Does anyone have a theory as to what's behind the recent rise in school violence and shootings in the Philippines?

There's been two school shootings in the past two months. The latter being livestreamed by the mass shooter. There have also been other incidents I've seen including a mass stabbing.

I have a young kid with my partner and we're considering whether to put her to school here, or in the UK. Honestly, these recent events have made me reconsider whether putting her to school here (even in a private school) is a good idea.

What do you think would have been the career trajectories of River Phoenix and Brandon Lee if they hadn't died prematurely?

They were two of the most famous up-and-coming stars of the 1990s

Both died tragically, but if they had lived what do you think would have been the respective career trajectories of both?

What happened to Pizzahut in the Philippines?

I was musing about this the other day when ordering my Dominoes.

Back in the day (10 years ago) Pizzahut in the Philippines was the flagship place to get pizza - like everywhere else. Big, well-established, American chain. Restaurants were packed and everyone wanted to eat their.

Honestly, the last few years it's like they've fallen into an eternal void. Their almost non-existent on the mobile apps like Grab. Very few brick and mortar stores anymore. The ones they do have look tired and old with very few customers.

I know it kind of mirrors a decline globally but what on earth happened to them?

If every post-WWII British Prime Minister was placed in the Coliseum in a circle at an equidistant space and fought to the death, who would emerge victorious?

I'm taking a battle royale of every British Prime Minister since 1945 in the Coliseum. If you were a punter who would your money be on to emerge victorious?

Theoretically, what is stopping Rubislaw Quarry being turned into a giant outdoor swimming pool or reservoir?

With Aberdeen having such a massive seagull problem, why don't people eat them? Are seagulls actually edible, has anyone ever seriously considered them as a food source?

It seems logical - we eat chicken, turkey, duck, goose, wood pigeon, pheasant, grouse, etc..

With Aberdeen having so many seagulls why don't we eat them? Are they actually edible or is there some reason they can't be eaten?

For those who grew up and lived in Aberdeen in the 90s/00s. Why do you think the 'Bouley Basher' culture disappeared?

Anyone who grew up or lived in Aberdeen in the 90s and 00s will remember the 'Bouley Bashers'

It was a huge sub-culture around the time with young people hanging out in modified/souped-up cars at the beach or cruising down Union Street and the city centre.

It almost feels like it disappered over night. Why do you think it disappeared?

Are there any players in Scotland with hidden talents or who have achieved notable careers outside of football?

I was down the YouTube rabbit hole and found out Glenn Hoddle and Chris Waddle actually had a Top 12 hit and were on TOTP! Pains me to say he actually had a decent voice - the tune is a bit of a banger - angsty 80s synth-pop.

It got me thinking are there players (or managers) in Scotland with hidden talents or careers outside of football.

I know Scott Arfield is a decent singer and musician who'se written songs, been in a band and actually said he would rather have been a musician than a footballer! Are there others?

What do you think about the two new proposed stadiums for Aberdeen and Dundee? Do you think they'll get built and what other projects would you like to see?

Aberdeen are proposing a 'New Pittodrie' to be built at the Beach - 20,000-seater stadium. Discussions are ongoing

Dundee's new stadium 'Camperdown' will replace Den's Park and be a 12,500-seater stadium. Plans have been submitted to the council.

What do you think about these two new developements. Are there any other stadiums or major projects you would like to see with Scottish clubs?

Does anyone have a theory as to why Stirling doesn't have a major football club?

Something I've always wondered.

Stirling is comparable in size to Perth, Inverness and Kilmarnock (albeit a bit smaller). But it is larger than Falkirk and Motherwell. Centrally located right in the heart of Scotland. It's almost 95k in the wider council area within a reasonable drive.

Yet, the only team they have to speak of is Stirling Albion - a very small League Two team with a tiny stadium.

It feels like they should have a decent sized team - probably Championship with maybe a few Premier League seasons. Does anyone have a theory as to why Stirling doesn't have a major football club?

How do we improve the product of Scottish Football?

Someone posted a piece earlier today about the initiatives in the MLB and it got me thinking. This is what I would like to see in the Scottish game to improve the product and what is stopping the S.F.A from doing it?

1. Lose the preoccuption with trying to be a 'mini' England - identical league names shows the mindset of those in charge. It's not a fair comparison and we don't need to copy them.

2. Drop the minnows - 42 teams in 4 divisions - for a Country of barely 5 million people. It's too many. Most don't survive on a commercial basis and are staffed by volunteers. I would have a top division of 16 teams and a second tier of 12 teams. The rest drop into a pyramid of part-time regional leagues or merge.

3. Get a sensible fixture list - I would have as many games start at 3pm on a Saturday as possible. I don't want anymore games of Falkirk 'entertaining' St. Mirren at 8pm on a Tuesday night.

4. Slash prices across the board - food, drink, tickets and merch - The product is not value for money. £28 for an adult ticket and £10 for children. That's  £76 for a family of 4 - before buying a match programme, food and drink!

The SPFL just rest on their laurels because it's 'the national sport' - this isn't the 1920s, we live in a time of abundant content where you can watch movies, games, socials - no entertainment has a god-given right to exist, you need to convince people it's worth spending their money on. Flat rate of prices on everything and improve the experience - music, fan zones, kid's footballs, autograph sessions, food trucks the lot.

5. Trial Alcohol - let's see if people can be sensible about it.

6. Introduce Summer Football - We don't have the weather. Fans don't need to freeze on a cold dark February. It will mean better weather, better pitches, better quality football, less money spent on heating and floodlighting and better preparation for European Football.

7. Better socials and engagement - It needs to be a spectacle - I'm not saying cheerleaders and half time shows - but better highlight packages, engagement online. Right now you've got people like Open Goal, PLZ, The Warm-Up all doing their own thing. Bring them into the fold and start promoting our league.

