible. Perhaps the driving force was the incredibly disgusting stench wafting in the front door from Milton Fry (probably the most disgusting smelling fish and chip shop in the city). Can't really blame the pub for that but sitting in there on a scorching hot night, among the handful of what I presume was their regulars (vocally spouting off anti English sentiment), with the smell of reused, burnt cooking oil hanging thick in the air was pretty grim...

Anyway, that's my choice - I guess the other contenders in my area would be The Grapes on Clerk St - which always seems to have some "characters" outside it but, to be fair, maybe it's actually okay inside with a friendly vibe? No idea... Or that weird pub across the road from the old Odeon - also Clerk St - which I don't think has ever been ripped out and remodeled in my entire life (simply painted over time and time again). That one just looks crap. But I don't think I've ever been in there either, so maybe my view on that place is wrong...

Anyway, what would YOU vote for? What do you consider to be among the worst pubs of Edinburgh and why?

Braga Wants To Stay!

>He said: “I’m about to fulfil one of my biggest dreams. Just knowing it’s possible to play in the Champions League is incredible, even if it’s only a qualifier.

>“We’re facing a very strong team in Sturm Graz, but at Tynecastle we’re very strong as well. We proved that last season.

>“We’ve lost some players, that’s true, but we’re strengthening the squad. At home, anything can happen. Away from home we’ll give everything, but above all we want to enjoy the opportunity, shine and take this club into the league phase.”

(Full interview details in a Sun article but links not allowed here)

Personally I'd be very happy to see Braga stay.

Unfortunately, I'm not sure if the club already has him out the door and has used his sale money in advance for the next round of signings!

I guess we'll see soon enough but my feel was that it would be crazy to bin almost the entire team which got us on the edge of the Champions League before we even play the qualifier!

Ideal outcome for me would be for him to stay with a contract extension.

Clarke Had Six Months To Prepare For These Teams We'd Be Facing

I appreciate that there's already been one or two threads pointing out just how poor Steve Clarke has been for Scotland in this tournament.

But I just wanted to focus on something which I don't think has had enough attention among the general kick up the arses he's been getting and it's this:-

The guy has had six months specifically to prepare for this, to think of a system / set-up which would best work for the players we have, against the sides we were going to go up against.

I saw little to zero evidence he had a clue what he was going to do.

He changed formation every game. He picked Shankland to start two games even although he'd never bothered with him before and put him in set-ups which pretty much guaranteed he had no chance. He didn't work out where McGinn was going to fit in and be effective if he was going to play Gammon-Doak. He didn't have a set-up to bring out the best in McTominay. He picked Gordon for the send off game but then just binned him. What was the point? The defence was always going to be a problem but he had no clear idea there either obviously by switching his centre half two games in...

I mean, completely different ball game and resources but look at the classic Klopp Liverpool set-up. They played EXACTLY the same formation all the time and everyone knew there job in it. Even that cup final when half the side was out injured, he just swapped the kids in seemlessly and the machine kept rolling...

Now, like I said, completely different as far as Scotland are concerned but given our limitations, couldn't we have had some kind of system set in stone long before a ball was even kicked here that all the players knew and were comfortable playing?

To be fair maybe there was and that was our hoof-ball to Dykes and Adams? If so, why did he change it? Sure to be fair, the clamber was there for change but if HE - the manager - didn't believe in it / couldn't work out how to play differently, he shouldn't have bothered.

Cape Verde Approach Vs Steve Clarke Approach

Quite depressing in a way watching Cape Verde last night and looking back on the Morocco game.

Undoubtedly we'll set up in the same way, if not even more negatively, against Brazil. And really, you couldn't even blame Clarke for doing so against Brazil who - despite maybe not currently being at their glorious best - could still potentially give us a hammering.

Same in a way with Morocco. Still a very strong team, ranked highly in the world and who knows - maybe if we had set up and bit more positively, they'd have hammered us.

But still... Watching Cape Verde actually going for it last night, not being afraid to attack and to attack quickly, with some seeming kind of plan to do so transitioning quickly through the midfield just left me wondering:- What really was the value in Scotland getting here?

Was watching us scrape over the line versus Haiti and following that up with two contained, hopefully not get hammered performances just to reach a knock out game - which could land up being against Germany (!) even worth it? And if not Germany, it could be Mexico in their own back, where we'll be set up to...er, not get hammered!

So will that have been worth it if that's what comes to pass?

Wouldn't it have been better for Clarke to accept that we have a midfield with some actually pretty good players in it this time and build up, playing through it, rather than hoofing the ball OVER it?

I don't know... What do YOU think? Is he right to set us up to not get hammered and maybe make it through the group stage? Or do you too think - well what's the point, shouldn't we actually have tried to just play some football and show the world we have team would could be proud of?

Steam Brew IPA

Any other fans of this?

