Strangest thing happened as I picked today.

I staged an empty tote. I damaged out an item and that item was supposed to go into the tote that I staged. The system prompted me to push the empty tote out, but this time, it was one of those yellow racklights with the number on it, the usual one. I clicked "view container" and there was virtually 11 items inside that empty tote even though I never picked in it. That tote was empty.

What even happened? I guess it could be the MRS line thing? I pushed that empty tote down anyways. Was I supposed to do that?

I rode the new Metro Train Cars for the first time. I really like the air conditioning there and that they are kind of trying to copy LightRail's style. Sadly, certain people might mess up the trains for everybody...

On the bright side of working swing shift, at least I'll have a boring 3 hours of possibly cleaning, and the rest of my shift will be normal later on.

Also, what types of Outbound "maintenance" will there even be for pick, pack, and ship dock? Is "maintenance" some type of excuse to relax and chill on volume? Is it some type of excuse for the PA, AMs, and OMs for the day to celebrate something? What exactly are they "maintaining"? Is it just cleaning and re-5s-ing stations and remodeling stations and that's it? What exactly are people doing nowadays?

If I'm gonna stay to clean up totes or sweep the floor or re-5s anything for 3 hours, I won't mind that. Heck, I won't even care. At least my whole shift won't be as boring. I'll also get paid.

I even bet that I won't ever be trained to do anything else. Why? Because unless I am wrong, there will not be enough cross-training for people to be IB trained. Plus, I'm trained in pick. Ain't no way I'm gonna be trained to stow due to the safety rotation rule.

How different packages from Fulfillment Centers breaking at your Sort Center:

Boxes:

  • Gets crushed by heavy boxes on top
  • Contents spill out due to improper building by the FCs and even SCs
  • Rip due to lack of dunnage inside the box.
  • When the item gets lopsided, it's because there's no dunnage in there at all. Also leads to crushing
  • Lack of tape inside the bottom causes the package to rip open
  • Clear tape is the worst
  • Black or Blue WAT tape is not that bad at all.

SIOC and Non-Con packages for both TnS and regular FCs:

  • Package gets ripped easily
  • The weights rip through the box way too easily
  • Longer packages get broken down
  • J7A and Y2 packages rip through easily

SIOB packages:

  • Hole in clear bag rips easily due to other packages attached to them, even if inside a shuttle
  • The seal is not all the way closed for reasons unknown. Either could be a stow or an IXD site issue

RUM/ Paper Jiffies

  • Rip easily when SLAM labels are attached to packages.
  • When the item is pointy, it makes a hole
  • Cube sized items in a big or small jiffy can poke a hole through.
  • Packer did not close the seal all the way
  • 20' size Boxes in the shuttles or jiffies cram up space, leading to spills to happen
  • Those packages are way too stuffed in cages, and that causes some of them to stick out. The cage bulges up,
  • Heavy item in a jiffy or RUM can rip through.
  • Spills fade the SLAM labels out due to truck movement

SmartPac jiffies (the blue ones with the bubble wrap inside of them):

  • The seal machine did not seal the package all the way. There may even be openings.
  • Same issues as Paper Jiffies and RUMs
  • Those jiffies get cut open easily for reasons unknown. Could be something happening in ship dock, or could be that the AA from an SC cut a shuttle through and unloaded it and it got ripped in the process.
  • Spills

The Carton Wrap Boxes:

  • Seal not closed all the way
  • Other boxes puncture through
  • Box crushed by another box

In general, AFE boxes, the ones with multiple shipments in them, are notorious for having one item spill on all the other contents inside of them. To me they are the most common offenders in the sort center problem solve world. But that's all I have to say on here.

It's mildly annoying when you are in pick, you see a bunch of ripped items that you have to damage out, and the a PA approaches you about it. What do you want me to do then? Send some damaged stuff out?

The same goes for missing or unscannables as well, but damaged items to me are the second icing of the cake.

I understand that y'all don't want me to flood the MRS jackpot lines too much, but if I see things that I have to damage out, then I have to damage it out. Sorry. Yesterday I had a lot of ripped items and some spilled items.

