How to read the Minor Arcana by using the meanings of the Major Arcana

I found this post on Aecletic Tarot, it explains how to read the Minor Arcana by using the meanings of the Major Arcana. By using this method, you can read each and every tarot.

It was taken from the Marseille de Tarot section, so I thought you might find this helpful for your studies.

"In my never-ending quest to find a way to read non-illustrated-pip decks that works for me, I was really having difficulties, because I want to read with them but I also want to read with illustrated decks, and I don’t want to have to use completely different meanings for each type. Also, I don’t want to depend on the pictorial details of Marseilles pips because I also want to read with other non-illustrated-pip decks such as the Ancient Italian, Ancient Lombardy, and Prediction. That means I need some type of suit+number scheme. But I find that I need to have each card presenting a particular personality, rather than just a generic suit+number.

So, each pip meaning is derived from the suit meaning plus the number meaning, and also relates to the RWS picture. The one-word keywords after the Major titles aren’t meant to suggest that one should interpret the Majors using only those keywords, but merely to point out which aspect of the Major card is being used to correlate with the pip cards.

4 Coins: Concretization of material success

V Pope – Belief systems/mental maps
5 Batons: Being fully invested in one’s belief systems concerning creative goals, despite conflicts with others
5 Cups: Being fully invested in one’s belief systems concerning emotions, despite relationships which don’t work out
5 Swords: Being fully invested in mental machinations/competitions, despite the pain caused to self and others
5 Coins: Being fully invested in belief systems concerning the value of material success, despite the evidence of reality

VI Lovers – Choice (specifically, the tendency of the mind to make distinctions, narrow possibilities and express preferences)

7 Swords: Congratulating oneself on one’s cleverness in pulling off a coup, while unaware that mental paradigms are clashing, and the self-satisfaction will be short-lived

IX Hermit – Isolation
9 Batons: “Me against the world” attitude
9 Cups: Emotionally satisfying oneself (perhaps selfishly)
9 Swords: Loneliness
9 Coins: Pride in one’s material successes

X Wheel of Fortune – Logical conclusion/end of cycle
10 Batons: Logical conclusion of creative endeavors – becomes tiresome and burdensome
10 Cups: Logical conclusion of deep expression of feelings – establishment of family (i.e. any group of people who are family to each other)
10 Swords: Logical conclusion of mental machinations as they conflict with reality
10 Coins: Logical conclusion of thorough material preparation

-- Lee

It's inevitable that any effort of this type will fall short of perfection, since the RWS pictures don't fit neatly into a suit+number pattern. But it may be possible to construct something along these lines that will serve."

Scavenger Hunt! 🐳

Let’s practise spotting patterns in your deck, because it's an easy way to tune into the visual language of your cards.

The task:
Look through your deck (or shuffle and cut) and find the first card that features something blue 📘and tell us:

  1. which card it is.
  2. what the blue element is (water, sky, clothing?).
  3. one word that comes to mind when you see it.

Why blue?
In tarot, blue often signals intuition, calm, communication, or depth. The specific blue detail your eye catches first reflects where your mind is currently seeking stillness or understanding.

No deck?
No problem, just take a look around. What is the first blue thing you see? How does that object feel to you right now?

Happy readings, y'all 💙

Welcome to the Workshop

We’re about to hit 5.5k members. Time for an update. 😅
This is a space for people who want to move past the basics and actually practise.

The Mods

  • u/Fortune_Box: I have been reading the tarot since 1987. I used to read semi-professionally, but it nearly killed my love for tarot. Now I mainly enjoy the beauty of the tarot, the archetypes, and hosting exchanges.
  • u/PleasantCut615 (Cat): I learned tarot during a dark time. It saved my sanity. I am happy to be here and help keep the sub grounded.

What we do
This is a learning sub. We talk about tarot and encourage everybody to begin their journey into the tarot.

  • Reading Exchanges: This is the heart of the community. You practise and get feedback.
  • Mini-Games: Small ways to test your intuition.
  • Resources: Decks, spreads, and guides.

The rules

  • No readings in DM: Everything happening in the comments helps everyone to benefit from the insights.
  • No ads or scammers. We mean it.
  • Be specific: If you ask a vague question, you get a vague answer.

How to Start

  1. Say Hello. Tell us how long you have read and what you are looking for.
  2. Check the 'Beginners, read this first' post. The answers are often already there.
  3. Join an Exchange or a game. The best way to learn is to practise (coming from a person who finds it difficult to learn from books).

Thank you for helping us to keep this a place for exchanges and games.

Happy readings, y'all 🧡

Some days, first impressions are everything.

Pull one card.

What is your initial reaction?
☀️ Hell yes
❄️ No thanks
🌫️ Not sure yet

Post:

  • Card name + your symbol (☀️/❄️/🌫️)
  • One sentence about the feeling behind the reaction (not the meaning).

The truce of the Four of Swords 🏳️

There’s a kind of erosion that comes from holding something sacred in a space that keeps asking you to perform it.

Modding keeps me tethered to tarot, but reading feels distant now. Not because I’ve lost it, but because what many people seek (validation, motivation) doesn't align with how I hold the cards.

It’s unsettling. Not reading feels like losing a limb, yet forcing it feels like breaking one.
The friction between inner truth and external expectation. This quiet season isn’t procrastination, but a truce.

I don’t have a fix. Just this: sometimes the most honest thing is to stop feeling obliged to translate knowing into content. To lie down and let the silence do the work.