Tbh I only bought it in the first place because I thought the guy on the can was a dead ringer for Dennis Reynolds of Only Sunny In Philadelphia but it's actually great stuff!

Always chuck a couple of cans in now whenever we visit a Lidl...

What Happened To The "Bum" Statue?

Just inside the entrance to Princes Street Gardens on the King's Stables Road side there used to be a statue of this dog called "Bum".

He was like the US cousin of Greyfriars Bobby I guess. Can't remember the exact details but maybe he was San Diego based...

Anyway, this is where he used to be but now he has gone! Who knows, ain't been this way for some time so potentially he's been gone for a while now...

Anyone know what happened?

Why Don't Single Round-Robin Events Not Invite Odd Number Of Players?

I was just looking at the pairings for the Uzchess Cup, which is currently underway, and noticed that once again you have some players having five games with the white pieces, some only four.

Couldn't they just invite an odd number to these events, e.g. nine or eleven, to ensure everyone got an even number of games with the white / black pieces?

I mean, maybe they do (?) but it just seems to me every time I see these single round robin events it's set up like this.

Band Playing At Meadows Festival This Afternoon

Just wondering if anyone knows the name or any info re the band that was playing at the Meadows festival this afternoon at ~ 1:45 at the stage on the Melville Drive side?

Kind of weird because I've been going there for years and the bands have always been somewhat in the background for me, never really finding them to be particularly special (no offense!).

Anyway, I was drawn in from hearing these guys from quite far away and found myself wandering over to listen to them closer... The singer mentioned the song they were playing was an original composition of theirs which should have been available on streaming but their credit card had been declined trying to pay for it being put on whatever service they were trying to use! 😂

Anyway, if anyone can "name that band" I'd love to know and maybe find that song streaming somewhere in future!

The Other Angle Of Celtic's Cheated Penalty Vs Motherwell

It's been nearly a week now since the VAR review footage was made available for the infamous Motherwell Vs Celtic penalty decision.

Before this additional footage was released all discussion had centred on whether a "clear and obvious" error could have realistically been called, given it was impossible to say - given the 3D perspective we were looking at it from.

However the new footage at ~ 1:18, which is said to be getting used to check the throw in, rolls on and shows us the header from the angle everyone wanted to see in the first place and was presumed not to exist, i.e. right in front of the players!

If you watch this it quite clearly shows the defender cleanly heading the ball away - his left hand, which was used in the stills from the non conclusive angle - visibly no where near the ball!!

Now the VAR team totally ignored this angle, did not make it available to the referee, whilst verbally directing him that there had been a handball. Why have a seen so little coverage / media attention around this second angle?

It's hilarious - I have actually seen some Celtic fans edits pop up on YouTube and they've actually REMOVED this camera angle as it's clear as day there was no handball. But yet, I've seen very little of this - Not even an edited down clip of this other angle...

What's The Story With That House At Top Of Observatory Road?

Bit weird this - Was taking a walk over Blackford Hill for the first time in a good few years I guess and I came down on the Observatory Road side.

At the top on the left hand side there's this modern design new build which went up a few years ago and must have raised a few eyebrows / objections at the planning stage as it's nothing like anything else on that road plus totally overlooks the public walking area at the bottom of where the actual observatory is...

Anyway, walked past it tonight and it pretty much looks abandoned! Surely it can't be - but the front garden side is all totally overgrown, massive weeds, etc and pretty much all overgrown even around the door. Looks like these reclaimed by nature buildings you'd see in some apocalyptic movie!

Anyway, what's the story? Anyone know?

Wisteria Has Now Peaked!

Posted a pic previously but I think this is now at its absolute best!

Plus, can anyone tell me - How far can these things spread?

You might be able to see a couple of extra flowers peaking through on the left hand side but the thing is I've got even more coming through, wrapped in among a rhododendron about 5m I guess along to the left (see second photo).

The wisteria was here when we moved in, so I've no idea if it's one plant which has worked itself right along, wrapping around the other bushes on the way, or whether there are two plants here. It looks great but I'm not sure if it's bad for the other plants if it has worked it's way along and whether I should cut it back?

Lucas Zanetti Still Going Strong At 90!

First posted about Lucas when I noticed he was still going at what was now the relatively "spritely" age of 70. Twenty years on, here he is still going strong!

Stamina, strength, pace & agility not great which is fair enough I guess 😆

He's been on a rolling contract now for 20+ years. Announces every year he's retiring at the end of the season but just plays on...

Can he make to 100 still playing?

Is "Big" Tom Tomato Planter Not So Big This Year?!!

This is weird! Just sorted out the tomato grow house this afternoon ahead of getting them out. Grabbed my Big Tom planter bag out of the shed, dropped it in position and thought - Hang on, this is smaller than previous years!

So if you look at photo 2, you can see Big Tom 2024. The bag used to go right into the corners! The bag's got to be 4/5" narrower...