7. Get the TV deals nailed down - The Scottish Government are all about 'standing up for Scotland' - then do it, hold the BBC's feet to the fire. We get under 5% of BBC football rights despite having 10% of the population. Every match should be streamed. There are loads of streaming services in Asia in India, China, South-East Asia that don't get Premier League rights we could be selling to. Centralize all the commercial rights with the SPFL

8. Youth Development - We need a national coaching academy. Partner with a University. We need to modernize tactics and raise standards, technical ability, bringing through players and facilities to do it. England did it with St. Georges and we can have something similar. Mandatory minutes for Scottish under-21 players.

Are the S.F.A going to do any of this? Nah, what's for lunch?

If you were suddenly transported back to 1500s Reformation Scotland with the knowledge you have today but no possessions, what would be your plan to survive?

Being Scottish you already have a passing familiarity with the time period

But if you suddenly got transported back to 1500s Reformation Scotland during the reign of King James with the knowledge you have today, but no modern possessions, what would you do to survive?

What kind of skills do you have or what would be your plan to make it in society?

How likely do you think it was that Kent Carpenter was the victim of a targeted assassination?

I've noticed that on Filipino sub reddits and other social media, local Filipinos seem to think that his death was some kind of targeted assassination perpetrated by China.

For background, Kent Carpenter was a 73-year old American marine biologist and academic who was gunned down in his home in Negros earlier this week.

His work included marine conservation - he was also an expert witness at the 2016 UNCLOS arbitration between China and the Philippines which the PH won.

Does anyone have any thoughts?

What if the Backstreet Boys performed the pop song 'As Long As You Love Me' at the court of Henry VIII in Tudor England. Do you think they would enjoy the performance? Why or why not?

For those that have knowledge of Tudor England.

If the Backstreet Boys, being a fairly modern pop band, were sent back in time and performed the pop song 'As Long As You Love Me' for Henry VIII what do you think he and his court would make of it?

Do you think they would enjoy modern pop music? Would they understand the lyrics or be impressed?

If they followed up with the YMCA do you think they would join in? It's a funny, whimsical thought.

Which movie villain do you actually think had a good point?

Is there any movie you've watched where you actually sympathized and thought the villain had a point?

I'm going with Roy Batty in Blade Runner - he basically believes artificial beings capably of thought deserve dignity and shouldn't be treated like property. Sure he's violent but plenty of 'freedom fighters' throughout history have been.

Watching football with Americans! Does anyone have sensible answers to these questions?

I was watching one of the QF with a couple of American friends.

It's weird when they ask questions about football that seem both stupid, naive and enlightened all at the same time. Like pointing our observations and thinking, I never thought of that. Here are a few -

1. Why doesn't every player form a wall along the goal line at corners? You know, put your players along the goal line with the goalkeeper forming a wall across the goal when a corner is taken instead of marking players?

2. Why don't players form a circle or closed guard formation around the ball carrier to protect the ball? When a player is running with the ball, have a loose guard of players in a circle around him to stop the opposition tackling him.

3. Why not put the entire defence on the halfway line when the opposition are in their half? You have like an extreme offside trap.

4. Why not have a rolling screen when a free kick is taken? Like you have runners in all directions in the NFL causing chaos, or players rushing the defence like a screen in basketball.

5. Why not involve the goalkeeper outfield player in overloads? You know have him run at certain moments and players pass to him every few touches creating an overload.

Does anyone actually have any sensible answers as to whether these are in the rules and what would actually happen if they were used?

Crimes Against Foreigners in the Philippines

Hi Guys!

I'm posting this in response to the story about the American who was shot in Rizal on Friday. I noticed there was quite a few people (rightly) concerned about it.

I'm not saying I'm any kind of expert, but I am a foreigner and I have lived in the Philippines for over 12 years. I've always kept my finger on the pulse with cases involving foreigners and have done a bit of informal investigative research over the years.

You won't find much statistical evidence, most is ancedotal and what you read in the newspapers. The numbers appear quite high, but the interesting thing is the 'commonality' involving cases. It's not true of every case but most have the same features -

  1. The are almost always killed by people they are acquainted with - wife/girlfriend, jealous boyfriend of the wife/girlfriend, boyfriend of the maid, some relative, ex-employee, etc.
  2. They are almost always killed in their residence - this guy was outside his front door (which is an outlier) but the vast majority happen inside their house, apartment or hotel. Not as you might think, in a bar or on the street.
  3. The motive is usually personal or financial - relationship issues, money, inheritance, revenge, unpaid debts, business disagreements or land disputes always feature heavily.
  4. Long-term residents are overrepresented - Most victims are people who have been here for years. They've developed local relationship and routines.
  5. Firearms are the predominant weapons - I would guesstimate 70-85% of cases.

I always give the same advice:

- Keep a low profile

- Be very selective with friends, partners or staff - this is where your big vulnerability will be

- Don't advertise wealth

- Don't make enemies

- Don't involve yourself with dodgy dealings, characters or anything illegal

- Be careful about investing in businesses

- Keep a cool head - if you're neurotic or hot-headed the PH probably isn't the best place for you.

Is there an accepted theory or explanation for the Rendlesham Forest incident?

The Rendlesham Forest incident happened in December 1980 near the twin U.S. Air Force bases at RAF Woodbridge and RAF Bentwaters in Suffolk, England. U.S. military personnel reported seeing unusual lights in the forest, with some claiming to have encountered a metallic, triangular object. The incident became one of the world's most famous UFO cases.

Has there ever been an accepted theory, consensus or explanation for the incident and what happened there?
