Ethernet can communicate over the network but cannot reach the internet.
My self-built PC running both Windows 11 and Bazzite Linux has, in the last 2 weeks, been unable to use ethernet to connect to the internet. I am less concerned about Linux reconnecting, so have been focusing my troubleshooting on Windows.
This is what I've done so far trying to fix this:
- Power cycled my PC
- Power cycled my router
- Performed a full network reset
- Reinstalled drivers, and then updated to newer versions
- Disabled and re-enabled the LAN port in the BIOS
- Tested the connection with another laptop (it didn't work)
- Changed the cables from the router to the wall adapter, and the wall to my PC
- Changed which port the cable is connected to on the router
- Tested the connection with another laptop again, but only for half a minute (strangely, it worked this time)
- Manually set an IPV4 address, mask, and gateway on my computer
- Manually reserved my IP address on the router end over both wireless and wired connections to my PC, using the same IP for wired as manually set
- Performed a partial reinstall of Windows through 'Recovery > Fix using Windows Update'
- Performed a full network reset again
- Waited to see if automatic settings would work (they didn't)
- Manually set the IPV4 settings again
Other info that may be helpful:
- The lights on the ethernet port look fine (one solid, one blinking)
- The dual-boot OS setup has given me zero issues in 2 months up until this point
- The only other device using ethernet is my home server which can access the internet with no issues (it also has a fixed IP address)
- The ethernet adapter on my PC is a "Realtek PCIe 2.5GbE Family Controller"
- The Wi-Fi adaptor is an "Intel Wi-Fi 6 AX200 160MHz"
- The motherboard is an MSI MPG B550I Gaming Edge WIFI
- Other hardware is AMD (not likely useful but here just in case)
- I am unaware what the server is using
- My ethernet connection does not/can not use IPV6
- My PC appears in the device list on the router under both Wireless and Wired connections
The only progress I have made is that, originally, I was unable to connect to the network either and communicate with my home server for example. The thing that fixed this was manually setting the address, etc., on the Windows end. The ethernet also reports the SSID of the network again, but only after connecting to it over wireless.
I now have a new issue where whenever my ethernet cable is plugged in, nothing that requires internet will function correctly, despite having a perfectly stable connection to the internet over Wi-Fi. Unplugging the cable allows me to use the internet normally. It's like Windows is now trying to default to ethernet even though it has no internet.
My father is convinced that this is a software configuration issue on my end. I disagree given that I have changed so much, and that this issue is occurring on two separate operating systems that have been working fine until this point. I may be wrong and I am ready to accept that, but I feel like if it was a config issue I would have solved it by now.
I did make a post about this a few days ago, but eventually all of the edits added up and people weren't always seeing them if they'd already started a comment chain with me. I want to thank the people who helped me before, but now I am REALLY stuck. I don't know where to go from here trying to solve this.
Ethernet unable to connect to the internet.
My self-built PC running both Windows 11 and Bazzite Linux has, in the last week, been unable to use ethernet at all. In Windows in the "Get Help" app I receive "No DCHP server was found," in Control Panel I can see the status of the ethernet as "No Internet access", though it seems to be connected to the network as IPV6 (which the ethernet does not use, to my knowledge) shows as "No network access".
In Bazzite, I went through an extensive command-line diagnosis process before trying to diagnose it on Windows. Both diagnoses seem to point towards the router being faulty and failing to give me an IP address, but apparently my housemate has managed to get their laptop working over ethernet when connected to the same cable in my room. I am double checking this as I am doubtful their laptop wasn't just using Wi-Fi, as they didn't turn it off to confirm. Confirmed it was working through ethernet, albeit it was only tested for about a minute.
I have power cycled my router and PC, performed a partial and a full network reset on Windows, reinstalled drivers, disabled and re-enabled the LAN port in the BIOS, manually set an IP address in Windows, all to no avail. I have tried more but I can't recall it all right now, though if you asked I'd probably remember. The only thing I haven't tried as far as I can tell is reinstalling either OS, and I would rather not try this anyway. Given that this issue is occurring on both Windows and Linux, I doubt that would fix anything.
The dual-boot setup has not given me a single issue in the 2 months I had Bazzite installed prior to this.
The lights on the port look fine (one solid, one blinking), the control panel's "Ethernet status" tells me it is somehow receiving and sending data packets at 1gb/s, and the cables are all relatively new. The sockets in the wall are barely half a year old, if that.
I am sick of this issue plaguing the back of my mind and just want it solved. I can't tell if this is a hardware or firmware issue on my end, or if it is an issue with the router. Does anyone have even the wildest of ideas what I can do to solve it?
EDIT: I should note that the ethernet adapter is a Realtek PCIe 2.5GbE Family Controller. Just for reference if that helps.
EDIT 2: The only other device on ethernet in my house is a home server with a few HDDs used for long-term storage. This has a fixed IP address set in the router config page.
sleep texted a friend a few nights ago.
i find it especially funny because the first message sprung from a post on r/Ambien that i saw on a Matt Rose video, and then somehow wove its way into my unconscious ramble.
Has this room always just been broken?
Screenshots attached.
Infrequently, I come across this room in Crystal Hunt which has no exit and no path forward. If I go to the far left corner opposite the bookshelf, I can hear a door moving about as if constantly clipping with terrain. Every time it generates I have to restart the level with a new seed as there is just no other way forward.
