Mental engagement/enrichment for my cat?

I’ve had my cat for about 1.5 years now. His behaviors have changed a lot. He’s 7 years old but came from a hoarding/cruelty case so I don’t assume he’s had a typical upbringing.

He used to be easily overstimulated by petting or any type of prolonged movement, he also used to incessantly beg. This made sense because he was severely underweight and lived in a cage. So after a few months, he had gained weight, and I think he knew food would be regular now. Slowly he went from a little pig who would inhale anything in his vicinity to being picky and turning his nose up at food/treats he didn’t like.

He’s also become much more used to pets. He’s always been friendly but initially just about any touch would get him rippling his back.

He also used to be much more playful and easier to engage in play. It seems like nothing holds his interest now. He’ll have these periods where he’ll stalk around, sniffing things, seeming bored or wanting to find something to do. I have so many toys for him, that I rotate to keep interest. He has wands, balls, ball tracks, remote control mice, laser pointer, wobbles, kickers etc. When he gets in these moods I’ll try a wand, I’ll try the laser pointer, I’ll toss a crinkle ball etc. But he ignores all my attempts. How do I engage him?

Just is anyone else completely mystified by dogs’ sense of smell?

I have a pitbull/German shepherd mix dog and more than any other dog I’ve lived with I am amazed at her sense of smell. So it might just be the gummies, but, how cool is it that some/most of us know when our family is coming home minutes ahead of time?!

So my partner and I work different days of the week. When I’m home I know when he’ll walk through the door because my dog will get up and move to the door and wait for him. This happens most days about 8 minutes before he’s actually in the door. He says she does the same for me. We’ve estimated it’s probably 5 miles away?! And our hours aren’t the same day to day so it’s not like she’s predicting the timing.

She also led me from the yard, down the sidewalk, into the woods to a coyote den one time. Some walks I designate as sniff walks, meaning I’ll follow her wherever her nose wants to go, within public property. Well one time she led me from a block away to a coyote den with brand new pups! Obviously I immediately left once I knew it because I wasn’t trying to stress out mom.

But idk I guess I just can’t even imagine what it would be like to smell like my dog, but I really want to lol

If I completely take down my aquarium, how much of my bacteria would be preserved in just the filter?

I’ve had a 5 gallon aquarium running for about 2.5 years. It had a betta I had found abandoned in it. He has recently passed and I want to get another betta. However it currently has gravel and silk plants.

The first year I had the betta in the tank I tried to do a planted tank. I thought I set myself up for success because I picked the “easiest” plants, Java fern and Anubias, but I followed the directions on the package and planted them in the sand. I panicked once all the plants died and switched to gravel and silk plants. I still kept my botanicals and driftwood when I redid the bettas tank. Well now I know what I did wrong in burying the roots, and I have another tank where my plants are doing well.

Basically I want to try a planted tank again in the betta tank. So if I completely take it down and only plan to keep using my filter, heater, and a floating betta log, how much of my bacteria culture will I lose? I’m hesitant to do it because it’s been solid for so long now. I test it weekly since it was cycled. It went through a mini cycle the first time I redid it, but honestly it wasn’t even that bad. This time I wouldn’t really be keeping any tank decor or wood or anything.

I’ll include an old picture of my late betta, but to be clear there is no fish in the tank currently.

Please enjoy this photo dump of my pit mix girl who got her name because of her smiles ☺️

Her name is Miley. I adopted her from the shelter as a puppy and just called her “smiley” for a while because I couldn’t think of a name and everything made her smile. Eventually I just shortened it to Miley and it stuck 💁‍♀️ (last pic was taken at her doggy daycare lol)

Driftwood biofilm and gravel vac question

Hi, I just started this tank 3 months ago. It’s been cycled for the past 1 month I’d say. My numbers have been 0,0,5 for several weeks now. I’m adding 1 endler per week to protect my cycle. I’m testing my water every other day at this point. If after a week it’s still stable, I’ll add another endler. I’m doing an all male tank. I have 3 in the tank so far.

