Ballet Behind Bars
During my 20+ years of incarceration, I was privileged to meet Kristine Thompson. As a staff member (non-uniform), she interacted with us daily, with no judgment. She learned of my dance background and we approached the Warden to start a class. That's when Ballet Behind Bars was born.
We took women who had never danced and taught them the art of ballet. We were able to wear actual leotards, tutus, and ballet slippers. We put on performances that our family members and the inmate population was able to attend. It was a blessing to have such a positive program in such an oppressive environment.
I was released almost 2 years ago. I just learned my beloved ballet teacher is battling a cancer diagnosis. I was able to visit her recently. Still a blessing to k own and be loved by such a beautiful soul, who never judged. And shared her love for dance and for so many women who learned from her.
