Medium Light Mod Fast rod recommendations?

Looking to get a mod fast rod to bank fish for bass. I throw a lot of Texas rigs and jigs, but the occasional crank bait, swim bait, chatter, spinner, etc. Basically looking for a do it all in a 1/8-1/2oz range. I know a do it all won’t do everything well, but I’m really hoping to maximize casting distance so even a fast rod that loads well would work.

Currently have the level rake ML Extra Fast which I love and will use for wading river smallies but it doesn’t throw a 7-14g lure a solid 50 yards like I need it to. Would love to find a rod that can throw 7-14g 75+yds, and occasionally throw down to 3.5g but it doesn’t have to throw those as far.

So far all I can find is the mojo bass trigon (concerned with reviews and breakage), the Phenix Maxim and an Abu Veritas. Of these, I’m leaning towards the Phenix but didn’t know if anyone had thoughts or if I’m missing a good rod that I’m not thinking of.

Fine tuning a SLX BFS for distance on heavier lures?

So trying to get more distance from my SLX BFS. I use it as sort of a “power BFS”. I only like having 1 combo while bank fishing so I use this on a ML Level Rake Extra Fast. This way I can toss Neds all the way up to heavier lures (max is about 12-14g).

I’ve read the SLX BFS already has great bearings. Is it as simple as using the right line and cleaning/ greasing and oiling everything? I have Shimano oil as well as some bones speed cream. Also have NLGI 2 super lube. Do I need NLGI 1 and 90w gear oil or will this suffice?

It has 12lb braid on it, but will step that down to 10lb.

Finally getting dialed with bank fishing Loch Raven the past 2 weeks.

First year consistently fishing Loch Raven from the bank. I primarily kayak fish for smallmouth. Still do, but got tired of driving to PA to fish so I started bank fishing Loch Raven around May. Finally starting to learn it a bit more.

1st is my PB for sure but didn’t have a scale. Was 18.25”. Second was 2lbs on the dot and 3rd was 2.87lbs at 17.5”.

Bass X MHM vs BPS Crankin Stick

Looking for a new cranking rod, not trying to spend a ton. Can buy a lightly used St Croix Bass X MH Moderate in a 7’2” or was thinking of getting a Bass Pro Crankin Stick in a MH Fast (Fast per them but it is composite…).

Going to be using this exclusively for cranks in the 8’-20’ range. A few deep cranks like 6xds as well as those in between at 8’, 10’, 12’, 14’ etc. So a medium/ deep cranking rod. I hear composite is great for that, or full glass so I’m hesitant on the Bass X.

Gear line up for off shore reservoir fishing.

Renting a boat at the local reservoir in MD for my birthday with a buddy. New to offshore bass fishing but have been a few times recently, trying to get dialed in more. No telling where they’ll be holding. Friday into Saturday is calling for 0.75” of total rainfall. Sundays forecast looks like light rain until 4am and then cloudy, some sun here and there with minimal wind (2-5mph).

Baits I am planning to use:

  1. 20’ deep diving crank (Freedom Lures Ultra Diver Shad80 in Streak Shad color) I also have a handful of 6XDs and some other cranks that dive in the 10-14’ range.

  2. Football Jig (1/2oz 6th sense axle swinging hybrid jig in grass mutant with a ned wacky 3.5”battle bug in copper flake green pumpkin)

  3. Chatter bait (1/2oz smallie magic baby jack with a crush city mayor in gizzard shad color I cut the tail off cuz I’m out of pintails)

  4. Neko (zoom trick worm in green pumpkin, 1/16 neko weight)

  5. Minnow (crush city electric shad 3.5” mooch minnow on a berkley hybrid head in 3/16oz)

May have to switch a few things up if they’re pushed shallow from the rain but plan is to see where the baitfish are first, maybe start a bit shallow then if all else fails try to find deeper structure or ledges and fish them. I have a Deeper Max I’ve never used yet so at least I will have minimal 2d sonar on the rental boat.

Low gear cranking reel at $200 or less?

Looking to piece together a combo for deep and medium cranks to ledge fish with. I’m a big Shimano guy but open to other brands. Looking for low gear and with a budget of less than $200 (preferably $150 or under). Possibly a JDM reel but unsure of what’s out there.

Inexpensive cranking reel?