If you’re here and it feels heavy, you’re not broken.
Maybe you’re invited to sheath your sword and sign a peace treaty with yourself.

Scavenger hunt! 🍎

Let’s practise spotting patterns in your deck, because it is an easy way to tune into the visual language of your cards.

The task:
Look through your deck (or shuffle and cut) and find the first card that shows something red 🏮
and share with us

  1. which card it is.
  2. what the red element is (a rose, a cloak, a sunset?).
  3. one word that comes to mind when you see it.

Why red?
In tarot, red often signals action, passion, warning, or vitality. Seeing what your eye catches first can tell you what energy is currently loud in your life.

No deck?
No problem. Just take a look around - what is the first red thing you see?
How does that object feel to you right now?

A cheat sheet for busy readers and 10 open-ended questions to inspire querents

Here's my personal Top Ten of Recurring Questions ... and how to read them.

>I think many times querents may not examine the underlying emotions behind their questions, because looking deeper into themselves either frightens them, or they have very little experience with viewing things beneath the surface. It's a lot easier for a client to ask a reader a somewhat superficial question, than it is to face an unspoken fear, (or possibly guilt,) that it was some action on their part that caused the problem in the first place.
Taken from a comment written by TurbulentAsparagus32

Querents, if you have trouble wording your question, you can find a list of open-ended alternatives further down.

A reminder for busy readers:
Most questions about "them" are actually questions about safety, self-worth, and certainty. If you address that underlying layer, the reading becomes far more useful than attempting to describe the private feelings or thoughts of a third person.

Surface question in normal font, underlying feeling in italics.

  • How do they feel about me? I want to know that I matter.
  • Will they come back? I'm not ready to let go and I'm afraid it's over.
  • Are they my soulmate or twin flame? I want this relationship to feel special and meant to be.
  • Why are they pulling away? I'm worried they don't want me.
  • Do they miss me? I want to know if I still matter to them.
  • Is there someone else? I'm afraid of being replaced.
  • Will we be in a relationship? I want clarity because I feel stuck.
  • Should I reach out first? I'm afraid of rejection but don't want to lose the connection.
  • What are their true intentions? I'm not sure I can trust what I'm seeing.
  • When will I meet someone? I feel lonely and worry that love won't come.

***

Reframing for Insight

The following questions shift the focus from predicting the future to empowering your present choices. They invite deeper insight rather than simple yes/no reassurance:

  • What is the baseline of this dynamic?
  • What would help me feel safe and respected in this relationship?
  • What feels healthy and supportive about this dynamic?
  • What does their behavior tell me about the reality of our connection?
  • Why do I need to know if they miss me right now?
  • Why am I struggling to trust, and what would help me feel more secure?
  • Where is the imbalance in our efforts?
  • Why do I want to contact them right now, and what outcome am I hoping for?
  • How do their words and actions align (or contradict)?
  • What can I focus on in my own life to feel fulfilled, regardless of what happens with this relationship?

These questions slow down the loop because they move the focus from chasing hidden feelings to understanding lived experience and personal needs. However, sometimes the most empowering thing your querent can do is to ask "Why am I chasing this?" before running any further.

***

Additional purely action-driven questions

These assume the querent is ready to hop into the driver's seat.

Note: these are step 2 questions, which work best when the foundation is already stable. If they are in a toxic dynamic or chasing a ghost, asking "what do I need to say" might just pour more energy into a black hole.

  • How can I build the relationship I want with this person?
  • What do I need to say?
  • What do I need to stop tolerating?
  • What is something I can do today?
  • What support do I need to build this?

Happy readings, y'all 🧡

What you need to fix it - your oracle for August 2026

Welcome to another oracle.
Hidden in the grid are names of various professions. The premise: the skills needed for the profession work as a lens when dealing with your current situation.

The meanings are literal. We all know what a carpenter or architect does. The work here is applying that concrete role to your abstract problem. It requires a bit of lateral thinking.

How this relates to Tarot:
Think of the letter box as a complex spread. The letters are visual noise. Finding the words is like spotting patterns (suits, numbers, colours, etc.) in a shuffle. The words that jump out at you are the keywords for your reading.

A note on interpretation:
Please share your own take first. I’m here to facilitate discussion, not to provide definitive answers. Tell us what resonates with you before asking what it ‘means’.

I hope you find something useful.

PS: Reddit resized the image on upload, so some letters are blurred. Note that what looks like an 8 is actually the letter S.

Hot or Cold?

Some days the first impression is the only one that matters.

No deep soul-searching today.
Turn over a single card and only notice how it makes you feel.

Without thinking:
🔥 Hell yes.
🧊 No thanks.

Don't reach for the meanings just yet because your instinct has already joined the conversation.

Then ask yourself why was that your first reaction?

That's the whole game.

Happy readings, y'all 💜

Welcome to r/ExploringTarot 🎇

Hey there!
We just hit 5,1k members, so it might be a good time for an introduction. This is our place for all things related to tarot and divination. We're excited to have you join us!

I'm u/Fortune_Box, one of the moderators of r/ExploringTarot. I've been reading the tarot since 1987 and I'm kinda obsessed with it. The other mod is u/PleasantCut615. This is her introduction:
I am Cat. Learned tarot several years ago during a very dark time and I can say that it saves my sanity.

Somehow I stepped on this sub and liked its vibe and Fortune Box that adopted it made me a mod. I am happy to be part of it and contribute.

We do have resources, mini games and practice posts, please feel free to check the respective flairs. We also launch from time to time reading exchanges posts for readers to practice and get feedback.

What to Post
