Rejected from all universities for a MSW, should I start by a BSW?

Im 37 and a single mom of 2 neurodivergent kiddos, so there’s a lot of appointments, advocacy and burnout in my life. I’d need a somewhat flexible career, some WFH would be ideal. I have a bachelor or Sociology from a Venezuelan university have been living in Canada for 14y but only 5 of those have been working for a non-profit and would be counted as experience.

I need to keep working during my schooling and I fully understand how competitive the programs at Windsor and WLU are, but I’m feeling really bummed about not being accepted, Im at the cap of my income at 60k and I feel very stuck where I am today, I’m not sure how much growth I could have with just my sociology degree in this area.

My dream is to become a Social Worker and now I’m kicking myself for choosing sociology over SW for my bachelors. Would it be easier for me to apply for a BSW and then a MSW? Maybe even start with a SSW? I would like to avoid a huge amount of debt and so many years of schooling, but I don’t know what to do.

Or should I maybe pick another masters? I’d love to work with marginalized groups, my experience so far is working with vulnerable seniors and I loved it. I could also see myself working for a school board or a hospital, not necessarily counselling or private practice. Sorry about the novel, I’m feeling very down today and holding back tears at work.

Any success stories?

We all know the heartbreaking stories of loving an alcoholic, but are there any success stories here? My Q moved back with his mom after his rock bottom earlier in the year, has been sober for a couple of months, and is currently in therapy.

I’m not holding much hope for recovery and I know that’s still extremely early, but it’d be so nice if he ever did the work to get better, he was truly my best friend aside from being my boyfriend, and even if we don’t get back in a relationship ever again, I’ll be happy just to get my friend back.

It’ll be so easy to get back together…

My Q and I broke up last September, he was an alcoholic and had a habit of using cocaine and cheating with prostitutes through our 4y relationship, I only found out in the last 6 months of it.

As most of our Qs, he was a wonderful thoughtful human being when he was sober, he’d help me with chores, was more of a father to my kids than their bio father, and I’d say he was genuinely my best friend.

After we broke up we stayed in contact until early February when I decided to go no-contact, I’ve been healing ever since but being a single mom with 0 support network it’s so heavy at times.

My Q came back with a letter last week, telling me all about how much he missed me, how we was fired from his job May 1st and how we spent all of May and April drunk, high on cocaine and deep into a prostitute, how he spent all his savings and is now moving back with his mom after his “rock bottom” to get back on his feet and become a better man and the man we (the kids and I) deserve, telling me how he misses our day to day and the kids calling him dad and how we wants us back so badly so he can help me and we can share the load.

After having a particularly rough month, it’ll be so easy to get back together, to tell him yes, come back home so I can finally get a break and some help with the kids, around the house… it’s so hard to keep boundaries when the struggle is so real.

2018 Nissan Rogue mystery noise in the back wheel on driver’s side.

My Rogue has had a noise in the back wheel of the driver’s side for months, I’ve taken it to the mechanic a few times and, after they check everything, they tell me the brakes are good for another 20k, the last tome they adjusted a little plate behind the wheel and that solved the issue for a couple of weeks.

Sunday I was driving home on the highway and I had the loudest high pitch noise I’ve ever heard coming from a car, took it to get it checked and the mechanic couldn’t reproduce the noise, today was fine, noises are not constant and can’t be reproduced, my mechanic is starting to think that I’m crazy, I just want him to change the brakes just for the sake of it.

How can I prove to my mechanic that the noise actually exists and is not in my imagination? Also, what could be causing it?

Thank you! 😊

When should I stop being my ex’s secretary?

My ex and I separated almost 6 years ago, since then he was never involved with the kids and I’ve been doing all the parenting on my own. I usually send him a text message with important stuff and remind him (multiple times) of things happening in the kids’ lives, just for him to show up only a 10% of the time and that’s being generous.

Kids are older now, oldest is graduating next week and he hasn’t reached out once to ask me what day / time is the graduation, if we’re going to do anything to celebrate, if there’s anything we need, nothing!

By now I’d have usually sent him a little reminder with the time, date and plans before and after the ceremony, not this year though, I haven’t sent anything yet, and I’m wondering if I should do my usual reminder or let him miss the graduation? Tbf he gets the exact same emails from school that I do, so he has access to the information if he decided to care one day, and kiddo graduating would prefer if he was not there.

Program I work for sunsetting in July, what are my options?

As the title says, we were officially informed yesterday that the program I currently work for will be sunsetting on July. GD told us we’d have individual meetings with them to figure out our “exit package” according to each of our circumstances, I’ve been working there for about 4.5y.

I’ve been applying for every job I can find for the past couple of weeks and plan to continue to do so, a position opened yesterday at my current company for a 1y contract, I applied for it and already have an interview date, I’ve never done a contract before so this is where my multiple questions come from;

  1. I’m assuming the answer is no, but I thought I’d ask either way, can I negotiate to still have my “exit package” even if I’m chosen for the contract position?

  2. Will I still get access to my current PTO and benefits during the contract position?

  3. Next year when I might be in the same situation, will I also be offered an “exit package” when the contract ends?

  4. What should my questions / negotiations points be? If any.

I’m a single mom in my late 30s going back to school for a part-time, online masters in January. Thank you!

Program funding most likely not being renewed.

We had a meeting today where my boss informed us that the funding for our program will most likely not be renewed come fall time, they are currently in the negotiation stage of it, but the outcome looks very grim. I absolutely love what I do and my clients, but I’m a single mom so I need some financial stability in my household.

So I guess my question is, should I start looking for another job? Even though it’d break my heart to leave my current position. Or should I ride it out and see what the final outcome is? If the funding doesn’t get renewed and I’m left without a job in the fall, will I be entitled to severance or some sort of compensation? I’ve been here for 4.5 years and we are a team of less than 50 I’d say.

Just got a 5K quote for my teenager’s orthodontic treatment, same price if we go with braces or Invisalign. Doctor said her treatment is not complicated and should be 12 months - 15 months with Invisalign and 15 months - 18 months with braces. We can do a payment plan with 1k upfront and the rest divided monthly during the treatment period.

Is this reasonable? Or can I find it cheaper somewhere else? Insurance covers nothing and I’m a single mom paying everything out of pocket.
