Federal Lawsuit: 8 Survivors Sue Maine DOC + 57 Staff for Decades of Physical, Sexual & Psychological Abuse at Long Creek Youth Facility (Trigger Warning!)

I am issuing a strong trigger warning and sending my deepest sympathies to the survivors. It’s hard to know this level of abuse was (allegedly🙄) happening right down the road from my own program (“school”) while I was enrolled there in the late 90’s. I’m SOOOO proud of these survivors for seeking justice 💙⚖️

I posted about this new development the other day with the wrong link to the lawsuit - so…here is the correct link to the complaint: https://www.scribd.com/document/1040549410/DOE-1-et-al-v-MAINE-DEPARTMENT-OF-CORRECTIONS-et-al

Lawmakers say head of youth detention center must go, citing ‘extreme failure of leadership’

“Lawmakers investigating recent abuse allegations at New Hampshire’s only state-run youth detention center are calling for the “immediate” replacement of its director, one in a list of sweeping recommendations released Tuesday.

The legislative committee began investigating operations inside the Sununu Youth Services Center in March, after the state Office of the Child Advocate reported the use of illegal restraints against children and a lockdown that spanned four to six weeks. The Disability Rights Center in New Hampshire has made similar allegations.”

Former Robert Land Academy teacher to be sentenced for sex crimes involving minors (John Ahlstedt) — Trigger Warning

From article:

“A former teacher at a controversial private military-style school in Wellandport who pleaded guilty to sex-related charges involving children will learn his fate in June.
John Ahlstedt appeared in the Ontario Court of Justice in St. Catharines on Friday for a sentencing hearing on four charges, including child luring and possession of child pornography.

The Crown is seeking a custodial sentence of six to seven years.

“The only conclusion you can draw is the facts of this case demand a significant penitentiary sentence,” assistant Crown attorney Nicholas Hegedus told the judge.
Ahlstedt, a 40-year-old West Lincoln resident, was employed as a physical education teacher at Robert Land Academy at the time of the offences.

He coached the varsity teams at the all-boys school and in 2023 received the Ontario Coaching Excellence Award by the Coaches Association of Ontario.

Robert Land Academy, which closed in 2025, is currently the focus of an investigation by Peel Regional Police into allegations of child abuse.

It also faces dozens of civil lawsuits alleging decades of physical and/or sexual abuse of students.

“I’m sorry to all my students,” Ahlstedt told Judge Janet Booy Friday.

“Many people don’t like Robert Land Academy, but it was the best time for these kids and I will fully vouch for that 100 per cent.

“All I wanted to do was help kids in life, to get them to university, to reach their full potential. My best way was doing that was through sports. I’m very proud of what I’ve done and what I’ve accomplished in life.”

Racine County, staff sued in ‘brutal beating’ of teen (Trigger Warning)

From article:

Racine County and two juvenile detention center staff members in Caledonia, Wisconsin have been sued for allegedly using excessive force on a teen. In a statement, the county says it has made changes since the incident.

The teen’s mother, Kianna Reed, brought the lawsuit against the county and Robert and Jordan Knight, described in the suit as former and current security coordinators. The facility, the Jonathan Delagrave Youth Development and Care Center, opened less than a month before the incident.

The lawsuit alleges that on May 27, 2025, the teen, who suffers from emotional and psychological disabilities, became emotionally dysregulated and the Knights egged him on and physically attacked him with excessive force that violated his Eighth Amendment rights.

In December, the state public defender’s office released video footage of part of the incident, which appeared to show four staff members directing the then-15-year-old to move from a spot by a wall in a hallway, possibly to a nearby room, and the teen not moving, the Examiner reported.

After a staff member took a swing at the teen, the situation devolved into a struggle. The teen was struck repeatedly by staff before and after he was on the ground.
