PSA. Mustad Assault Finesse. Best damn hooks I’ve used.

PSA. Mustad Assault Finesse. Best damn hooks I’ve used.

Been bass fishing for a bit now using BFS. Love the finesse bulletz and the EWG Ned lockz but they seem to get hung up often and occasionally I’ll have bad hook ups on those/ fish get off. In walks these…

The #6 fits micro lures wonderfully. I’ve been rigging 2” zman grubz, baby craws and mini chunk trailers on those. Typically with a 1/16 bullet. The #4 is a great weedless presentation for Ned’s of all kinds for a weedless presentation.

I’ve even started using their 2/0 for kayak fishing on my medium size craws and bugs. 10/10 hooks. The square shape works but seems to help the bait stay in place/ remain weedless causing fewer snags and hang ups.

Rod floats?

So, if you saw my other post, I flipped my kayak. Usually have the rods secured in my holders on my crate, but not today as it was calm and on a lake… lost a Daiwa Rebellion and a Curado DC.

Anyway. What’s your suggestions on rod floats. The Cush It seems out of the way for my bait casters but may be too big to fit my holders… I see they have the elite pro 2 but can’t find the measurements anywhere. My worry with the foam tube type floats is that it’ll get in the way of me casting on a bait caster.

Flipped the kayak for the first time. Reels were submerged in the lake for 5 mins. What’s the next step?

All my gear was tied down… except the rods… SLX DC XT, Curado DC and a 2500 Ultegra. Spent 5 mins underwater and had to dive for them. What do I do now other than buy rod floats for the future lol. Do I need to open them up or just set them in the sun to dry?

On a side note, my kastking boxes are bone dry. The 2 Plano edge boxes? Soaked inside.

Help me pack a kit for largemouth.

Kayaking a lake this weekend. 100 acre lake with a ton of laydowns. Fairly shallow, 15’ at its deepest in one spot with an average depth of 5’. Many shallow coves where there are creek inlets (<2’). Few holes in the middle at about 10-12’. The lake is divided in 2 sections with a pinch point under a train bridge.

Weather is warm and sunny. 52 at sunrise and reaching 75 by noon and 80 by 3pm. Pressure looks stable until 9 where it starts dropping into the afternoon.

Plan so far is to hit the banks early, targeting laydowns and the one weed bed and if the bite slows up, fish a bit deeper.

So far my rods are a bottom contact (Megabass Braillist Levante), a top water/ treble hook rod (Daiwa rebellion mh/r) a do it all for paddle tails, chatters and spinners (Cashion element v2 “chatterbait”) and my finesse spinning (ML/F 13 fishing Oath)

The Braillist will have a Texas rigged bug or craw. 3/16 to 1/4oz weight as it’s shallow. May bump up the weight on denser laydowns.

The rebellion has a small buzz bait with a 3” zman minnowz

The cashion I’m stuck on. Thinking a 1/8oz spinner with a single tail grub to target laydowns. May switch that to a chatter for the outside of weedbeds and when I need to fish deeper or more open?

The finesse spinning has a weightless 4” senko Texas rigged. Can switch that to a Ned or a fluke tho, idk.

I never fish large mouth from the kayak (I’m a river smallie guy) so feel a bit out of place here. Rivers make sense to me. Hit weed beds in the summer and still water next to current shallow. I bank fish largemouth occasionally and that’s all 100% lighter Texas rigs or Ned rigs, casting into cover where I can.

Any help is appreciated!

Patapsco Ponds?

Anyone ever fish these ponds? Belle grove rd has a handful of huge ones and there’s a few along nursery as well. Was in the area today. My uncle told me that used to be the spot for nice bass and crappie. Seems like it’s all snakehead now. Are there even bass still in these ponds?

Decent light fast/ extra fast rod under 6’?

For the life of me, I can’t find a decent rod that’s under 6’ (shorter the better), light powered in a fast/ extra fast. Hopefully less than $100. I do a lot of bank fishing with overhangs and bushes everywhere. I’m using a tatula rn (6’6”) and my new level rake ML (6’10”). Both are ok, but find myself having to side arm around a tree to properly hit a lane.

I don’t need something that can huck 2g far. Most the lures I’m throwing are 3.5-7g. Some 10g or so. I don’t even need them to go more than 30yds most the time as I’m targeting lay downs and banks. Would love something with a bit of back bone, fast action around 5’6” or less.

What am I missing?

Level Rake ML 6’10” review

Dare is say there is a new contender to the Tatula XT and SLX for best $100 rod (despite BFS)? Bought this ML on a whim to use for heavier BFS fishing for bass. I’ve had it out 3 times now and have been seriously impressed.

I don’t get too caught up in the whole “is it BFS or not”/ power bfs, whatever. Plain and simple, if I’m using a BFS reel, throwing 7g or less, I consider a light casting set up to be BFS. This rod was bought for a do it all for Neds, small paddle tails, weightless and lighter weighted Texas rigs and finesse jigs. It does all of those extremely well.

30/40 ton Toray blank, titanium oxide inserts on micro stainless guides and a tangle free tip top, all for $99 is what drew my attention.

So far, it casts everything I throw at it like a dream. Have been mostly throwing 1/16 Neds with a trailer and a few 1/32 jig heads with a 2” keitech paddle tail. So, total weight is falling in that 3.5-7g range typically. I did throw on a panther martin 2 (1/16oz) for a bit and the rod didn’t struggle at all. The reel was the limiting factor (kingdom micro monster with 20lb j braid to a 8lb invizx leader). I’m sure if I smacked on my SLX BFS with 0.8PE to a 4-6lb leader it would have thrown it just fine.

