Best way to sew small square details/applique?

Best way to sew small square details/applique?

hi all! im trying to get back into sewing as it’s been a very long time, so I’m quite the beginner.

im making this shirt for a cosplay, and wondering what the best way to go about these small square details you can see here on the pocket, sleeve and collar.

when i look up how to do appliqués, the tutorials im seeing to sew the fabric to interfacing, flip it inside out, and sew it onto the larger project.

is that the best way to go about this? is it simpler to just fold in the edges of the squares and sew it on? In that case, I’m not sure what to do in the corners when I fold in the edges.

I am looking for sewing advice specifically, not suggestions to do things like fabric paint instead, please. I’m learning how to sew, which is the purpose of this project.

thank you!

Some help with a cosplay

hello! I used to sew quite a bit when I was younger, but it seems it’s all left my brain and I am trying to get back into it with a project. I’m going to take two thrifted shirts apart to make the shirt pictured. I couldn’t find a reference of the back, so the second photo is of another cosplayer‘s shirt (onestitchfromhell on Instagram).

my plan is to seam rip the collars off, cut the upper left (left when worn, right in the photo) half off of each shirt, and sew the blue shoulder into the white shirt. For the stripes I’m just going to cut strips from the blue shirt and sew them ontop of the white shirt.

then I’ll sew the white collar back on.

theres two parts I’m unsure about. first is cutting, as I’ve only got one shot at it. So when I cut the two shirts, I should mark where I want the color change/cuts to be, add some seam allowance. And I should be cutting the same size out of both shirts, correct? As long as I am adding seam allowance to both the blue and white, this should work I think?

im also unsure what to do when I’m sewing the corner on the black. The blue fabric will make sort of a square…and I can’t quite visualize what that’s going to look like when I’m sewing it. would I cut a slit in my seam allowance where the corner is? Will that leave a small hole at the corner?

oh, and because I’m sewing two different colors together, I want to use my white spool of thread ontop, and have blue on my bobbin, and make sure I have both pieces of fabric facing the respective way per color, correct? Or is it better to just use one color of thread?

not sure if I’m describing my questions right, i hope this makes sense. I appreciate any help.

also could not get physically get my cat to stop trying to sniff the shirt that’s been laying about all day the moment i decide to take a picture of it lol. Say hello to Merlin.

Is this possible to fix this?

hi everyone. this is the first time Ive used LEDs before, and I’m not sure why my fix isn’t working. the wiring on this led light from Evan designs got torn. I unconnected it, removed the broken parts and retwisted the intact wiring to the button/battery pack the same way I did when I put it together initially, but the light still won’t turn on :( very sad. the LED is glued inside of my prop in a way that I will not be able to replace the actual light if that is where the problem is. I’m hoping this is fixable 😞

first photo is the break, second photo is where I tried to fix it

Epic cosplay wigs for spiking?

wondering if anyone has any thoughts or suggestions. I usually order from arda, but its dubious if the next restock will be in before my con.

Ive ordered from epic cosplay before, but its been a while and I’ve never tried spiking a wig from their.

their Helios wig is listed for spiking but this is also back ordered!

has anyone tried spiking their wigs before? are they thick enough at the top?

the cosplays are for lg and cxs from link click, for reference.

was thinking of trying their Apollo and Aphrodite wigs for this.

Tips for making this shirt!

I am trying to get away from buying cosplay and start making things again. I haven’t sewn anything in years.

i was thinking of trying to frankenstein two shirts together to make this. I did find a video of someone talking about the process of doing the same thing, so that may help.

my concern is that I’d really prefer to thrift the materials.
would this project be significantly more difficult for a beginner if I’m not using two of the exact same shirt?

in the video I watched, she removed the collar from both shirts, cut them and attached the blue segment to the white shirt, then sewed the collar back on. Cut strips from the blue shirt to sew down as the lines on the bottom.

So I was thrifting for a mug for my qifrey cosplay…

going to a con in a few days in a casual qifrey cosplay me and my friends dubbed “gay dad qifrey.” thought it would be funny if I had like a #1 dad mug or something and I found this instead.

i want to use it so bad but it’s such a huge spoiler. but I feel like it was meant to be lol.

Best way to adhere this tiny led into this hole? The opening is Eva foam.

tried gorilla super glue and it did not work :( seems like too small of a thing to do with contact cement?

considering hot glue because I could kind of glob it into the hole? Worried because once it’s glued I will be putting a piece over it, so if it comes out it’s going to be very hard to fix once everything is put together

Good anime, low action, good M/M ship

kind of a weird request, but I thought I’d give it a shot.

looking for something new to watch. I’m open to actual BL suggestions, but I don’t tend to like heavy romantic plots. some examples of what I mean are like,

Link Click

Witch Hat Atelier

summer Hikaru Died

high drama, good plots, but with two boys with good chemistry. canon or not but I want that deep emotional bond.

im not a fan of shonen or anything high in action, but im willing to make the occasional exception. I do really like Trigun which has more action than I usually like.

Clear coat tips for Eva foam props

my friend and I are finishing up our props this weekend. we are painting with an airbrush.

i grabbed some cans of clear coat to add after painting, but im nervous about ruining the smooth look we get with the airbrush.

i tried looking up techniques for spray painting props, but im mostly just finding info about sanding and priming.

what can i do to ensure a smooth finish with my clear coat? do i use the same techniques I used for the plasti dip primer? ie, warm the can in water, spray starting outside of the prop to avoid large droplets.

I’m working on aerith‘s guard stick from ffvii rebirth. hoping to glue this detailed part tonight, but I’m really nervous! If anyone has any extra advice on how to do this well I’d appreciate it.

Ive patterned out my pieces that I have pictures here. there are holes cut out in the foam that need to line up right on the pipe as it’s all symmetrical. I taped the foam around my pipe and drew where the holds in the foam would be so I know where not to apply contact cement and how to line it up well, but I’m nervous about getting this right.

working on some armor I found it difficult to line my foam up perfectly with markings as it sticks so well. some parts would stick in the wrong spots while I was affixing another part an I couldn’t fix it as it already stick.

this is such a big sheet, I’m so worried about getting it all right! My plan is to use the markings as a guide, start along one edge and work down it while rolling the pipe. Or something like that.

if anyone has any advice on how to do this well, id really appreciate it.

I’m making a bracer of sorts (tifa from ffvii) for a friend.

primed yesterday with plastidip. decided to prime the under side of the armor as well as the foam i used was white, and didn’t want that to show while she moves her arm.

my question is, do I need to do anything else to the areas that will be in contact with her skin? the plasti dip is black, so I think the underside looks fine as is. will there be issues of peeling or discomfort where the armor makes contact with skin? Is there some kind of top coat I should add?

thank you, I appreciate any input.

I did some gluing today and it did not go well 😞pieces wouldn’t line up right, was at the mercy of the weather and I accidentally applied contact cement to the entire back of a piece where I was only supposed to add a little.

so my question is, do I try to sand these messy parts off? Just prime over it? I don’t think I have time to start the whole project over.

I appreciate everyone’s help in this sub. you guys have been great.

the pattern has these vs on the edges meant for alignment, but in tutorials people just seem to have lines. am I meant to mark the vs? I’m not sure I can make lines using that guide that will be perfectly aligned
