How do you actually balance your coursework with a 9-to-5?

I'm finding it so hard to get my portfolio work and assignments done on just my one study day a week. By the time I finish work on the other days, my brain is completely fried. Are you guys getting it all done during work hours, or are you having to sacrifice your weekends to keep up?

Nice to see Weezer and The Byrds finally getting recognised properly

The 2026 inductees were announced today, and seeing The Blue Album alongside “Turn! Turn! Turn!” genuinely feels like a 6 Music playlist. Honestly buzzing that Weezer finally got the nod though, The Blue Album still sounds ridiculously fresh for something that’s basically 30 years old now. Do people actually care about the Recording Registry stuff, or is it more just a nice bit of music trivia for radio shows and documentaries?

Cracked tile getting worse, what would you check first?

I’ve noticed this cracking on one of my kitchen tiles and I’m a bit paranoid. Does this look like an impact crack from dropping something heavy, or more likely movement underneath? The house is older, so I’m slightly worried about the floor shifting underneath. Has anyone dealt with something similar without having to rip the whole floor up?

Is it just me, or has the post-interview silence gotten even longer lately?

I had an interview a few weeks ago and it’s been complete radio silence since. I know Civil Service recruitment moves at the speed of a tectonic plate, but I’ve noticed quite a few people on here saying they’re waiting ages even for reserve list updates now. Is there some wider recruitment slowdown happening at the moment, or is this just the usual bottleneck?

A "Walking Library" in the 1930s, bringing literature door-to-door in Ramsgate.

This archival photo from the mid-1930s captures a fascinating part of British social history. At a time when many critics argued that the UK lagged behind in library access, enterprising individuals created “Walking Libraries.” For a fee of just two pence, residents could borrow a book for a week, with the “librarian” carrying a portable collection on her back to reach people who couldn’t easily visit a central library branch.

Anyone else’s Friday commute in East London about to be a mess?

Just saw TfL confirm that the Stagecoach strike at Bow Garage is definitely going ahead this Friday. The 8, 25 and 205 are the buses I use the most, so Friday is probably going to be stressful.TfL says the 25 should run a near-normal service, but I’m not exactly confident about that. Anyone planning alternative routes already, or just hoping for the best?

Had a lovely afternoon wandering around Chester last weekend.

I finally got around to doing the full loop of the Walls and managed to get this shot of the Eastgate Clock. Even when it’s busy, the city still looks great. Does anyone have a favourite spot for a coffee near the clock? I feel like I always end up at the same places.

Any Chester brunch deals still on after race week tomorrow?

I saw a few places doing brunch and drinks deals for the May Festival this week. Now that the main racing is wrapping up today with the Chester Cup, does anyone know if any independent spots are keeping their deals going for the Saturday? Or is it usually back to the normal menu everywhere as soon as the races finish?

I’ve got some old vinyl floor tiles in my kitchen that could potentially contain asbestos. I’m only looking to replace a small 2sqm section that’s already loose. Apart from the obvious “don’t sand it”, are there any specific UK-approved bags or disposal methods people would recommend for a small DIY job like this? Or is it generally considered better to use a licensed contractor even for a tiny area?

It’s crazy to see the Rows looking exactly the same while the street level is so different with all the old trucks and cars. Does anyone remember when Bridge Street in Chester actually looked like this, or have any stories about the shops in the photo?

Hi everyone, I’ve heard people say they got an apprenticeship because they were good at communication or customer service, even without much technical experience. Has that happened to anyone here? Might be helpful for people who feel like they don’t have much experience on their CV.

Was grabbing a coffee in Storyhouse and noticed the Lit Fest lineup, Lenny Henry and Maggie O’Farrell both look like great picks. Feels like there’s quite a bit going on in Chester this May. I usually end up at the open mic stuff, but thinking of actually booking a talk this time. Anyone else planning to go to any sessions?

I came across this photo of a tram heading towards the station. I love seeing the old architecture looking just as impressive over a hundred years ago. It’s a lot busier with tourists now, but the vibe hasn't changed that much.Does anyone know if there are still any old tram tracks hidden under the cobbles anywhere in the city centre?

Now that the new energy price cap is in effect (as of April 1st), I’m trying to get a realistic idea of what a one-bedroom flat actually costs to run. The average numbers I see online never seem to match reality once you factor in the daily standing charges. For those who just moved or got their first April rate bill, what are you actually paying for a 1-bed flat? Are you sticking with the variable rate for now, or are there any good fixed deals worth looking at?

Things feel a bit grim right now, but trying to find some positives. If we do go down, at least the away days might feel a bit more “proper” again compared to the Prem. Some of those grounds and atmospheres are a lot more real, even if the football isn’t always great 😅 Any away days people are actually looking forward to if it happens?

I’ve just been quoted £1,500 to have a standard single garage roof removed (the old cement sheets). I know it’s technically non-licensed work, but honestly, I’d much rather a pro handled it than me messing about with double-bagging and disposal myself. Given how much waste costs have jumped recently, does this feel like the going rate for 2026 or am I being overcharged? I'd appreciate any insight from people who’ve had similar work done lately.

Moved here recently and I expected the rain, but not how damp it feels indoors. Feels like I’m constantly dealing with condensation and running a dehumidifier, and the electricity bill is definitely adding up. If you’ve come from a warmer place, how do you handle the heating vs cost side of things? Also any advice for keeping damp under control in older flats?
