My (43M) gf (39F) saves ALL the negativity for me. Is it a dealbreaker?
We moved in together in January and two weeks later my father died. My only child was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes in April. My ex is a severe alcoholic who was arrested twice this year while on probation for DUI and at this point prison seems likely. This is obviously a lot for anyone to take, but my gf’s primary concern seems to be not getting enough one on one time with me.
Thing is, she smiles and says all the right things to everyone else. When my newly widowed mother came to stay for a week, she laid it on with the “so happy to have you,” “glad we’ve gotten to know each other” shmaltz, but behind closed doors she was ticked that we wouldn’t have any one on one time. My kid and I do summer community theatre. I’m a performer and a volunteer so it admittedly takes up a lot of time. My gf pitched in and helped a lot too. To the other volunteers, it’s ”I love how welcoming this community is,” “this is such a special place.” Behind closed doors, I get “I need a break from theatre.” “can we find some non-theatre stuff to do.” Like I get that, but I’m the one getting all the negativity while everyone else gets the perfect person who says and does all the right things.
Sometimes when I have to be closer to kiddo because the blood sugar is high or low, or plans change for whatever reason, she gets so upset she closes herself off and sobs like you’d think someone died. It’s too much. She mutters under her breath and wears a martyr’s scowl if a cup is left out, and my kid asks me what she did wrong now and why my gf is mad again. Then the doorbell rings, company arrives, and it’s “hiiii so good to see you!” Hug hug hug etc
I feel like I’m the sponge and she has a monopoly on feeling sad or angry. When I express myself if something is bothering me, she turns it back into something that’s bothering her. I’ve pointed all this out several times and it doesn’t change. She’s already in therapy, but I remain the emotional doormat. Honestly it’s keeping me from moving the relationship forward because deep down I know it’s not going to get better. Do I ask her to move out? Do I cut bait? She’s gotten so intertwined in my life I get anxious about having no to explain to all my friends and acquaintances why i broke up with such a great person and trying to do it without badmouthing her or making myself sound unreasonable. Thoughts?
