Why would an officer camp outside a neighbours front door?

I live in a block of flats with a dozen residences. There is currently a police woman sat in the communal stairs outside one of my neighbours doors. She's literally sat in one of those folding camping chairs.

What sort of incident or incidents would result in one or more officers to sit outside someones front door as if to stop people from gaining entry? Or to prevent the resident from leaving?

The pendulum swings for the clean

This is a story that I heard from my dad years ago. However, I don’t remember if he was talking about himself or his dad. My dad was born in the 1940s, so please make your own judgement of when this might have been. Perhaps a historian could figure it out.

So with me not knowing whether it was my dad or granddad that experienced this, but with how the technology is described, I would make a guess that it was my grandad.

However, to make note, it was my grandad that was the technician but rather a standard worker that heard about it through the gossip mill as everyone was close-nit community in the workplace in a way. Not to mention this wasn’t a big factory.

Now onto the story.

This was a factory. What they made, I don’t remember. However, it had some delicate machinery that had some specific timings for work flow.

To keep various these machines and the clock in and out times as accurate as possible, there was this single, massive grandfather type clock in the office area which fed into the work area and other places.

This clock didn’t feed into everything, just fed into a few things. The way I heard it, it was just a few machines and the time clock. They probably saved money by using one clock instead of individual clocks.

One day, when the factory opened, the head staff noticed that the clock times in the factory were off by roughly half an hour. They frantically went round to find out what caused it but couldn’t find the cause. The main clock was working fine, but the time was wrong.

So they reset the time.

The factory did their work, closed up for the night and then in the morning, it was off by about half an hour again.

They checked everything yet again and couldn’t find anything wrong. There were no broken cogs, rods, pins and wires etc. Just that the time was not accurate. So they reset the time and continued for the day.

After a third morning of the same thing happening, the factory owner and the main staff decided that they will stay in the factory all night to watch and see what is happening.

So that night after the workers had left they started walking around the factory while observing the machinery.

They noted that the clocks were fine and the machinery were turned off and then they noticed that a group of women entered the factory. They basically dismissed the women as the cause of the problem as they were just the cleaning ladies that come in each night to give the factory a thorough clean.

They watched as the clocks continued ticking away and the cleaning ladies barely touched any of the important mechanisms. Then all of a sudden, one of the men noticed that the clocks had stopped.

They ran up to the office where the main clock was and saw a cleaning lady sat at one of the desks with her feet up on the desk, a cleaning cloth in hand and the main clock’s pendulum across her lap.

She was so focused on cleaning the pendulum that she didn’t notice the men walk in.

After talking to the cleaning lady it came to light that she was new to working at the factory and didn’t know how the machinery worked. She was so focused on doing a good job, that when she noticed that the pendulum was dirty, she just opened the cabinet door, unhooked the pendulum and give it a good clean.

Even the factory owner couldn’t be angry. Here was a worker, albeit a cleaning lady, was trying to do a good job for the factory, but she was never told not to touch the clock.

They set the clock going again and told all of the cleaning ladies not to touch the main clock.

The next morning when the workers arrived and saw that the clocks weren’t broken, one worker asked his boss what happened. The boss told him the story and in turn he told some other works and it spread around the entire factory.

A few days later, there was a padlock on the cabinet housing the pendulum.

[TOMT] Looking for the manga, anime where the Demon Lord teams up with the Hero to change the world where neither side wins?

There is a manga, with an anime adaptation where a Hero charges into the demon lord's castle in order to defeat him, only to find a large chested female Demon Lord, who asks him to join her in trying to change the world.

The Demon Lord even wore horns like a tiara.

They both travel to the human world where they start changing things like improving agriculture as the first thing.

However, neither the human or demon government wants the war to end so that they can remain in power.

Can anyone remind me of the name of this manga please?

Is there any point in putting the laundry tabs in first?

This is a question for front loading washing machines.

When you read the instruction on how to use laundry tabs, it says to put one in first at the back of the drum. I'm guessing this is to start it off dissolving before the machine finishes filling with water.

However, my machine (LG) always spins the drum a dozen times before filling with water. I'm guessing that it's doing an initial weight check.

If I put the tab in first, and then the machine does the initial dozen spins, the tab will definitely no longer be at the bottom. For all I know, there is a change that the tab could end up inside a trouser pocket before it fills with water.