Looking to find a cheaper cranking reel in a low gear ratio. Plan is to smack this on a 13 fishing defy cranking rod to use for cranks, typically 8-20’ deep cranks. Figured the rod was cheap and I have a 13 fishing Oath finesse spinning rod that does great. I have a separate lighter rod for square bills and such, but have been fishing the local reservoir and throwing deeper cranks and some really deep 6xds.

Would love for this combo to stay under $120 total as I won’t be using it a ton and the rod is $60 itself. So realistically trying to find a serviceable reel with a gear ratio less than 6:1, preferable around that 5.1:1 or 5.4:1 all for under $60.

If you were to take a late September/ early October kayak trip, where would you go?

Considering taking an extended weekend trip in September or October with a few buddies for River smallie fishing. We typically hit the lower Susquehanna as we all live close, so looking for a different river. Plan is to get a cabin/ house close to the river. Possibly booking a charter for 4-6 hours the first day to learn how to fish it and then fish it in the kayaks the next 2-3 days.

So far considering the New River but unsure of where at/ the productive areas. Willing to check out other rivers within driving distance tho!

Hi, it’s me. The guy who owns 3 scales and didn’t have one…

Went for a quick trip after work with my ML BFS set up and a small fanny, a few soft plastics and a Plano 3450 double sided tackle box. My scales are a bit too big to pack in this set up. Have since ordered a mini kast king scale.

Anyway, was windy as hell and threw on a chatter with a paddle tail. Was dragging it across a ledge and let it die a bit. Went to reel and I noticed it wasn’t chattering. Figured I caught weeds then my rod tugged and it was on. Great fight over all and easily a PB largemouth for me.

Measured my rod when I got home and he was 18”, maybe 18.25”. No idea on the weight. Have caught 3.25lb+ smallies and he seemed heavier than that. Was thinking maybe 4lbs but no clue as Largemouth throw me off (I primarily fish smallmouth).

Prop pitch for trolling motor?

I don’t use trolling motors to troll, but rather to drive a job boat on an electric only lake. Weeds aren’t super common unless in the shallows, and I don’t like to get too much more shallow than 4-5’ or so this time of year.

Now, I realize gas motors typically have predetermined prop pitch, but I’ve heard I can squeak a bit more top end speed out of my trolling motor with a more aggressive pitch. Getting a 24v 86lb Newport NV soon and see they use a 11.1” prop but they don’t mention pitch. Assuming it’s 3-4 as most are.

I’ve been looking at RC airplane props and thinking of getting an 11x7 or 11x8. Will this work? Will I get a bit more top end speed out of this? Should I go with a 2 blade or 3 blade prop?

First time renting a boat at Loch Raven.

Man, that was tough not having sonar or down/ side scan to find structure. Had one for the day in the morning. First cast at the second spot with a crank. Game plan was to look at maps and drag a 6xd crank until it got hung on grass, then fish the grass beds. Threw cranks, Carolina rigs and Texas rigs. Wind picked up and it got choppy quick. Switched to a spinner over the grass and had one get off and another nice one follow to the boat.

Guys and girls that rent there, any tips on making the trip easier? Wish there was a mobile fish finder with at least chirp and down imaging, but all the mobile ones I found (Stryker and Piranha) only do chirp..

Thule surf pads/ other pads?

I have a 2016 hobie outback as well as a crescent ultra lite I got for grab and go trips. I car top it on a set of Thule AeroBlades. The rubber strips on those is marking up the kayaks decently if I slide them in the least bit. Was thinking of either getting pads or maybe a replacement for the rubber strip?

With the pads, are they noisy? Do I have to put them on/ take them off every time or can they just stay on there? Do I go with the Thule surf pads or something different (Dakine, off brand)

I’d much rather replace the strip but idk if they make a non marking strip for the aeroblades?

Grab n go bag?

Just got a crescent ultra lite to be able to take quick trips when I don’t want to pack up the hobie. Took it out for my first time tonight, did solid! Caught a likely new PB (didn’t have a scale). Since I weigh 200lbs and the thing is tippy and has a max capacity of 250lbs, I went light as possible. Only packed a small Plano 3550 double sided box I stored in a dry bag and a handful of soft plastics. Had my leader break while out there and had to go straight braid, also didn’t have a scale which would have been nice.

What’s everyone use for a quick go bag that’s waterproof? Would love to fit a double sided 3550 or 2 and 6-8 soft plastic bags, a roll of flouro for leader and a scale. My PFD fits the pliers, knife, snacks and emergency stuff (whistle, small first aid kit).

