Back in May 2026, a journalist at A Current Affair exercised their due diligence and reached out to Defence Media with a number of UAP related questions for the Minister for Defence, Richard Marles before airing their story on 1 June 2026.
Rather than address A Current Affair’s specific enquiries, the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister (ODPM) instructed Defence Media to respond with the standard tired old line of:
“Defence does not have a protocol for reporting or recording of Unidentified Aerial Phenomena (UAP) or Unidentified Flying Objects (UFO).”
Same old same old.

The frequently talked about 1971 Australian Joint Intelligence Organisation document on UFOs and antigravity has been referenced numerous times by David Grusch, Jesse Michels, Eric Weinstein, and even Karl Nell… but its full context remains untold.
Australian UFO researcher Bill Chalker extensively interviewed the document’s author, Harry Turner, before his passing. Ross Coulthart has also comprehensively covered Turner’s research in his book, In Plain Sight.

Following the airing of the ABC’s Australian Story episode on the Westall UFO mystery back in April, I submitted a FOIA request (and subsequent appeal) for Defence’s internal communications regarding the producer's request for comment.
The attached document shows exactly how the Australian Department of Defence, under Minister for Defence Richard Marles’ leadership handles legitimate media inquiries into historical events: by casually dismissing them with ridicule.
It’s incredibly disappointing and shameful that Defence chooses to perpetuate the stigma that has plagued the UAP conversation for decades. A slap in the face to all Westall witnesses.

In 2006, Australian UFO researcher Bill Chalker visited the site of the 1966 Westall flying saucer incident and interviewed several primary witnesses during the inaugural 40th-anniversary reunion.
