Great Blue Herons -

Here is a few shots from around the area. Best location is always Jordan lake tailrace in Moncure after some heavy rains. Herons put on a show. 20-30 of them lined up on either side.

Bynum Bridge Pittsboro is absolutely popping

Old bynum bridge continues to get its spring migration visitors, in spite of the devastating floods from Hurrican Helene last July. Absolutely popping and Tanagers are all over the place. Do visit mornings during the weekend and the birders are thronging the place.

EDIT; I incorrectly tagged the first two as Summer tanagers - they are scarlett tanagers

Patient Barred owl

This barred owl dad landed 10 ft away from a bridge and then stayed for a good 20 minutes, so close to 3 screaming kids and 2 adults, totally unfazed by our presence

Prob the closest owl interaction I have ever had.

It is Barred owl time in most trails and parks, esp if there are streams nearby. Chicks are emerging from the nest and fledging.

Dad, Mom and 3 chicks. He fed the snake to one of the babies. Once they have fledged, babies all sit in separate spots. I guess this is for the parents to figure out which one is fed and which one is not. During this phase, parents bring smaller prey to the babies.

Once they grow up, they hang around closer as parents bring in bigger prey and they now have skills to tear up the squirrel/rabbit.

Shot at 600mm and cropped