Is this room just a bugged room that hasn't been removed or fixed yet? I've seen it ever since I started playing again in the 1.0 update. I can't speak for earlier dungeon builds like U12 as I stopped playing VR between U8 and the 1.0 release.
also damn what's with the red and green shadows in the screenshots lol
How do I increase the amount of time the grub menu is visible for?
i’ve been digging around trying to find an answer but none of the posts are very clear to me (likely due to my lack of knowledge surrounding how to use the nano terminal command). can anyone explain to me in clear terms how i do this? i’ve found many telling me to edit /boot/grub2/user.cfg (of which the file doesn’t exist), or /etc/default/grub, and i have no idea which one i should be editing nor how to edit them.
can i have some help? i’m doing this because sometimes i want to boot windows instead and i’m not quick enough to get into my BIOS boot menu and want the grub menu there longer so i can stop it booting Bazzite.
How do I stop the "unsupported filesystem" notification popping up every single time I plug in my exFAT drive?
For context, I use an exFAT external drive for storing data between my Mac and PC, the latter of which runs both Windows and Linux depending on my needs. exFAT is a universal filesystem that all OSes are supposed to be able to read fine, yet Bazzite seems to really dislike it...
How do I stop this notification popping up, or at least stop it from being persistent until manually closed, every time I mount the drive?
As per my last post, I tried DaVinci Resolve. I am having issues.
It fails to read any of my video files, all of which open perfectly in VLC and were fully usable in Final Cut on Mac. By this I mean that it sees the files but fails to pull any audio or video from them, and yes I have checked the codecs to make sure they work, and even put my most recent recording (which wasn't in a readable codec and did not even show up in the in-app media browser) through Handbrake to re-encode it, and still, nothing.
I have even tried putting a file through FCP and re-rendering it to H.264 and AAC in MP4 format, all of which DaVinci is supposed to be able to use no-problem, but it seems incapable of doing anything.
I am running Bazzite on AMD hardware. Installing DaVinci was done by downloading their Linux ZIP and running a ujust script that gets Bazzite to install the whole app for you in a container with all of the dependencies. I have a feeling this may not have worked correctly but I am here to check.
This has been crossposted to r/Bazzite aswell.
I have just found this: https://universal-blue.discourse.group/t/davinci-resolve-setup-guide/1197 which might be a more reliable way to get it working. I will test this while this post is up.
EDIT: The above page didn't help, though I have a feeling it just did the exact same thing as the script log looked very similar. The Bazzite script was just a simpler specific version.
EDIT 2: yup, just noticed that the page has a notice mentioning the command I used initially.
EDIT 3: Just realised that apparently DaVinci on Linux does NOT support H.264 or H.265, nor AAC. So I went on a bit of a hunt figuring out exactly what I could use and ended up using PCM audio with AV1 video. OBS can't do software encoding without making the video look like ass, and since the hardware encoding is stuck to H.264/5, I guess I'm stuck with re-encoding each recording which takes half as long as the recording itself.
Are there any video editing softwares similar to Final Cut Pro available on Linux?
Basically the title.
I've been using Final Cut on my MacBook for ages now to do video editing, but since much of my recording and the actual video uploading is done from the Linux computer, it would be a whole lot more streamlined to be able to edit on there too. So, I was wondering if there were any closely-matched alternatives to FCP that work on Linux?
Feel free to recommend anything to me, but I am on a low budget, so if you have low-cost options do let me know.
Installed Discord via the native tar.gz package so that Rich Presence worked, but the app's icon doesn't show in the taskbar when it's closed (KDE desktop).
Is there any way to give it a permanent icon when it's closed as well? This is the only downside to the native version for me right now.
EDIT: someone suggested Vesktop, so i checked it out, but it has the same issue with the native install. so how do i give it an icon?
Friend's YT account got locked because of Australian under 16 laws. When trying to verify, no options appear.
EDIT: I've asked him to use the link the bot provided to submit a bug report to YouTube. I will update further if this helps or doesn't help.
UPDATE: He got the account working again. Fiddled with the birthday until it worked and let him verify. very strange.
TL;DR - My friend gets stuck on this screen when trying to verify his age after his YouTube account got locked due to Aussie age restrictions (falsely so, he is 17).
So my friend, who does not have Reddit and struggles with tech issues frequently enough to irritate anyone, is now facing another issue. He is a small content creator with several videos on youtube already, but yesterday had his account locked due to "not being over 16" (even though he IS over 16 and another account with the same set birthday is absolutely fine), and due to the Aussie laws dictating such being a requirement.
Like all of us, he's pretty pissed at the whole age verification thing, but he values his channel and the already posted content enough that verification is necessary. However, when signing into YouTube and selecting the prompt to verify his age, it presents him with this screen. No options, no buttons, no nothing. He's completely stuck.
NB: he can still use his google account elsewhere, but signing in to YouTube prompts him to verify.
He also can't report a bug on Google either because a) the site thinks he's under 16 and won't let him, or b) the site thinks he's under 18 (which is true) and therefore the overarching account is still under parental controls (I am unaware if his parents set something like that up or not).
Given all of this, I decided to reach out on his behalf to a community who might be able to help.
How would we go about getting around this? How can he get access back to his channel and YT account?
I'm not sure how well people on here can help with bugs, but if this isn't the right sub to ask a question like this, then please do direct me to somewhere that would be better suited (mods, if you decide to remove my post, please let me know where would be better as I can't figure out anywhere else, other than maybe r/techsupport, but even then that doesn't feel quite right).
Is it worth keeping pre-caching in Steam turned on or should I have it off?
I've noticed since moving to Linux that every time I start my computer again, Steam has several "shader pre-caching" updates for games that are sometimes in the gigabytes. After some research, I learned that this is to speed up load times, increase framerates, and reduce stutter by essentially preloading shaders for your game. For some, this is worth keeping on, and for others, they suggest turning it off.
The post I saw was from here over a year ago. So, what's the setting worth now?
If you've got anything to say specific to my hardware/system:
CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 5700x
RAM: 32GB
GPU: AMD Radeon RX 6700XT
OS: Bazzite with KDE desktop.
