I don't know how to explain this, but sometimes I feel like I hope my sister dies. I know it sounds horrible, but it comes from years of exhaustion, fear, and feeling trapped.
My sister is around 17 years old. She was born with a disability, and when she was a baby, there was a chance she could have received treatment that might have improved her condition. However, my father did not take her to doctors or seek proper help. My mother did everything she could, and for the past 17 years, she has been the only person taking care of my sister.
She does everything for her: bathing her, changing her clothes, changing diapers and pads, and handling all her needs. My mother has basically spent her whole life at home. Even before my sister was born, my father was controlling, but after my sister came, he used her as a reason to keep my mother from going out. Over time, my mother became isolated and lost her social life.
I worry about the future because my father never planned for what would happen when my mother cannot take care of my sister anymore. I am the oldest child, so I feel like the responsibility will automatically fall on me. I care about my sister, but I am scared of losing my own life and being forced into a role I never chose.
Growing up, I helped take care of my sister. I changed diapers and helped with her needs when I was young, but it became too much for me, and now I feel traumatized by the idea of doing it again.
My sister can sometimes become very hyperactive. Because of that, my father keeps rooms, cupboards, and many things locked away to prevent her from breaking things. When she does something he dislikes, he often screams at her, hits her, or punishes her. There were times when he tied her hands and legs with ropes so she would not move at night. He also gave her sleeping pills, and later stronger medication, because he could not handle her behavior.
My mother knows this is wrong, but she is exhausted and has no real support. She takes care of my sister, my father, the house, and all of us. My father is also very demanding and depends on my mother emotionally, expecting her to always be available for him.
I feel angry because my mother has sacrificed her entire life, and I feel afraid because I might be expected to continue that sacrifice in the future. I do care about my sister, but I also feel overwhelmed by the situation and scared of what it means for my own future.