At least the PA wanted to ask what was going on and did not coach me. Also, when the PA said "they told me you had damaged out too many items." Who exactly are "they" referring to?

Saw this on the Amazon vest life IG. I'm not gonna tell you my first letter of my name, but it looks like I'm a Waterspider Wizard 💀. This sub is gonna have a field day with this one...

Anyone else use these sleeves when they pack? They're actually helpful avoiding box cuts on arm. I'm surprised not many people use them though.

You put them on your sleeve so that when you pack, the corner of the box that you fold won't make minor cuts on you. It's in the IAT training (updated) and frankly, it's helpful. I had some box cuts on my arms a few times.

Also wearing a long sleeves shirt helps as well, but if you are wearing a T-shirt the sleeves are worth it.

For the first time ever, in my 5 years of working at Amazon, I saw an actual person from IT who works the night shift at my site.

I was in singles. I told the PA about the hand scanner not working, but the tote and overhead scanners working. The PA put in a ticket.

About an hour later, a person with a black khaki shirt came to my station. He was not wearing an OpsTechIT vest. He had a spare scanner, a PC, and other equipment. He took the hand scanner that wasn't working and replaced it with a new one. He unplugged it from the white panel that powers the pack station.

That white panel has a lot of wiring equipment and contains the computer that powers the PC screen.

I asked if he was IT, and he said "yes." I told him that from my experience IT works during the day. He told me "there's one during the night and one during the day." Particularly at my FC.

The 2 SCs and 1 SSD I worked at had 1 IT AA work there, but during the day. This FC I am at has 2. 1 working day, and another working night.

I am very happy now. But the question is, why on Earth would there be 1 IT tech for a huge building for each shift? I think there should be a bit more.

But other than that, all hope is not lost anymore at my site. I'm happy.

Original Gourmet Lollipops from Home Depot. You get those near the check out area whenever you shop there for tools and stuff. Sometimes, I buy these. They're really good.

Here's my life as a swing shift pick learning ambassador so far. Anyone else working swing shift and am an ambassador experiencing the same thing too?

TL;DR - Day shift doesn't seem to need me. Night shift needs me the most. Plus my direct AM is a night shifter.

I work BH swing shift. My shift is from 3pm - 1:30am and I have two 30 minute breaks, and 3 periods. Basically, I am scheduled for BHD's P3 (3pm - 6pm), and BHN's P1 (6:30pm - 10pm) and P2 (10:30pm - 2:30am). Even though P2 for night shift is 4 hours, I only work 3 out of the 4 hours of that before I leave.

My first unpaid break is from 6pm - 6:30pm, and the paid break is from 10pm - 10:30pm.

As a swing shifter, my direct AM is a night shifter. I am not even needed for ambassador work at all so far during day shift's P3 because they already have some. For night shift, however, I am needed only when called to. My AM or PA will send me to Learning either for retrains or for new hires/CTA cross-training people from singles to pick.

Since I leave at 1:30am, the trainers get a bit upset, and my AM has to find another pick ambassador from another mod or my current one. I still have to complete audits and assign permissions and classes as usual. The training guide included. I am still set to the same standards as any other ambassador.

It'll be very rare for a new hire to work the shift pattern I work now. I am also thinking about at some point looking for a day shift to work, but at the same time, I've had a degree for 3 years now. I've talked with my AM about maybe giving another shot of wanting to be from a T1 -> L4 internal or external, and he said that him and his OM will be willing to help me. Idk if I want internal or external. Doing an external interview might be weird. I've also worked for Amazon for 5 years in 4 different buildings.

Other than that, that's my swing shift pick ambassador experience so far. At this point, if day shift is offered through HiTS and if it's a donut pattern or a DB2 or DB3 one, then I'll gladly take that.

Anyone else watched Crash Course with the Green brothers in their High School days? I remember being a teenager when my world history teacher introduced some of John Green's videos.

Their content was great back in the day in our teen years. Not sure if our current generation watches those. OlderGenZers who are teachers, do you sometimes use these videos and incorporate them in the classroom and does it help the kids at all?
