My (43M) gf (39F) saves ALL the negativity for me. Is it a dealbreaker?

We moved in together in January and two weeks later my father died. My only child was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes in April. My ex is a severe alcoholic who was arrested twice this year while on probation for DUI and at this point prison seems likely. This is obviously a lot for anyone to take, but my gf’s primary concern seems to be not getting enough one on one time with me.

Thing is, she smiles and says all the right things to everyone else. When my newly widowed mother came to stay for a week, she laid it on with the “so happy to have you,” “glad we’ve gotten to know each other” shmaltz, but behind closed doors she was ticked that we wouldn’t have any one on one time. My kid and I do summer community theatre. I’m a performer and a volunteer so it admittedly takes up a lot of time. My gf pitched in and helped a lot too. To the other volunteers, it’s ”I love how welcoming this community is,” “this is such a special place.” Behind closed doors, I get “I need a break from theatre.” “can we find some non-theatre stuff to do.” Like I get that, but I’m the one getting all the negativity while everyone else gets the perfect person who says and does all the right things.

Sometimes when I have to be closer to kiddo because the blood sugar is high or low, or plans change for whatever reason, she gets so upset she closes herself off and sobs like you’d think someone died. It’s too much. She mutters under her breath and wears a martyr’s scowl if a cup is left out, and my kid asks me what she did wrong now and why my gf is mad again. Then the doorbell rings, company arrives, and it’s “hiiii so good to see you!” Hug hug hug etc

I feel like I’m the sponge and she has a monopoly on feeling sad or angry. When I express myself if something is bothering me, she turns it back into something that’s bothering her. I’ve pointed all this out several times and it doesn’t change. She’s already in therapy, but I remain the emotional doormat. Honestly it’s keeping me from moving the relationship forward because deep down I know it’s not going to get better. Do I ask her to move out? Do I cut bait? She’s gotten so intertwined in my life I get anxious about having no to explain to all my friends and acquaintances why i broke up with such a great person and trying to do it without badmouthing her or making myself sound unreasonable. Thoughts?

New Belmont another ploy to price out regular fans?

Read that the new Belmont Park will have a capacity of 50,000 on Stakes Day. that’s down from 90,000+ it used to hold. Used to be you walked in, and it only cost about $20 GA in Stakes Day. now I’m guessing it’ll be another thing where it’s all ticketed online in advance and tickets will all be well north of $100. Why sweat your ass off for that when no one even runs for the Triple Crown anymore? So it’ll just be the rich, the famous, and the people tied to the sponsors. What a damn shame.

Saw it Tonight

And oh wow, what an unbelievable experience. From the power of the opening notes, to the musical heights of I Dreamed a Dream and Stars, the crowd pleasers like Master of the House, the pin drop you could hear after Empty Chairs….just everything was perfect and amazing. A night I’ll never forget.

Does water/being wet make anyone else go super low??

I’ve noticed with my daughter that nothing makes her drop like water. I’m not talking about drinking, but things like swimming, slip n slide, sprinkler, even being caught out in the rain (not so much after showering though). And it doesn’t just lower her BG, I mean it DROPS, usually into the low-very low range. I’m wondering if this has something to do with hydration, but wanted to see if this happens to anyone else?

Hadestown Pro Shot - Shoot I See It?

So I’ve never seen Hadestown on Broadway, but it’s one I‘d like to see. Should I go see the pro shot movie, or will take away from the live experience? like should I go in cold and see it live on stage before anything else? To be clear I’m not concerned about spoilers or anything, just whether seeing it on film before stage will detract from the experience of seeing it live on stage.

Atrocity (2014)

Somewhat uneven, in both good and bad ways. The first 20-30 minutes of the movie are Project X gone wrong, and that’s all you think it’s going to be. Drunk frat bros making bad decisions, and you’re going to be along for the ride via the cameraman. But then, suddenly, the movie takes a hard right turn and becomes a part-mockumentary, part-police procedural about what exactly happened as we piece together all the bits of footage that either didn’t fit or that we didn’t see the first time.

I have to say, I really liked this sudden change as I’m a huge Mockumentary fan and wasn’t expecting it to pop up here. Having the detective fill in the blanks and put the puzzle together for us was the best part of the movie.

Here‘s what didn’t work, and an extra spoiler warning as follows: There’s a bit of mystery over the last person to walk into the room before the bloodshed starts and a question to why that person’s body isn’t later found at the scene. It led me to think there was a supernatural element to the story coming up to add to my police investigation, ala Strange Harvest, but alas, that turns out not to be the case. There’s a twist at the end that I knew was coming. I honestly thought it was a budget thing where actors were playing two roles but it just turned out to be a rip off of Shutter Island. The final final twist makes zero sense. It was just stupid and seemed tacked on.