So is there any point in putting the tab in first, or can I just throw it on top of the laundry like you would sit one of those lids filled with liquid detergent?

Which is the best toilet rolls to buy?

I'm trying to find out which toilet rolls are the best to buy.

The criteria is simple. As cheap as possible but without sacrificing quality, quantity and size.

I've tried doing a DuckDuck search for answers, only to get bot reviews that scrape Amazon and aggregate them into 5 star reviews that don't make sense.

For example, in first place is Brand A, 6 pack with a 4.5 star review while in second place is Brand A, 12 pack gets 4.4 stars. Exact same product, but different quantity per pack.

I even saw one in first place with 2 out of 5 stars and reviewed as being a great a product.

All with links to the Amazon pages.

So here I am, asking real people.

Which brand is best?

Middle of England. A place where roads melt.

Years ago the Council decided that instead of repairing the roads, they will just cover them with something equivalent to roofing felt. This roofing felt just so happens to not like the heat and tend to start melting when the temps reach double digits. You end up seeing lots of these black spots in the road where the surface is either blistering, or a parked car had the steering turned. Sometimes even lines of tire tracks where a car was moving slowly.

Which Keychron colour is the full clicky one?

I'm interested in buying either the Keychron Q6 Max or K10 Max. However, there is a choice of 3 colours. Red, Brown and Banana.

Which of these 3 colours is the clicky one both tactile and sound?

I've tried looking and was getting conflicting info.

Sometimes the Red is clicky, other times it's linear.

Sometimes the Brown clicks physically and sounds clicky while other times it's quiet.

Can someone please straighten this is for me? I need both clicky in tactile and sound.

Linux Compatible Full Size keyboard request

I was sent here from r/linuxquestions

I need to replace my "Razer Huntsman Elite" which is mostly compatible with Linux and only after I set it up under Win11 before switching to Linux Mint.

I'm not on dual-boot so I can't get a keyboard, set it up in Windows, and then use it under LM.

I need a full sized mechanical keyboard that I can hear and feel the clicks of the keys. Much like my current one.

RGB is optional. I'd either have it as a single colour or cycling through colours. None of the wave, reaction, rainfall, etc.

I have no use for the media keys like play/pause, fast forward, rewind, etc. And definitely not those game mode options.

So to sum up, can anyone please recommend a UK Layout, Full Size (not 10-keyless, compact, 90/80/60%) that is RGB optional and works in Linux straight out of the box with barely any configuration?

Can some please recommend a Full Size Mechanical UK Keyboard please?

I'm in need of replacing my keyboard but am having trouble finding one that is 100% compatible.

I'm currently running Linux Mint and using a Razer Hunstman Elite keyboard which isn't 100% compatible. I cannot change the RGB settings from within LM and other features like the media keys don't work.

But that's moot as the keyboard has developed a fault where is randomly stops working. As in it acts like it was unplugged and immediately plugged back in. For 1 or 2 seconds, there is no RGB and key presses aren't recognised.

All I'm looking for is a full sized mechanical keyboard. Not 90%, 80%, 60%, compact etc. Not membrane as I need to feel the keys click etc.

However, 90% of keyboards these days are RGB. Which means dedicated software to mange the RGB. Or even just to turn the RGB on.

I'm not into the fancy RGB colour settings like wave, media, rainfall etc. Either a fixed colour or cycling is fine for me.

I don't use media keys or game mode switch keys.

Also I'm int he UK, so UK layout is required.

Can someone please recommend a keyboard? Thank you.

Recommend a wireless headset for Linux Mint please?

I need to replace my Bluetooth headset as the padding is starting to fall apart and make them uncomfortable.

I'm looking for an over-the-ear headset that doesn't have a microphone.

All I use it for is to listen to stuff like stories while walking around my place doing stuff like chores.

I say over-the-ear as earbuds don't fit in my ears, and on-ear headsets press my ears painfully against my glasses.

My old pair was a Sony WH-CH720N which is poor quality in the sound department.

If I'm listening to talking then the audio is fine but can get a bit crackly. Anything more, like relaxing music and it just falls apart.

So I'd like a pair that has better sound compatibility please.

I'm will to pay anywhere between £30 to £300 (estimated) but the cheaper the better.

Can anyone please recommend a headset that is compatible with Linux Mint that works either straight out of the box like simply connect through Bluetooth, or minimal effort after requiring the installation of an extra piece of software?
