Are These Anything Special?

I purchased a sleeve of negatives labeled "Cars" in a thrift/junk store in Portland, OR for .25 cents. The lot ended up being comprised of two distinct rolls of b&w Kodak Plus x Pan Film. One roll was shot at Half Moon Bay Drag Strip, the other at Fremont Drag Strip around 1965~

Through my little bits of googling it appears some of these cars/racers could be well known, or favorable to somebody. I was especially intrigued by my discovery of Shirley Shahan through these photographs, and I believe she can be seen in the background of the photo of the men talking.

In total there's about 50 photographs (including one odd one out of a baby in a bouncer in a nursery that was in the middle of a negative strip). I'm not sure if there's somebody, or some organization or something that would appreciate seeing/having these images. If anybody has any insight it would be greatly appreciated!

Huell Howser Visits Livermore (c. 2009)

Anyone else grow up with Huell Howser/California’s Gold on in the background? (Also perhaps the more locally relevant Bay Area Backroads with Doug McConnell)

I was pleased to discover that he visited us around 2009 to see the Centennial Light.

Always remember to look up!

What have you seen growing in the canopy of your palms? In the SF Bay Area I frequently spot Coast Live Oaks sprouting, but this large fig made me stop and chuckle. Also, there is either some sort of acacia, or olive, but it was hard for me to key out at a distance. Both are planted near by.

Help with young mango

Hello, I am a first time mango grower located in CA zone 9b.

Does anyone know what may be causing this leaf distortion on my young Ice cream mango? When the flush first emerged they were really happy but then one day they started to turn red and curl.

I moved it into my green house for a little protection while I sort out next steps.

I appreciate any advice you have on diagnosis/how to avoid in the future.

Many thanks!

Mexican Blue Palm?

Is this a Mexican Blue Palm? I’m not too familiar with the species but this tree catches my eye often.

Alameda County, CA (zone 9b)

Niles “Palm Oasis”

Here is a grove of fan palms off of Mission Blvd near Mayhews Rd. I refer to this grove as the Niles “Palm Oasis”. The concentration of palms here indicates there is likely an abundance of groundwater below.

Unpopular opinion: While I acknowledge that this is the definition of a species behaving invasively I do appreciate the aesthetic spectacle it creates.

Does anyone know the history of this parcel? Were the parent trees planted there, or nearby perhaps, intentionally? Is this plot related to the nearby CA Nursery?

Palms in Northern Latitudes?

Reposting as the text got chopped.

I spotted these two Canary palms in Arcata, CA last month when visiting redwood country. It got me pondering how far north I’ve seen palms growing. These two are at roughly 40*N.

Admittedly I don’t travel much, but have been to Vancouver BC & Alaska some years ago, but I do not remember for certain if I saw any palms on that trip.

How far north have you encountered palms?

Valley Oak (SF Bay Area)

Sharing a tree that caught my eye on a walk this morning. Here is a beautiful, yet understated Valley Oak (Quercus lobata) in the drier suburbs of the San Francisco Bay Area. Not my tree, just wanted to share.

It is a dream of mine to one day own a home with a tree in the yard that absolutely dwarves my dwelling (as I assume is true of may people in this sub)

Jacarandas in bloom

Now is a great time to spot Jacaranda trees (Jacaranda mimosifolia) throughout our city. Be on the look out for the bluish, purply flowers blooming all over!

While the flowers are the showstopper—I think they even look nice littered beneath the tree—the delicate, fern-like leaves deserve a closer look too.

Native to seasonally dry tropics of South America this tree has made itself right at home with our mediterranean climate.

Bay Street in the Irvington District is lined with these beautiful trees for several blocks, creating a dramatic effect this time of year.

You can also find several planted along Walnut near the Paragon Apartments, and elsewhere nearby in Downtown Fremont.

Where else have you seen Jacarandas in Fremont?
