[M4F] A D&D-based fantasy roleplay

Hello there! I am looking for a long-term roleplay partner who is interested in participating in a story with emotional depth and complexity. I am interested in fantasy settings, and so if you're a fan of swords and sorcery, adventure, mystery, political intrigue, high drama, or similar trappings, this might be the roleplay for you!

Most importantly, I'm looking to pursue an RP in a D&D-based setting. We won't be playing a literal game or rolling dice every instant, but I'm looking to play around with a world featuring DND monsters, magic, races, and tropes. You don't have to be super experienced with the tabletop game to try this out; just let me know what your familiarity with the game is.

I've got a couple of ideas for roleplays, but be sure to let me know if there is anything in particular you'd like to try, or a specific type of character you would like to play!

I value literacy and proper grammar/punctuation. Most important of all to me is dialogue. You might be able to give long paragraphs of description, but what matters most is what our characters are doing and saying.

If you're interested in roleplaying (or even just asking questions), please comment here or DM me. Overall, I hope you have a good rest of your day, and I look forward to hearing from you!

I am interested in fantasy settings, and so if you're a fan of swords and sorcery, adventure, mystery, political intrigue, high drama, or similar trappings, this might be the roleplay for you! (Think Lord of the Rings, DnD, generic fantasy setting, though worldbuilding can be done before starting) Also, if there's anything specific that you're interested in doing or any conceptual itches you're looking to scratch, please let me know, and chances are we can work something out!

Our stories can be about adventurers on a dangerous quest, nobles caught in a sudden upheaval, or monsters on the run from their own enemies. Inter-character romance is always a plus, too, as long as it is done believably and in an emotionally complex and impactful manner.

I value literacy and proper grammar/punctuation. Most important of all to me is dialogue. You might be able to give long paragraphs of description, but what matters most is what our characters are doing and saying.

[Loved trope] An organization is falling apart

Downfall: The Nazi regime is on its last legs by the Battle of Berlin, and officers are dragged into the command bunker as others dance, drink themselves to sleep, or kill themselves, all while the German military disintegrates and child soldiers die in the streets above.

The Big Short: The film ends as America‘s banking system collapses, the housing market spurring mass layoffs and organizational catastrophe, rendering the halls of power abandoned, messy tombs.

Apocalypse Now: The American army in Vietnam goes from an efficient, well-oiled machine at the movie’s start and ends up a chaotic, vicious, leaderless mess. The fighting at the Do-Lung Bridge exemplifies this, as soldiers toil away at a bridge every day, and suffer Viet Cong attacks ever night, and drugged out men shoot blindly into the woods while others flee for blind safety, appealing to anybody traveling by for help.

What is the perfect Halo Wars defensive build?

If you are playing Halo Wars 1 and you have had thirty uninterrupted minutes to build a defense of your side on Fort Deen, after which you would have to defend your side for a full hour, describe your perfect defense.

What is your chosen hero, what is your troop selection and layout, and how do you defend once an attack starts?

Why is Amtrak so expensive?

I’m a huge fan of train travel as a concept, and I know that this is probably a common gripe, but Amtrak is just crazy expensive given the extra time that it takes. I could fly from Miami to Chicago for $100 and be there in 3 hours, or take the train and have it take two days and cost more for a simple coach seat.

I was in Japan recently so I suppose I’m feeling spoiled, but it’s been years since I’ve taken Amtrak because each time that I consider it, I always find that flying or driving is far more convenient and often cheaper then taking the train. Why is Amtrak so darn expensive? For me, this is the biggest barrier to entry that stops me from using this for any trips.

I want a Halo Wars game without blobbing

(Inb4 "I just want any game at all in this Microsoft-forsaken series")

I love the Halo Wars series to death; it is so nice to have those great games. But if we ever get a Halo Wars 3, my dream is that the gameplay could be upended in a way that eliminates blobbing. For those who don't know, "blobbing" in strategy games is the tendency to gather up your troops into one big ball and throw them against your opponents, who most often have their own big ball of units running around. It's an RTS tradition, and many popular games (like Age of Empires, made by the same company that did Halo Wars), feature it prominently.

It's a commonly accepted feature of most RTSes, but it shouldn't have to be. There are a lot of standout RTS games like Ultimate General, Star Wars: Empire at War, Battlefleet Gothic, or Warno that heavily feature lines of sight, skirmishing, and mixed unit integration in ways that Halo Wars only scratches the surface of. It does require a slower pace than most RTS's offer, but it would also cut down on the tendancy to make ten scorpions, throw them against the Covenant/Banished, and then make 10 replacements once the former die. In my lore-addled brain, that's not what Halo combat is like, gosh darn it!

So, what do you guys think? Do you disagree, like reasonable people? Or do any of you crazed lunatics think that this would be a good idea?

I Love Bees appreciation post

I think I Love Bees is probably the best-written piece of Halo media. It doesn't have as cool setpieces as some books, and certainly doesn't have the great gameplay or cool cutscenes that the series is known for. But it has some really sharp dialogue, fantastic characters, and an awesome mix of funny, sad, and heartwarming, as well as a fascinating plot.

For those who don't know, I Love Bees is an audio drama ARG released in the lead-up to Halo 2 (think Hunt the Truth, but a bit more esoteric). It consists of two narratives. The main one follows several characters in the weeks before the Covenant invasion of Earth, and a background story details a really strange, symbolic story of a Sleeping Princess (a human ai), trying to rebuild a castle (her operating system) while trying to avoid being killed by a Spider (SPDR, an automatic reconstruction program), that has mistaken her for a Pious Flea (a Covenant trojan AI program).

The sub-story is really cool, but the main story really shines as the best depiction of civilian life during the Human-Covenant War. Some of my favorite highlights:

-- We hear the civilian reaction to the Fall of Reach. Midway through the story, the news is broken, and sends a shockwave through a crowd, and the rest of the story has every character prepare for what they know is now coming. It has a very somber edge to it that is done really well.

-- A realistic look at ONI's internal workings. One of the main characters is a midlevel ONI operative uncovering a hidden conspiracy within the agency, and the story highlights his drive to genuinely help people while being frustrated by the agency's malicious bureaucracy. But it doesn't treat ONI as omniscient or all-powerful like some later Halo works do, and it highlights the people in the organization who want to defend humanity.

-- Civilian life in general is handled very well. The characters are doing fine, but there are hints that things are getting tougher as more people crowd onto Earth, there is racism against off-worlders, most food is now synthetic due to shortages, and people are living with lost family members due to the war. It's a well-told picture that I've rarely seen in other Halo media.

Thanks for coming to my TED Talk, everyone. If you're interested in listening to the series yourself, the audio clips are compiled on the Halopedia page, starting with the first chapter here: Axon Clips Chapter 1 - Halopedia, the Halo wiki

Hope you guys enjoy it!
