If returning is the rep, why do I keep trying to stay?

They tell me the rep is losing and returning attention. Attention drifts, you notice, you return. That's the unit. That's what counts.

So what is the staying for?

If returning is the rep, then returning is the point. More returns, more reps. A mind that stayed on the breath would earn nothing.

I return well. I do not stay well. Half a breath, sometimes less, before I am gone. Three full breaths in a row is a rare animal. I see it maybe once a sitting, if that.

Some days it isn't even a departure. It's a flicker: breath-thought-breath-thought. So fast it stops feeling like taking turns. It feels like both at once. The exhale and the other thing, side by side, sharing the same second.

It's disorienting and makes me angry at myself, which is its own kind of noise.

So how do you train the staying. Not the noticing. Not the return. The staying itself. Is it a separate muscle, or does it just show up, uninvited, after enough reps of return.

My inner dialog 6 minutes into meditation

... Oh man I've been daydreaming again. Back to breath. Here comes another inhale. Yeah feel that coolness of the air. This time I'll concentrate real well on it. Yeah the rough, cool air again my nostril. I'm focusing so well. Wait I'm thinking about meditation, that's not breath focus. I need to focus on the breath. Back to breath. Ok yeah here comes the peak of the inhale and Im all out of toothpaste. I need to buy more toothpaste. I should put that on the shopping list. Try and remember to put that on the shopping list after I'm done with this. Here comes the exhale. I think I can feel some warm air. Maybe. It's kind of subtle. It's a lot easier when my nose is stuffy, I can focus on the sound. Can't really feel the warm air so well. Back to the exhale yeah. Feel it. Feel that exhale as best I can. This is taking a long time. Did I forget to set the alarm? Man I'm really distracted. I should make a post on reddit about what my inner dialog is saying. That would be fun and the replies would give me a nice dopamine hit that will keep hitting for hours. Dang missed the end of that exhale back to the inhale alright. Inhale time baby, I can do this. I'm so good at inhales. Ah, the old recognizable, cool air. It's so easy I can focus so well. This is going to help me so much, be more present, be more focused at work. Yeah, work, I could get so much more done if I could only focus. Man at the end of the day there I could barely focus. Maybe I should try a standing desk. When I get back tomorrow I should... [two minute tangent thinking about what I need to do at work tomorrow] Oh, shit! I've been way off. Back to breath, back to breath. Yeah inhale feel the coolness...

PSA: Listen to the live recordings of Silver Mt Zion shows

The live show recordings are an absolute treasure trove of extended and unreleased songs (RIP War Radio). And, in wild contrast to GYBE, the band talks with the audience. ALOT. Like to the point where an audience member will sometimes yell "PLAY A SONG". It's mostly Efrim talking. And he's pretty damn funny. So yeah if you haven't listened to them, I recommend doing so!

How many breaths can you focus on before getting distracted?

I'm on day 8 of 10mins a day practice. I feel like my average is 1 breath in and out before my mind jumps to something else. Occasionally two and rarely three.

What is the cause of these specks of white on the scan? Manufacturing defect on HP5?

Dark dots appearing on the negative (near top 1/3 of frame)

  • Appeared on the whole reel although some frames its barely noticeable.
  • Probably not a bubble because bubbles would show up light on the neg?
  • Using fresh DDX developer/ ilfotec fixer
  • Agitating and tap once per minute.
  • Live in an area with soft water + using wetting agent
  • Doesn't appear on unexposed film
  • Actually, looking at my previous reel, the artifact appears there as well (they were developed separately)
  • I did accidentally overdevelop this reel and the previous by about 30% (using K400 development times, oops!)
  • Was not having this issue on the roll of K400 film I was previously using
  • Both reels were using different cassettes but the same camera.

This is happening on a 100ft roll I of HP5 I just purchased. The fact that it's happening on a brand new roll, but wasn't happening on my previous stock makes me think it's a manufacturing defect. Has anyone else seen this sort of thing and have experience with it?

Can someone explain to me whats going on in that last bar of the Goldberg aria?

I'm not a musician but have a vague understanding of music theory. I'm trying to understand why it feels the way it does to me. It sounds like the song should end after the first G. But then there is the rest of the bar and it feels like the song doesnt totally resolve to me even though it still ends on the tonic. It sounds mysterious like there's more to be said.

Early large land mod? Was it TR?

I seem to remember a child downloading an early version of TR. I'm not exactly sure when this was but I was playing Morrowind a lot around 2004, so I'm guessing around then or earlier.

I remeber it was a huge area south west of vvardenfell. And it was mostly empty space, little foliage, doors opening to bare walls that sort of thing. I wandered around a bit and was disappointed with the lack of content.

What was this? Was this early TR or a different mod?

Albums that sound like post rock but aren't post rock

Koln concert has large dynamics, repetitive vamping, cathartic releases and slow harmonic building. Sounds a lot like post rock in a solo jazz piano way

Sometimes I want to tell people "you have lovely shoulders" or "nice squats, those look difficult" or "Turkish getups nice I want to do those some day". One time someone complimented my squat number and I said thanks and walked away because I'm afraid of socializing. Have you ever complimented someone at the gym? How has it gone?