Maybe a hemostat as well as I gut hooked this guy (SMOKED a Texas rigged trick worm) and my regular pliers took some time to get the hook out. He was revived a bit by the boat and swam off ok, but likely will die due to the amount of blood…

Any decent bank fishable areas for bass within 30-45mins of Towson?

Loch Raven is hit or miss and tough to bank fish. I’ve fished Roland a few times. Looking for some areas, ponds, lakes that I can fish from the bank or a light kayak after work or on quick trips on the weekend. Baltimore county lacks decent ponds and the only spots I know of are the reservoirs.

Would love to find a private pond to help manage/ pay to fish. But those are hard to find.

Needing a new DC reel. Since the ones are being upgraded/ changed all the time, what should I get?

Currently using a SLX DC XT on a Level Rake ML for River and big creek smallies. Unfortunately I lost a rod on the kayak so that SLX DC XR will be put on a new evergreen combat stick I bought and will be a kayak rod.

Usually am casting 3.5-12g on this set up but occasionally down to 2g in a pinch. A regular bait caster won’t quite cut it so I typically run reels geared towards BFS. Also running 20lb braid to 8lb fluoro. I also own a Micromonster and an SLX BFS on other lighter rods. Wanting a DC reel for this application because it can be a bit windy at times and casting sub 7g into the wind sucks, no matter how well you’re tuned.

What are my options? Seems the cheetah Air DC is sold out/ unavailable. Would love to find a used one in good condition. Ideally I want to stay under $120 for this reel as it’s not used often, only when I’m wading rivers and big creeks for smallies. I have lighter BFS gear for small creeks, bank fishing on lakes and ponds, etc. Bonus if it has a decent drag. The SLX BFS is at 3.5kg and 3lb+ river smallies in current can get rowdy.

Are the Yak Attack tether tubes solid enough to secure rods in the event of a flipped kayak?

As the post says, how solid are the tethers? Ideally I wish a company made the omega or Scotty power lock style collar on a crate tube, but no such luck.

I am struggling to fit rod floats on some of my bait casters with micro guides. My crate is secured nicely to my kayak. Accidentally flipped the other week and lost my rods in the crate. Recovered all but 1. Looking for a solution for 3 rods that I can have locked in place to the crate in the event I flip.

Penn Spinfisher V combo.

I have a spinfisher V combo. It’s the 6500 on a 10’ rod. Is it just me or is this rod hard to get distance out of? Typically throwing 4oz+ so maybe I’m overloading it. 30lb braid straight to a rig/ leader. Usually am getting 50yds or so, but no where near enough to get past the break.

Have been considering getting a 12’ Daiwa emcast for the reel. Thoughts?

Blank suggestion.

Never built a rod but have repaired guides/ tip tops and done some wrapping on a home made turner (old epoxy cup turner converted to a rod turner). I have thread, I have prokote so figured maybe I’ll just get a blank, parts and guides and build what I’m looking for.

Anyway, been looking for a 5’-5’6” light powered, extra fast action (or fast) casting rod to use for bfs bank fishing in tight spaces. Only thing is, hard to find one with those specs. Ideally I’d love a blank that performs like the Daiwa Tatula BFS. I have one of those but it’s 6’5” so I’d love it to be shorter.

Any blank suggestion that would match this? I typically toss 3.5-10g lures and fish laydowns so need some decent back bone and a quick action for hook sets.

Looking for reviews on this rod.

I’ve been searching what seems to be forever for a L or ML casting rod with a fast or extra fast action, under 6’, the shorter the better. Using this on banks along lakes with a ton of trees and narrow casting lanes. Throwing into laydowns and fishing for bass so the bit of backbone and a fast action is required.

Other than Phenix’s classic BFS at 5’8” and $200, this one is about all I can find. Most rods under 6’ in the BFS world are all UL and I do not want to have a noodle. Been missing hook sets on smaller UL’s. I attribute this to the lack of backbone and my lures often in that 7g range. I have the tatula bfs and love it, it’s just a bit too long at times for tighter areas.

How’s the action on this rod? Is it stiff or a bit noodley? If it’s crisp, I don’t mind it being less sensitive if it can handle a hook set on a small Texas rig and can pull bass from laydowns. Casting distance and being able to handle sub 3.5g lures isn’t a concern as most my casts are 40’ max, usually landing in that 15-20’ range. This rods more for flipping and casting into cover or occasionally parallel along the banks when they’re cruising shallow.