It’s extra fast, light and extremely sensitive. I’ve since replaced my tatula BFS with this one for most applications. My only real gripe is the length. I prefer shorter rods for tight bank fishing but I am looking forward to wading large creeks and rivers for smallies with this thing.

In Maryland and I don’t catch a ton of largemouth so likely broke a PB today (no scale). Bugs/ craws were getting it done. All caught on either a TRD Crawz on a finesse bullet, a weightless bandito bug jr or a Great Lakes micro juvy craw. Bonus whisker bass at the end too. Had a blast.

Already have 1 of these spooled with 40lb. I fish a lot of grass beds and rocky areas for smallmouth.

The other will go on a level rake ML and be throwing mostly light lures 1/8-1/4oz in the creeks and some largemouth in ponds and small lakes. Question is, what lb braid can I get away with on this without any dig/ issues?

I have 2 BFS set ups with 10lb and 15lb but they work because the shallow spool. This doesn’t have a shallow spool but is a size 70. My gut tells me 30lb but thinking maybe 20 to get more casting distance. Also doesn’t help that the level rod has micro guides so thinner the better there..

Looking to get a pair or waterproof boots for when I’m stream and pond fishing, don’t want to have to wear waders. Most the ponds I fish are usually muddy banks or a hike to get there. Also sometimes am bank fishing a stream and could easily cross a shallow section if I had some decently high waterproof boots. I deal with a lot of mud hiking and some slippery rocks so tread is a must.

Found these muck boots but I’m sure there are better options. Any suggestions?

Not really BFS, but putting an SLX DC XT onto a ML Level Rake Rod for creek and river smallies. I’d love to have a drag clicker on it. People recommend this one off Ali express but there’s an option for a 5 piece and a 1 piece. What even are the pieces? If I wanted the reel to stay the same and just click, could I go with the 1 piece?

I drive a 2020 Honda accord. I roof top a hobie outback on my Thule roof rack I installed and currently throw my rods (6’8” to 7’3”) in the trunk with the back seat down. Now, this works just fine for the time being and I have most of them sleeved or tethered with a rod strap.

I’m looking for a better system tho. Was thinking of making a pipe holder to go through the trunk/ back seat and just laying them in there, but wanted to see if there’s a better system. I know Yakima and Thule make rooftop holders but trying to avoid having a large rod case and my Hobie on top. Not sure how much I trust that?

Eventually I know I just need to buy a damn truck and trade in this car but I do love this car for everything other than its fish gear hauling abilities lol.

I’m debating on what to use for leader on my one rod. It’s a Cashion Element V2 chatterbait (MH, mod fast). Have it spooked with 40lb braid. This will be used for moving single hook baits (jig heads/ paddle tails, spinners and chatters mostly).

Part of me thinks to just go with 12-15lb fluoro due to the mod fast action. This would be perfect for the swim jig heads and paddle tails, etc.I am worried it won’t have enough stretch/ give for my chatters and spinners tho. So the other part thinks maybe go with composite (likely PLine) in a 12-15lb to add a little give.

Eastern USA. Warm season grass and cool season grass. (Should take care of the rules)

Anyway, if you had to pick a combo of 2 herbicides, what would it be? Just for fun and curiosity really. Was going to go with the almighty speedzone but went cheaper and got crossbow (2,4 D and Triclopyr). Glad I did because it works amazing! The triclopyr helped a ton as my yard has a bunch of wild violet, creeping cinquefoil and English ivy. Also have a nasty patch of thistle in my garden bed and it seems to destroy that too. This about handles it all other than pre emergent for crabgrass. Also keep some quinclorac on hand just in case (neighbors don’t treat for crabgrass)

Between Crossbow, pre emergent, sometimes quinclorac and of course methylated seed oil and some marking dye, I about have everything covered that pops up around my lawn.

Been fishing a lot of public pressured ponds for largemouth when I’m not traveling an hour+ to the river for smallmouth. It’s a real pain not having great spots but also watching the general public flail around, throw stuff and generally spook fish.

Been having some success lately with smaller cut tail worms and light jigs. Finesse seems to be all they’ll hit. Just wondering what everyone likes to throw on pressures ponds?

Excuse the dirt, didn’t want to snap my rod and he took a slide up the bank a bit. Cleaned him up in the water and released fine.

Fishing the UL Benkei with an SLX BFS. 10lb Sufix revolve to a 6lb invizx leader.

This pond doesn’t have huge bass but it’s semi local, public and the best spot I have for bank fishing near me. It gets regular pressure and met a guy fishing there that said he only had panfish nibbling all day. Threw a 1/16 1/0 owner ultrahead finesse ball with a 5” pink kut tail Gary yam. Figured I’d throw something they haven’t seen. Got hammered on the first cast. Caught another a bit later.

Went and hiked 2 miles to another pond I saw on the maps. Was a total waste. Shallow, sticker bushes and zero casting lanes. Stagnant and heavily tannin water. Hiked 2 miles back and said “bet they’ll hit a trout worm” (purple and pink). Threw that in weightless on a #2 gamatkatsu EWG and on the second cast, the bass in the first picture HAMMERED it right at the bank. Saw him flash in at 100mph and watched the lure disappear. Got him in the leaves a bit pulling him up but put him back in the water quick, swished him around and off he went.

Man, I love fishing BFS. Wish I had a pond with bigger bass but until then, the power BFS in the rivers for smallmouth will do.

Bonus picture (last one) of the bass I caught in a golf course pond while golfing Friday. Got him with a dock demon and a Okuma ceymar 500. Thinking of getting a Daiwa mobile pack in a UL or a major craft trapara for the ceymar in the golf bag. Also considering a purelure telescopic and a cheap bfs reel tho. Hmmm.