Overall, Atrocity was an up and down roller coaster ride that was sometimes exhilarating, sometimes head scratching. The first third is pretty paint-by-numbers. The second act is the best, most interesting part. The third act just doesn’t stick the landing and ends up a “huh? That’s dumb” moment. Should you watch it? If you’re a genre fan, I’d say yes, just don’t expect to be blown away. It’s not too long and it has its moments. I just feel like another fleshed out script or two and they could’ve had so much more.

Life of Belle

Is it me, or does knowing the family in this is an actual family kinda wholesome? Like they made a found footage movie with murder and dead bodies together and it’s kinda sweet lol. Core memories, amirite?

That said, this was a really good FF flick! The first scene gives away (most) of the ending, but it’s still a ride getting there. Mom and daughter gave especially good performances. Low budget (which I generally like as it adds to the realness) but what they saved the fx coffers for was well worth it (and creepy as hell). Also doesn’t overstay its welcome with a 75ish minute runtime.

This is definitely a slow burn, and there are two kinds of those: the ones that sprinkle in some scares and jumps along the way, and the ones that are just a long slow descent to the big climactic payoff. This is definitely the latter, but man the descent itself is a trip, and the payoff is chilling. Definitely worth a look! ⭐️⭐️⭐️1/2 (out of 4).

Finally watched Noroi: The Curse

I'm sorry guys, but it was just ok. Maybe I was tired, but it just didn’t hit for me. I couldn’t stand the crazy psychic guy, he was just too manic I wanted him to go away. ”That scene“ everyone talks about. Ok, it was creepy? The ending was fairly anti-climactic. But the biggest no-no for me: for the scary scenes, especially towards the end, the added background music. Takes me right out of it every time. There‘s no ”real footage” with an ominous underscore.

The story was good, but your standard demon fare. The other performances were fine. It did a good job world building, tying the peripheral characters into the ”curse,” and keeping things moving. Overall, I liked it! But I’ve heard over and over that this is top tier genre fare. Maybe I built it up too much as a result, but it wasn’t anything special. ⭐️⭐️⭐️/4

i will tender my FF fan resignation is the council sees fit….

Musical Remakes

Just musing to myself, if I was thinking how with movies they are constantly remaking or rebooting the same source material over and over with varying results. However, this seems to almost never happen in musical theatre. Sometimes you get a play adapted into a musical, but has a musical ever been “redone?”

Take The Addams Family, for example. Popular, well known IP, but the musical isn’t great. Common complaints include it’s not true to the characters, weak plot, mediocre songs, etc. If someone came along with the perfect Addams Family musical, true to the characters, amazing score/book, etc, is that just too bad because a middle of the road musical already exists? What’s different about the rights to making a musical vs making a movie? Has there ever been a “remake” or an altern version of the same story/source? Maybe Phantom and Phantom of the Opera, but they were more or less created concurrently.

Can’t Remember the Title

Hoping for some help tracking down a movie I saw a few years back. The movie involved some kind of interdimensional/alien/paranormal tie in. four or five friends are walking through the woods looking for or stumbling on this secret base. As they get closer it starts effecting them, like getting dizzy, nauseous, sick, etc. It has some tie in to the Montauk Project, but I’m fairly certain it’s not “Evidence” or ”Incident at Montauk.”

Any help is always appreciated!

(Super) Low Budget FF Recommendations

I know there’s a lot “low budget“ (and often low quality) found footage out there, but I’m looking for the really simple, bare bones fare like Leaving DC or Dybbuk Box. The former is such a hidden gem, and I know the second most people consider mid but I was pleasantly surprised due to low expectations. A simple setting, a tiny cast, a building tension, and a few good scares. Any recommendations for movies like these are most appreciated! Thanks in advance!

Mockumentary Style OR Sci-Fi FF Movies

I ask this every so often, but can anyone recommend some good ff movies filmed in the mockum style? I’ve seen a lot of them: Lake Mungo, Savageland, Howard’s Mill, HITHH, Lunopolis, Strange Harvest, The Bay. This is my favorite style, and I’m always seeking out some hidden gems.

Also love FF that isn’t the usual haunted house/asylum/forest, possession, Satanic cult. Any interesting or Sci-fi premises like LOLA or Lunopolis to check out?

Thanks in advance!!

This is My Dragon, Missy

First time poster, 3 1/2 year Tortie Dad. If any watches any of the Game of Thrones shows, there’s the lore that a dragon bonds to one person, and every else gets the fire breathing monster. This is my cat lol. She loves me, jumps in my lap, lets me pet her, curls up in bed, purrs and make squinty eyes at me. Around anyone else she’s skittish, hissy, bitey…full on tortitude x10. I secretly love being her only person and am the ultimate Missy apologist 😂. Anyone else’s Tortie experience like this?