I have a couple questions. I have one piece of driftwood that has had a layer of biofilm consistently for about maybe 6 weeks now. The other piece looks fine. I’ve read this isn’t dangerous and is just what happens in new tanks, and usually resolves within a few months. Is this true? I do notice the endlers enjoy pecking at it.

My other question is I do have a siphon/gravel vac that I use for water changes. I end up successfully getting about 50% of the debris from the bottom every time I use it. How do I pick more up? I don’t have a cleaning crew yet (although the endlers do pick at the plants and the wood). I’ve tried swirling above the sand, it just doesn’t seem like the suction is strong enough? Is there a better product for this?

Basically, it just looks unsightly to me. I have the fluval water testing kit. I’ve been testing every other day and my ammonia is 0, nitrite is 0, nitrate is 5. I know some biofilm is good and a food source but while the water is clear, I just feel like it looks little “dirty” despite the water testing being good and my fish are eating well/active/colored up etc.

How to source snails in my area?

I’ve wanted land snails for quite a while. I’ve kept aquatic snails in my fish tanks before and loved them. I’ve done mystery snails and nerites.

I’m located in the US in Minnesota. Specifically the metro area. If anyone knows how to source any land snails legally here I would much appreciate it. For example, any shops locally, or anywhere to ship them in state? Or tips on collecting outside? I’ve never had luck in the past just casually looking.

I rent an apartment and I have 1 large dog and 1 cat. My apartment complex does have dog waste stations with doggy bags, but these are small and my dog is big so I would have to use two bags to pick up her poops. Instead what I do is get plastic bags when I shop and reuse those to clean up after her.

I then got a cat a year ago and use plastic shopping bags to throw out his litter in the dumpster. I try to be environmentally conscious but I feel my system now is cost effective and I can’t think of any other way I could do it. Does anyone who lives in an apartment do it a different way? Is there a way I could dispose of my cat and dog waste that wouldn’t involve a plastic bag?

I rent and am only allowed tanks up to 10 gallons. Previously I have only kept bettas. I have a newly cycled 10 gallon tank with 2 endlers currently. I’m adding 2 more per week to make sure my cycle doesn’t crash. My plan is to eventually have 6 male endlers and 4 amano shrimp for the tank. Is there any single centerpiece type fish I can have it this setup?

My game has been pretty glitchy since it updated but this one is my favorite 🫠 all my pets have been getting that holiday bubble. Weird because one, it’s a dog…. and two, I can’t even play as a dog or cat so how can I celebrate the holiday for them in the first place?! 🤦‍♀️

About my dog/medical history

- 7.5 year old spayed female, 55 pounds, super mutt but mostly pitbull/german shepherd

- adopted from a shelter as a puppy, mom was a stray that was living in the woods with her puppies

- current on all vaccinations (bordatella, dapp, lepto, rabies)

- has a history of seizures and exercise induced collapse but is not on any regular medication

- has a history of “sensitive stomach”, was on vet prescribed hydrolized protein food diet for several years, didn’t notice an improvement any way on this diet

Current issue:

My dog has gone through periods her whole life where she will vomit and get diarrhea intermittently for no discernible reason. She was on a hydrolized protein diet but still had these periods of sickness on that diet. She’s been on a limited ingredient diet and still and these periods of sickness.

She was boarded at her doggy daycare for 6 nights about a month ago now and came back incredibly sick. For the first two weeks back had frequent, horrible smelling diarrhea (completely liquid) and was vomiting yellow foam. The vet did a fecal and found nothing. Checked for parasites, tapeworms, and giardia. Suggested feeding boiled plain chicken and white rice. I’ve been doing this for two weeks and she’s had days of solid poop followed by days with diarrhea. Still vomiting yellow foam. Went back to the vet a week ago and they gave me some probiotics (pro-pectalin). She’s had more regular poops with this but still random diarrhea and still vomiting yellow foam. Vomiting averagely once a day, and having averagely 3 bowel movements per day now (1 diarrhea 2 solid).

Do I go back to the vet? What do I ask them to do if so? Thanks for any guidance.
