Rainy Memorial Day at the beaches (teenager edition)

We have a house in Dagsboro and will be there over Memorial Day weekend. This is the first year our teenage daughter can drive and she is so excited for some beach days with her friends. Of course, the forecast looks awful, cold and rainy. Hopefully the forecast changes but there’s a chance all the fun beach days will be a wash out. Any recommendations for things for a group of teens to do over a rainy weekend?

Rainy Memorial Day weekend with teenagers

We have a house in southern DE and will be there over Memorial Day weekend. This is the first year our teenage daughter can drive and she is so excited to spend time in OC with her friends. Of course, the forecast looks awful, cold and rainy. Hopefully the forecast changes but there’s a chance all the fun beach days will be a wash out. Any recommendations for things for a group of teens to do over a rainy weekend? She’s been mentioning club H20, it looks sketchy to me but I have no idea. Is it safe?

Cascais Portugal

I’m in the early phases of planning a family trip next summer. We’re two middle-aged couples and two teenagers. We are from the US and travel to Europe often, for this trip we’re looking for a relaxed beach-y trip that still offers some architecture/history, great food, some adventure for the teens and reasonable prices. Cascais was recommended by a few travel guides but it seems to be focused on a day trip from Lisbon. I was wondering if there was enough to do if we spent a week in Cascais as a sort of a home base, with potentially day trips to Lisbon, Sintra, Obidos, wine tours, etc.

I wanted to see if people thought if a week in Cascais would be worthwhile of if we would grow bored quickly. Also would love and recommendations while we are there, particularly for any nice resort style hotels or beautiful rental properties for us to stay in.

If not Cascais, would also appreciate recommendations for similar destinations that fit our criteria.

Hosting an “Open House” style party at an event space

My daughter would like to have a graduation party, which primarily will consist of 50-60 of her friends. In our area, open house style parties are common given many graduating seniors have multiple parties to attend in just a few short weekends. Most parties are done is someone’s house or backyard to accommodate this.

Here’s my challenge. Our house is not big enough to host a large party (plus we have pets and other considerations that make a big party impossible). We usually host parties offsite, typically at local restaurants because it’s very easy. We have in the past hosted at parks and pavilions and get it catered. But usually it’s a smaller scale, people are staying the whole party, and we “do it up” with good food, party favors, decor, music.

The challenge is that for these events I have no idea the actual number of people that will show up. And of those people, i do not know how long they will stay or if they will even eat. So it makes hosting at a restaurant or using a caterer very difficult. And if we rent an event space, I’m not certain of what size to even get (I’d hate to over estimate guests and have a big empty cavernous room we’re decorating). I’m just stumped about how this can all work.

I’d love any and all advice and suggestions.

My (50F) husband and I have been talking about getting a boat for years and finally decided to do it this year. We have a vacation home in coastal Delaware (near the Indian River Bay) and plan to get a slip and dock the boat there.

Since we’re nearing retirement, we’re looking for a safe sturdy boat for relaxed afternoons on the creek and bay. We have a teenage daughter who is also looking for a little pep, for things like tubing.

Our biggest constraint is conditions. The water near our slip is quite shallow and there are a lot of sandbars that seem to pop up. We’re looking for a boat that is suited to those conditions but can also handle a bit of chop as we head deeper into the bay.

We are both new to boating, and need something that’s low maintenance, simple and reliable.

Right now we’re looking at pontoons and tritoons, outboard motor. We also want to make sure there’s enough horsepower for tubing. Of course these are not cheap boats and our budget is not unlimited so I want to be thoughtful about what our true needs are.

Any advice if we’re looking in the right direction, if you’d recommend tritoon vs pontoon, any other boats we should consider or specific features we need to get?

We’re looking in the gently used market now (less than 10 years, low hours). Any specific brands to look for (avoid) or other advice will be appreciated.

My daughter will be celebrating her high school graduation and she really wants a party. We are a “party” family so normally host big events but I’m stumped for logistics and would love some ideas.

Our home is not set up for a lot of guests. It’s too small, we have pets, it’s not an option When we do host parties, we usually use a restaurant or event space. But she wants a huge party. And we have no extended family, so this will just be her school friends (many I don’t even know). She’s suggesting an Air BB or similar (so kids can sleep over) but I’m certain that Air BB hosts will not allow a teenage party. Plus layer in worries about alcohol, etc. I just don’t see this being realistic at all.

I’ve offered a restaurant party with her close friends, an overnight weekend for her close friends at our vacation house (too far away), renting a park Pavillion (too lame) and nothing is working.

Any advice or suggestions on how I can plan something that works with our constraints?
