First time

I was distracted and this happened. This mf always gets destroyed by the Old Country, but to think that it won so hard while I was playing as VC is so funny.

On the world of Deadlock

I would like to start by saying that in the world of Deadlock, authoritarianism and totalitarianism are not just dreams, but a reality.

The biggest change in the world of Deadlock happened when the Maelstrom occurred in the year 1900. The supernatural is much older than that; we know now that vampires have been around for centuries and that the supernatural always existed, but not on a massive scale like after the Maelstrom, according to Warden’s lore. We also know that the Age of Empires never truly ended, because all of the world wars and many conflicts were prevented thanks to oracles. We know this because of Wrecker’s backstory:

“When the Maelstrom first hit New York, it didn’t just usher in a new age of mysticism to the world… it changed geopolitics. From CIA-employed seers identifying threats decades before they rise to power, to occult pacts made in smoky backrooms, countless wars and atrocities have been prevented that would otherwise have shaped history.”

Oracles in the world of Deadlock can basically see the future. We don’t know how they work or how much power one needs to see the future. We do know that Doorman can see five years into the future, so we don’t know how far ahead other oracles can see.

We also know that the Russian Empire fell during this time and became the Soviet Empire, and that Catherine the Great probably overthrew the Romanovs thanks to Raven’s backstory.

Then the Vatican gained power during this time. Before the Maelstrom, the Vatican had no sovereignty and the Pope declared himself a “prisoner of the Vatican,” so something equivalent to the Lateran Pacts must have happened. After that, the Vatican began sending people around the world to hunt supernatural monsters.

The USA gained two new states: South Ixian and Cadenza, an artificial island created by Fairfax. The USA is obviously the country in which Deadlock takes place, but it is actually kind of a mess in this timeline. Supernatural beasts became so common that organizations like the Baxter Society exist to hunt them. If the state deems you a threat to national security, they send the OSIC to kill you before you can do harm, or they simply send the CIA to kill you if you’re not a supernatural threat.

We also know that vampires hold some degree of power in the USA, as they are a protected species and hold titles like the Viscount of New York.

The Friends of Humanity in Deadlock are hard to equate to any real-life group. From Vindicta’s words, they are a “neo-Inquisition” and a “neo-political” group, which simply means “new.” The Friends of Humanity are not considered a threat to national security at this point, and we know this because of the lack of concern from people like Haze. We also know that Vindicta’s wish is not to destroy the Friends of Humanity entirely; she only wants to kill Hathorne. However, doing so would likely make things worse by galvanizing the group.

I personally like to say that the FoH are similar to the first or second Klan. We don’t know if they are spread across the nation or, like the first Klan, are mostly concentrated around supernatural-heavy areas. They are human supremacists who terrorize supernatural beings like Ixians. In the process, they kill Gray Talon’s son and daughter-in-law along with his grandchildren, gaining yet another enemy. We also know from the New York Oracle that anti-occult sentiment is on the rise, so Vindicta’s actions are only going to make things worse.

The supernatural beings of Deadlock are interesting. We know that in the USA, vampires are a protected species, while in other parts of the world they are hunted by Venators. Vampires predate the USA by centuries, as confirmed by Drifter’s dialogue about New Amsterdam (the old name of New York). Almost all vampires are wealthy, except for Drifter, of course.

Ixians are demon-like beings who hate the term “demon” because it is derogatory. They come from the extraplanar dimension of Ixia and exist in different colors. Most of them can control fire, if we go by Gray Talon’s backstory. They face a certain degree of discrimination in the world of Deadlock.

Werewolves are another case. We know that the lycan curse can be transmitted and that you can be born with it, thanks to conversations between Graves and Silver. We also know that they are hunted, and that silver is, as always, their weakness. Eating werewolf meat is apparently a new thing that there is an open question about whether it counts as cannibalism, according to the New York Oracle:

“Is eating werewolf meat cannibalism? We asked some of New York’s elite chefs to get their take on the new dining trend that’s taking Paris by storm.”

Unicorns, they're real and they get hunted so much that celested has to hide her true identity and obnoxious enought for haze to say in a tired way: "unicorns"

Militant alchemists are basically the preppers of this world, except that Warden is essentially the Batman of this setting.

This world is a mess. The old empires still exist, wielding artifacts that can see into the future with ease, and organizations that can kill you before you even do harm. Supernatural beings are hunted and in the case of werewolves, eaten by French people. Necromancers and liches exist, and worst of all, souls are treated as a form of energy or currency, thanks to a 15-year-old who “created a machine that refined the souls of the dead.”

Sorry yurifans, this girl likes her fanfics with bionic heores and bad boys

I once read, I don't know if it was here or somewhere else, and I quote: "Paige is so violently straight that she didn't get the flirting from Vyper." and she probably more of a yaoi fan than a yuri fan.

Of course, only when you don't find people or rats that are actively looking for people to kill and take their loot.
